In 1962, influenced by American R&B and skiffle music, Townshend and Entwistle started a Dixieland jazz band called The Confederates. Townshend played banjo and Entwistle played the French horn, which he had learned to play in his school band. This song was inspired from one of the songs of the folk Bhojpuri album Balma Bada Bavaali sung by Rani Bala. However, reports suggest that the Bhojpuri song itself was plagiarized from a song from a Pakistani movie titled Mr. CharlieThe song was also referred to in many political situations, to varying effects. In Nepal in June 2011, the song was used as a political campaign song in October 2010, the Chief Minister of Gujara Narendra Modi played a pun on the song to criticize his opposition party, the Indian National Congress.
