Confession and Absolution

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all

unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in

thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You

with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and

eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and

lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a

called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of

the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Service of the Word

Kyrie LSB 152

P In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to

the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

C Lord, have mercy.

P Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis LSB 154

Salutation and Collect of the Day

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, give us an increase of faith, hope, and love, that, receiving what You have

promised, we may love what You have commanded; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and

reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 7:6–9

“You are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured

possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than

any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is

because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out

with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know

therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love

him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 8:28–39

We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his

purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he

might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he

called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son

but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge

against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that,

who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the

love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is

written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;

we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor

life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else

in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse LSB 156

C Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel Matthew 13:44–52

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the thirteenth chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in

his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value,

went and sold all that he had and bought it.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. When it

was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. So it will be at

the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery

furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe

who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new

and what is old.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed – 5pm & 8am only

C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Confirmation – 10:30am only (5pm & 8am Services continue on page 7)

The pastor addresses the catechumens.

P Beloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ said to His apostles: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven

and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you

always, even to the end of the age.” You have been baptized and catechized in the Christian faith according to

our Lord’s bidding. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men, I will also confess before My Father who is

in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Lift up your

hearts, therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.

P Do you this day in the presence of God and of this congregation acknowledge the gifts that God gave you in your

Baptism?

R Yes, I do.

P Do you renounce the devil?

R Yes, I renounce him.

P Do you renounce all his works?

R Yes, I renounce them.

P Do you renounce all his ways?

R Yes, I renounce them.

P Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?

R Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord?

R Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin

Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day

He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Page 7: Trinity Lutheran Church · 2020. 7. 26. · Trinity Lutheran Church “Connecting our Community with Christ” by being disciples who are “All In”… Church Office 520 N Garfield

6

P Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

R Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

P Do you hold all the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures to be the inspired Word of God?

R I do.

P Do you confess the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, drawn from the Scriptures, as you have learned

to know it from the Small Catechism, to be faithful and true?

R I do.

P Do you intend to hear the Word of God and receive the Lord’s Supper faithfully?

R I do, by the grace of God.

P Do you intend to live according to the Word of God, and in faith, word, and deed to remain true to God, Father,

Son, and Holy Spirit, even to death?

R I do, by the grace of God.

P Do you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and Church and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall

away from it?

R I do, by the grace of God.

P We rejoice with thankful hearts that you have been baptized and have received the teaching of the Lord. You

have confessed the faith and been absolved of your sins. As you continue to hear the Lord’s Word and receive

His blessed Sacrament, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus

Christ.

C Amen.

The catechumens kneel to receive the confirmation blessing. The pastor places his hands on the head of each catechumen and makes

the sign of the cross on the forehead while saying:

P [Name], the almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of

the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life T everlasting.

R Amen.

After all the catechumens have received the blessing, one or both of the following collects are prayed.

P Let us pray.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in bringing these Your sons and

daughters to the knowledge of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and enabling them both with the heart to

believe and with the mouth to confess His saving name. Grant that, bringing forth the fruits of faith, they may

continue steadfast and victorious to the day when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the

crown of righteousness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy

Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

P Almighty and most merciful Father, in the waters of Holy Baptism You have united Your children in the

suffering and death of Your Son Jesus Christ, cleansing them by His blood. Renew in them the gift of Your Holy

Spirit, that they may live in daily contrition and repentance with a faith that ever clings to their Savior. Deliver

them from the power of Satan and preserve them from false and dangerous doctrines, that they may remain

faithful in hearing Christ’s Word and receiving His body and blood. By the Lord’s Supper strengthen them to

believe that no one can make satisfaction for sin but Christ alone. Enable them to find joy and comfort only in

Him, learning from this Sacrament to love You and their neighbor and to bear the cross with patience and joy

until the day of the resurrection of their bodies to life immortal; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

P Peace T be with you.

C Amen.

Service of the Sacrament

Preface LSB 160

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

The Words of Our Lord

P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke

it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in

remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying:

“Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of

sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

Lord’s Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Agnus Dei LSB 163

C Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

Celebration of the Lord's Supper

If you are a member of an LCMS congregation we invite you to join us this today for Holy Communion. Lutherans believe that the

celebration of Lord’s Supper is the eating and drinking of the body and blood of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin and

strengthening of faith. We also believe Holy Communion is a sign of oneness of faith, life, and worship. We ask that if you have

not communed with us before, and would like to receive Communion please visit with one of the elders on duty or one of the

Pastors so that we may be of help to you concerning your participation in this Holy Supper. Anyone is welcome to come forward

to receive a blessing. Simply indicate your desire by crossing your arms over your chest.

Building Healthy Families: How many hours per day do you spend on social media? How many watching TV? Playing

golf? Shopping? Working without end? Although these activities in themselves are not bad, hobbies, habits and jobs can

take a great amount of time, replacing other important things if we let them. As Psalms 90:12 instructs, “So teach us to

number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” May we wisely live out our days on earth, spending time with our
