TRANSFIGURATION LUTHERAN CHURCH 11000 FRANCE AVENUE SOUTH, BLOOMINGTON, MN 55431
TLCMN.COM
s we enter these last two months of the year, I am mindful of the upcoming Thanks-
giving Holiday and reasons I have to be thankful. There are plenty.
Even in the midst of what feels like the most unstable time in the world I can recall, with divisive politics, world disasters, and impending conflicts, I can still quickly come up with
so many reasons to be grateful and confident.
The first thing that comes to mind is my family. With my daughter’s wedding fresh in my mind I am still glowing with the joy of what a gift friends, family and loved ones are. When it all boils down the founda-
tion of this joy is God’s love which is so abundant.
Next, I think of this church and the 60th anniversary we celebrate this month. I give thanks for the Saints who have gone before us in faith and handed it to us and for our parents and grandparents who under-stood the value of community and faith and trust in God. They believed in it so much they gave large por-tions of their money and effort to build this magnificent church. Because of them and with our ongoing sup-
port we stand here week in and week out on this corner of France and 110th, proclaiming God’s love.
This church makes so many things happen it fills my heart with wonder and joy. Shelley Smith continues to raise awareness so powerfully with her productions about the many injustices in our world. In partnership with TLC and other congregations, Philip Nushann has begun his work in Liberia to save and bless orphans! TLC is taking a lead role in bringing together faith communities of every kind in Bloomington to talk about
difficult matters through “Respectful Conversations.”
Then there are the thousands who come here and are blessed year round through our amazing musicians
and worship services—now streamed live for those who can’t be here.
We continue to support our local ELCA Spanish/English mission start - Tapestry, VEAP, Meals on Wheels, Feed My Starving Children, Oasis for Youth, Lutheran World Relief, Global Health Ministries, Lutheran So-cial Service, the ELC, Exodus Lending, Sheridan Story and the good work of the Minneapolis Area Synod.
There are way too many other things to list here.
Mostly, I am thankful for the Gospel, which Martin Luther rescued from captivity 500 years ago this year. For his bold and selfless proclamation that we are saved by grace through faith - faith which is a pure gift from God. So many times in human society God’s word gets corrupted and presented in ways that make grace less clear and less certain. We ELCA Lutherans have the privilege of continuing Luther’s legacy in reminding the world over and over again—it’s all GRACE, it’s all GRACE, it’s all GRACE. Grace is a great
promise in a troubled world…and we are called to be stewards of it!
Give thanks!
Grace and peace to you,
A

Activities are full-on at this time of the year.
Students are back into studies and extra-
curricular activities, with parents scrambling to
get them here and there, while also participat-
ing in their own activities and commitments.
Whether you come to Worship on Sunday
mornings or Wednesday evenings, it is a time
for families to come together to focus on faith
and what God calls us to do. It is also a
perfect time to volunteer. Consider volunteer-
ing as a family to usher at your preferred wor-
ship time, greet worshipers as they arrive or
serve communion. I can’t stress enough that you
are needed and appreciated no matter how
often you can volunteer, be it weekly, monthly
or only occasionally. Consider asking an usher
or a pastor if there is a need when you arrive
for worship. Many times, that can be a prayer
answered! There are some additional times for
families to serve together, such as our 60th
Anniversary Celebration. Please watch for
information in the bulletin and consider it an
opportunity for your family to gather together,
grow in faith and go forth to serve.
Blessings,
Michelle

Holiday Gift Giving Remember that the ELC is selling SCRIP gift cards that make wonderful Christmas gifts (co-workers, teachers, coaches, hairdressers, people who you don’t know what to give them). SCRIP cards are also very helpful in purchasing food needed for your Thanksgiving dinner. We are selling SCRIP cards through the church on Sundays from mid-November through mid-December. Another way to access scrip is on-
line. If you want more information about this, please call the ELC (952-884-7955) and we can walk you through this. We also have SCRIP cards on hand, you can call to see if we have what you need and then stop by to pick it up. Thank you for your support. Employment Opportunities TLC-ELC is still looking for a full time and/or part time teacher. We are also looking for a couple of hard working and fun high schoolers to join our team. Please call Karen Wenge at 952-884-7955. The Holidays and Children It is sad to hear people say that they are just hoping to get through this blessed time of year. It’s the per-fect time to help our children, and ourselves, learn about what it means to be loved, generous, kind, and loving.
Food, Children and Holiday get togethers
Model the behavior you want from your children
Give them choices (what vegetables do they want: carrots, broccoli or asparagus)
Have them help in the kitchen so they begin to understand the work that goes into preparing these meals
Take a walk with everyone after big family dinners, enjoy the fresh air, neighborhood lights and one another’s company
Minimize Stress
Plan ahead (i.e. don’t plan a middle of the afternoon meal when that is when your child usually naps)
Let your children know what is going to be happening – prepare them
Be realistic, if your child rarely sits at the table more than 15 minutes, why would you expect them to sit longer at an extended family meal?
Develop a caring heart
Talk to your children about people outside of the family to whom you can take this time to say thank you to, come up with a specific idea – a note, a gift, a card, etc.
Commit your family to find an organization to support with time, action or money (homelessness, animal welfare, Christmas Shoeboxes, etc)
Don’t give too many gifts, and have them remember to say thank you (Ideas taken from Amy Joyce – editor for On Parenting.)

The general operating financial data for September is summarized be-
low and it shows an increase in receipts with a decrease in disbursements
when compared to the month of August. There is a lag of over $70K in
comparing 2017 YTD data with 2016 data. This is due to decreased receipts, increased expenses and
from the results of the special appeal in January of 2016.
As we review the data it demonstrates the importance of ongoing stewardship of the congregation. With
75% of the year completed, the YTD receipts are only 62% of the budgeted receipts for the year. If you
find that your pledge is not up to date, please prayerfully consider makings a contribution to satisfy your
pledges.

Now on the heels of celebrating
the 500th Reformation, I hope you
found new inspiration
about your faith journey
by hearing and singing
several new hymns of Martin Luther this
past month. His incredible determination and per-
sistence brought the scriptures and the Gospel mes-
sage to all people, including us! I am very proud of
our congregation for your willingness to try out new
hymns and new ideas for worship. Getting great
ideas from my colleagues and friends inspires my
worship life, and I pray it does yours as well.
We turn our attention to celebrating TLC’s 60th
Anniversary on November 5, when the music will
again lift your spirits and bring you great joy! The
Choir will sing several all-time favorites, includ-
ing “One Faith, One Hope, One Lord” and the cho-
ral setting of Pachelbel’s Canon. We will also hear
from the TLC Brass Choir, TLC Handbells, and the
Praise and Worship Team.
It seems strange to think
of Advent before we get
to the Reformation, but do
note the special services
in December on previous page: more wonderful
music and hymns are coming your way!

SMALL GROUP RE-IGNITE
Wednesday evening worship during Advent
will be centered around the theme “The
World is About to Turn.”
Dec. 6—Beginning at the end: suffering and
hope (Mark 13:24-37)
Dec. 13—Our baptismal calling
(Isaiah 40:1-11; Mark 1:1-8)
Dec. 20—“Movers and shakers”
(John 1:6-8, 19-28)
November is the time of the year for saying “Thank You.” As we
count our blessings we know the greatest blessing we have—far
above any other—is this gift of faith given by grace from Jesus
Christ. You are forgiven, you are loved, and you will live
forever. Can there be anything better than that?
Everything we do as a congregation is focused around sharing
this Gospel truth—with our children, our youth, our adults, our
neighbors, our community—the whole world.
We say “thank you” best to God when we share what we’ve been freely given. Your giving and support
of TLC makes that sharing happen here. Thank you for your generosity in sharing the Gospel!
This year for our Celebrate Giving campaign, we gratefully ask that you consider doing two things:
Please continue your support of TLC by picking up, filling out, and returning an estimate of giving card by
November 19. Over the coming three Sundays and Wednesdays, a card with your name on it, will, be at
a table in the Narthex. Please stop by and pick yours up.
Prayerfully consider increasing your gift by 5 percent over your 2017 gift. If all our faithful families
commit to an annual 5 percent increase each year over the next five years, along with our capital
campaign efforts, we will solve our chronic operating budget shortfalls and be a vital and effective con-
gregation for future generations.
In Christ,

November December
On one Monday each month, Transfiguration vol-unteers gather and car pool to Global Health min-istries in Fridley. During our time there we sort, pack, inventory and evaluate medical supplies that have been donated from all parts of Minnesota and surrounding states. These supplies are eventu-ally shipped to clinics and hospitals throughout the
world that urgently need supplies.
A forty foot container recently arrived in Zimbabwe and two other containers are now en route to South Sudan for the new Lutheran Community Center and clinic in Juba. Soon anoth-er container will leave for Liberia in partnership
with the Lutheran Church in Liberia.
If you would like to become involved in this important international ministry, come and join us. We have lots of fun. We are there from 10:00-2:00pm. (bring a bag lunch). A medical back-
ground is not necessary.
Your help touches the lives of people in develop-ing countries and brings them toward better health
and greater productivity.

Taking your Faith Home
Dear Friends in Christ,
In the midst of a seemingly never-ending stream of catastrophic news, it is important to
hang onto signs of hope. One of the most hopeful stories for me these days is the good
news coming out of Liberia.
One year ago, TLC member and Liberian citizen, Philip Nushann returned to his home
country to start “Center for Changing Lives – Liberia.” A faith-based, social service or-
ganization focused on bringing hope to children in rural Liberia who were orphaned by Ebola or AIDS.
On October 12, 2017, Transfiguration, in partnership with a small but growing coalition of churches here in
the Twin Cities, co-hosted the second annual fundraiser for “Center for Changing Lives – Liberia (CCLL).”
While Philip wasn’t able to be here for the event, he Skyped in for the entire evening and we all had a
chance to see him and talk with him. It was a joyful reunion!
Philip and his team shared with us the work that has been taking place. In January of 2017, through the
intervention of CCLL, 25 children enrolled in school. This fall, that number increased to 40. CCLL has estab-
lished a staff of four, all of whom are currently volunteering their time. The organization is incorporated in
Liberia and has established office space in Gbarnga, the largest town in central Liberia.
It is an incredible blessing that we at Transfiguration have the opportunity to participate in this good work.
Our spirits were lifted during the evening by Agnes, Philip’s wife who shared her gift of singing with us. For
the first time it was a child-friendly event, and the children joined together in West African song and dance.
The Liberian food was delicious.
Many thanks to all of you who
attended, those who continue
to support the people of Libe-
ria financially, and those who
are praying for Philip, his
team, and all the children.
Seeds are being planted now,
that I believe will be bearing
fruit for generations, both in
Bloomington and in Liberia.
Thanks be to God!

November is National Alzheimer's Disease Month. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia in older people. This disease affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. There is no cure at this time but medications can be prescribed that slow the progression of the disease. Alzheimer's usually begins slowly with symp-toms of mild forgetfulness and difficulty remembering recent events, activities, or names of familiar people or things. As the diseases progresses people may have difficulty performing simple tasks, or have problems with language, for example forgetting words or using the wrong words when speaking. The person may also lose track of time or become disoriented, sometimes getting lost in their own neighborhood. In the later stages of Alzheimer's it is common for people to forget how to do self care tasks such as feeding themselves. Some people experience mood changes such as agitation, crying or anger. The course of the illness is different for everyone and some may have the disease for five years when others have it for twenty years. For more information contact the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org If you or some-one you know could use help, please contact one of the Pastors.
