1. GENERAL
IMPORTANT
This document contains important pre-installation information. Certain
requirements or conditions inAppendix B: Total Access 3000/3050 Pre-
Installation Considerationsand Installation Overviewsections must be
satisfied for a successful retrofit installation. The entire document should
be reviewed as part of installation planning.
This practice is an installation and maintenance guide for the ADTRAN Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit
Kit. The Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit is designed to fit into a minimum of available space in acertain number of existing outdoor enclosures and cabinets.
The Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit is composed of customized wiring and cabling for equipment
(sold separately) that occupies 16 inches of vertical space in a 23-inch rack. The required configuration
mounts the Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf, the Total Access 3000 chassis mounted directly above it, and
the fan module directly above the Total Access 3000 chassis. For proper fan module air flow and heat
dissipation there cannot be space between the units. The Temporary Mounting Shelf requires an additional
four inches of rack space during the installation.
2. INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
After unpacking the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit inspect it for damage or missing components. If
damage or missing components are noted, file a claim with the carrier, then contact ADTRAN Customer
Service. Refer to the 6. Warranty and Customer Servicesection for further information. Unless retained for
future shipment, properly dispose of all shipping material.

Mounting SequenceDue to the limited rear access availability and the possible space restriction for mounting the Retrofit Kit
equipment, a sequential pre-wiring and assembly process is recommended. This process will include
making all power, ground, and backplane wiring connections while the Total Access 3000 shelf, Total
Access 3050 Splitter Shelf, and Total Access 23-Inch Heat Baffle and Fiber Tray are resting on thetemporary mounting assembly shelf provided.
NOTE
The following assembly and wiring process is a generic procedure
intended for the majority of retrofit installations. Not all steps may apply
or be relevant to specific cabinet installations or geometry. In those
instances where the described steps do not fully apply, local procedures
that document the steps required to complete a successful Total Access
3000/3050 Retrofit Kit installation should be prepared.
Wire RequirementsEach component in the retrofit assembly has minimum wiring and connector requirements. TheDetailed
Work Instructions on page 8 outline those requirements with supplied wire gauges and terminations.
The DLC wiring has four connectors, engineered with circuits on 1-25, 1-25, 1-25, and 1-21.
NOTE
For maximum installation flexibility this document does not identify
specific wiring required for originating and terminating points. For
specific information, refer to documentation listed inTable 3. AssociatedDocumentation (Not Supplied With Kit).
Power Wiring
WARNING
Before making power connections, ensure power is disconnected at the
source and tagged out-of-service.
CAUTION
All grounds must terminate at a known ground source. Do not stack or
combine ground connections. Ensure metal-to-metal contact on ground
connections. Verify ground circuit continuity.

This section assumes that the power requirements detailed in theEngineering Guidelinessection of
Appendix B have been satisfied and that power and power wiring is available, adequate, and prepared for
the complete installation. For normal and redundant operation each component of the Total Access 3000/
3050 Retrofit Kit requires a 2-wire primary supply and return, and a 2-wire secondary supply and return
power source; a total of 12 power wires. This is reduced to 8-power wires if work instructions state notto
power the Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf. Power terminals on the retrofit components are power sharing.
Power wiring should have the appropriate end connectors installed.
Fusing
Each component of the retrofit installation must have fuse protection as follows:
Fan Module 1 amp
Total Access 3000 15 amp
Total Access 3050 5 amp*
* Necessary only if powering the Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf is required.
Additionally, the fan module has a 1-amp installed fuse adjacent to the power terminals on the backplane.
CablingRegardless of the type of termination or configuration, data cables must be pre-routed to near proximity of
their designated connection points. The DSL-side (POTS) and LINE-side (ADSL+POTS) each have two
cable groups with four connectors on each group, plus two additional cables with one connector on each
end. This totals to eighteen amphenol connectors on the Total Access 3050 end, and eighteen splice
modules on the DSL and LINE ends. Two additional cables are provided for T1 termination. Route the
cables as follows:
1. Route the three DSL cable groups to close proximity of the DLC/protector panel connection point.2. Route the three LINE cable groups to close proximity of the DLC/protector panel connection point.
3. Route the two T1 XMTand T1 RCVcables to close proximity of the T1 connection point.
NOTE
All power wires are properly terminated for connection to the Total
Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit equipment. Sufficient slack is provided to
reach the power distribution chamber from any bay. If excess slack is not
desired, the wires can be reterminated.

Data ConnectionsData connections consist of BNC connectors, amphenol connectors, and either 710-style or MS2splice

3. DETAILED WORK INSTRUCTIONSThis section details the step-by-step process of installing and wiring the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit
Kit.Appendix A: Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit Installation Summaryprovides a summary of the
installation procedure.
NOTE
Ensure power wiring is available and adequate. The Total Access 3000/
3050 Retrofit Kit installation requires up to six 48 VDC supply and
return, individually fused, power terminal pairs. Install a new fuse panel if
necessary.
Temporary Mounting Shelf and Mounting Flange InstallationThe three retrofit equipment components should be stacked on the temporary mounting shelf one atop the
other for the wiring and installation process. To begin installation of the mounting shelf, perform the
following steps:
1. Mount the temporary mounting shelf at the designated location ensuring there is a minimum 16 inches
of open rack space above it.

2. In a stacked arrangement, place the Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf on the mounting shelf and theTotal Access 3000 chassis sitting flush on top of it. Install the mounting flanges to both chassis
(usually five-inch front projection mount).
3. If not already completed, assemble the heat baffle and fan module, and install the mounting flanges.
4. Place the fan module assembly on top of the Total Access 3000 chassis.
5. Temporarily slide the stacked assembly against the rack to see where the mounting flange holes align
to the rack mounting holes. At least two holes per mounting flange must align.

6. If necessary, insert shims under the bottom chassis as necessary to raise the stacked equipment, or
make other adjustments to the temporary mounting shelf to align the flange mounting holes to the rack
holes.
NOTE
Taking the action necessary to align the mounting holes now will signifi-
cantly ease the mounting task later.
Fan Module InstallationThis procedure has three wiring requirements:
Ground wire
Power: 48 VDC A and B supply and return
Alarm output A and B connections
NOTE
Ensure that the provided 1-amp fuse is in the fan unit fuse holder.
To install the fan module, perform the following steps:
1. Attach the provided green 14 AWG ground wire with ring terminals on each end to the ground stud.
Allow the loose end to hang free.
2. Ensure slack is left in wiring during the routing process to allow the baffle/fan assembly to be pulled
out for future access if needed.
3. Connect four 18 AWG power wires (two red 48 VDC supply and two black 48 VDC return) from an
existing fuse panel in the cabinet to the fan unit power terminals. Each A and B supply must have
cabinet provided 1-amp fuse protection.
From the next available cabinet power terminals, connect the two A power wires: 48 VDC Aand
48 VDC RET A, to the fan module A power terminals.
From the next available cabinet power terminals, connect the two B power wires: 48 VDC Band
48 VDC RET B, to the fan module B power terminals.

4. Connect the alarm A and B wire ring terminals to the fan ALM Aand ALM Balarm terminal posts.
Allow the loose ends to hang free. Alarm wiring will terminate on the alarm wire-wrap posts on the
Total Access 3000.
5. After all wiring connections have been made and verified, dress and lace wiring to accepted
workmanship standards. Install any protective panels or shields that were removed for the wiring
process.
6. Install the fan and baffle shelf in the cabinet with the mounting screws provided. Label according to
local practices.

adapter module connections on the Total Access 3000 chassis and the Total Access 3050 chassis.
Total Access 3000 Wiring
This procedure has four wiring requirements:
Ground wire
Power: 48 VDC A and B supply and return
Alarm input A and B from the fan module
DS3 BNC Adapter Module connection
To make the power, alarm, and DS3 connections, perform the following steps:
1. If present, remove the ground lug from the chassis backplane. Remove the nut and star washer while
using a screwdriver (from the other side) to prevent the ground post from turning and falling out.
Retain the nut and star washer to attach the ground wire. Remove the ground lug.2. Connect 1 green ground wire using the provided 12 AWG wire w/ring terminals on each end to the
Total Access 3000 ground post. Allow the loose end to hang free.
NOTE
The Total Access 3000 has A and B primary and secondary power sharing
terminals. Power needs to be provided to both A and B terminals. Each A
and B supply must have cabinet provided 15-amp fuse protection.

Remove safety shield from the Total Access 3000 and from the next available cabinet power

frame ground must always be connected. Power is not required for normal ADSL/POTS splitter functions.

screws at the top of the modular connector.
Insert the modular connector into the Total Access 3050 backplane power connection slot and secure
the modular connector to the backplane by tightening the screws on the front of the modular
connector.
3. After all power connections have been made, label all new connections on the OSP cabinet fuse
distribution panel according to local practices. See Figure 15.

Connections Between the Total Access 3000 and Total Access 3050The following sections detail how to make RS-485 and cabling connections between the Total Access 3000
chassis and the Total Access 3050 chassis.
RS-485 Connections
To make RS-485 connections, perform the following steps:
1. Wire-wrap the RS-485 management bus wiring to the OUTposts on the Total Access 3000 backplane.
2. Wire-wrap the stub ends of the RS-485 wiring to the bus connection INposts on the Total Access 3050
backplane.
3. Terminate ground (drain) wire at the Total Access 3000 end. See Figure 16.

To connect the POTS, LINE, and T1 IMA cables, perform the following steps:
1. With the provided cables, connect the POTS IN(POTS) and ADSL+POTS OUT(LINE) amphenols to
the designated backplane connectors. The cables are appropriately labeled for amphenol connection
and pair identification: 1-24, 25-48, etc. The opposite end of these cables terminate with splice
modules. This wiring must be routed within the cabinet so the splice modules reach the associated
modules coming from the DLC to the protector field.
NOTE
There are nine POTS amphenols in three cable assemblies: Two sheathed
100-pair cables with four amphenols each, plus a single 25-pair cable
with one amphenol. Each amphenol has a corresponding splice module on
the opposite end. There are nine ADSL+POTS amphenols in three cable
assemblies: Two sheathed 100-pair cables with four amphenols each, plus
a single 25-pair cable with one amphenol. Each amphenol has a corre-

Mount ChassisThe wired chassis are now ready to mount to the OSP cabinet rack. The stacked chassis mounting flanges
should align to the designated mounting holes if they were properly aligned as instructed at the beginning
of this process. To mount the chassis to the rack rails, perform the following steps:
1. While ensuring installed wiring does not get pinched or stressed, carefully slide the stacked chassis tothe rack until the mounting flanges are flush to the rack.

2. With self-tapping screws and starting at the bottom chassis, fasten the flanges to the rack, at least two
screws per flange.
3. Ensure the Total Access 3050 filter is removed from the unit.

Reterminate DLC, Protector Block, and T1 ConnectionsTo reterminate the DLC and protector block connections, perform the following steps:
1. Reterminate the nine POTS splice modules coming from the Total Access 3050, to the matching splice
modules coming from the DLC. All cables to be labeled.
2. Using a splice module separator tool, separate the DLC/protector field connections and reterminate the

3. Reterminate the nine ADSL+POTS splice modules coming from the Total Access 3050, to the
matching splice modules coming from the protect block using a hand presser.
4. Route the T1 cables to the T1 cross connect field, and terminate according to local practices.

protector block or the cross-connect cabinet. To test the ADSL circuits, perform the following steps:
1. Insert the TAM into slot 1 of the Total Access 3000.
NOTE
If testing through protector blocks, insert 5-pin protector modules for
circuits being tested.
2. Ground tip and ring the at the cross-connect cabinet for the slot which correlates to the TAM location.
The TAM LED labeled PR1should illuminate Red for tip and Green for ring.

Test POTS Cable ContinuityThis procedure verifies continuity from the DLC shelf through the Total Access 3050 and out to the
protector panel. To test the POTS circuits, perform the following steps:
1. Insert a POTS card into slot 1 of the DLC channel bank.
2. Using a multimeter, ensure 48V power at corresponding location of Slot 1 in the protector block or
cross-connect cabinet.

ENGINEERING GUIDELINESThere are four primary areas that must be considered when planning the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit
Kit installation:
Heat Dissipation on page B-1
Power Plant Capacity on page B-2
Backup Battery Capacity on page B-4
Available Space on page B-4
Each of these will be discussed to the degree necessary to ensure a successful Total Access 3000/3050
Retrofit Kit installation. Other lesser considerations such as wiring and connectors will also be discussed.
Heat DissipationThe anticipated maximum heat generation of 224 ADSL circuits using the Total Access 3000 ADSL shelf
and Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf, plus the fan module power draw is approximately 500 watts. It ispreferred that other heat generating equipment not be mounted directly below this equipment due to added
heat flowing up and into the ADSL shelf.
CAUTION
As a general rule, if the existing metallic cabinet is not equipped with a
heat exchanger, or cannot otherwise dissipate an additional 500 watts, the
Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit installation may not be feasible.
All electronic equipment generates a certain amount of heat that should not be allowed to stagnate within
the confines of the equipment itself. Heat dissipation and air flow are extremely important issues for theproper performance of any electronic equipment, no matter where it is installed.
In an outside plant metallic cabinet, heat is generated by both the electronic equipment installed and by
solar penetration. Metallic cabinets have the ability to dissipate only a small amount of that heat without
assistance. The amount of heat a cabinet can dissipate is limited by its design. To overcome this limitation
most cabinets are equipped with a heat exchanger to increase the heat dissipation capacity and therefore
allow for more equipment to be installed in them. While the various configurations of metallic cabinets are
typically designed with these factors in mind, care must be taken so that the addition of new equipment
does not exceed its design limitations.
Typically, the manufacturer of a metallic outside plant cabinet provides the heat dissipation capacity of the
cabinet and is usually expressed in watts. The amount of heat generated by the equipment inside the
cabinet is also expressed in watts. It is important to identify these values prior to adding equipment to anymetallic cabinet.
Air flow within the cabinet is extremely important. Stagnant hot air within the cabinet and within the
equipment itself can have a dramatic negative impact on proper equipment operation. To overcome this
potential, fans are installed to provide improved air flow to eliminate hot spots (heat buildup around heat
generating electronic chips) that can shorten the life span of those chips.

Determination of Heat Dissipation Capacity
CAUTION
The ratings on the heat exchangers installed in many cabinets are based
on a 20C difference when comparing interior and exterior temperatures.
This figure does not take into consideration the solar effect on the cabinet.
For heat loading analysis, assume that the additional solar effects from
direct sunlight will decrease the capacity of the heat exchanger by 20%.
Therefore, for example, the calculated internal heat load of a cabinet with
a 1400 W (rated) heat exchanger should not exceed 1120 W (80% of
1400 W). This value could vary if a solar shield is installed.
It is difficult to develop hard and fast rules for adding equipment to every type of outside plant metallic
cabinet. Again, air flow within the cabinet and the heat dissipation of the cabinet and heat exchanger(s)
affect the viability of adding equipment inside the cabinet. Ideally, the calculations for heat dissipation
capacity should result with enough cushion to ensure proper operation of the equipment to be added. If
the existing cabinet does not have a heat exchanger, it is probable that it cannot dissipate enough heat to
add high density equipment.
1. Determine the heat dissipation capacity of the cabinet (Value A).
The cabinet manufacturers documentation should provide this information. This value must be
investigated to see if it includes the 20% difference for solar loading, or if a solar shield is installed.
2. Determine the amount of heat generated by the equipment currently installed and working in the
existing cabinet. (Value B)
Value B heat is generated by all powered equipment including the power supply. This information
should be located in the manufacturers documentation for each specific product.
NOTE
The isolated and vented battery and battery warmer should not be
included in heat calculations.
3. To derive the approximate value of additional heat dissipation capacity within the existing cabinet,
Subtract Value B from Value A.
The resulting value should be more than the additional heat generated by the retrofit equipment (500
watts).
Power Plant CapacityThe power requirement for the Total Access 3000 plus the Total Access 3050 Splitter Shelf deploying 224
ADSL circuits, plus the fan module is approximately 11 amps. If the power supply in the existing cabinet
does not have sufficient incremental capacity over the existing equipment requirements, additional power
will have to be provided in the cabinet.

Available Capacity for New EquipmentAn existing cabinet is typically equipped such that the power supply provides adequate DC amperage
required by the electronics currently installed. In most cases there is sufficient additional power capacity to
drive new equipment added to the cabinet. It should be noted that while there is sufficient capacity, there
may not be enough modular rectifiers installed to provide power for additional equipment over and above
the current configuration.
Power capacity can be added to many power supplies with additional modular rectifiers. The existing
power supply may have modular rectifiers that could either be replaced with a higher amperage rated
rectifier(s) or that has an available slot for an additional rectifier that will provide enough DC power for the
new equipment. Verify that the power wiring is sufficient to handle the current.
Calculating Power Plant CapacityThere are two primary categories of power consuming equipment in an OSP cabinet:
Electronic equipment
Cabinet heat exchanger
To determine if there is enough excess power capacity, or that sufficient rectifiers are available, the power
requirements of each these two primary categories must be determined.
The existing DLC and any other active electronic equipment in a cabinet has a maximum power draw
value expressed in watts or amps. These values can be found in the specific vendor documentation.
To calculate the power available, the following formula is an example for deriving the value.
Example:Assume two 672 line DLC systems are installed in the cabinet:
Values are for calculation purposes only.
HP = Heat Exchanger Power Draw = 5 amps
DP = 672 Line DLC System Power Draw = 13 amps x 2
MP = Mux Power Draw (OC-12) = 10 amps
OP = Other Equipment Power Draw = 48 watts = 1 amp
TP = Total Power Draw for the cabinet as
configured = HP + DP + MP + OP
If a cabinet is populated with the equipment referenced in the example above, the Total Power Draw for the
configuration is HP + DP + MP + OP = 42 amps (or, 5 + (2 x 13) + 10 + 1) = 42 amps).
If the existing power supply has a capacity of 75 amps and has modular rectifiers, it is simple to determine
the amount of power available in the cabinet as configured. A typical configuration may have space for
five 15-amp rectifiers for a total output of 75 amps. If redundant power is required, the rule of thumb is
usually designated as N+1; where N = Number of rectifiers needed for the required power output and +1 =
one additional rectifier for redundancy.
If the existing power supply is modular and is equipped with four 15-amp rectifiers, then there are enough
rectifiers for the legacy configuration (3 @ 15 amps) with one additional 15-amp rectifier for redundancy.
Therefore, to ensure there is enough power capacity for the additional ADTRAN ADSL equipment, one
15-amp rectifier should be installed in the existing power supply bringing the total to 5 rectifiers.

Backup Battery CapacityAs previously described, the power requirement for the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit is
approximately 11 amps. If the backup battery plant in the existing cabinet is to support the operation of all
equipment installed for eight (8) hours, the batteries should have an additional 88 Ahr capacity over and
above the capacity required for supporting the existing equipment (including the heat exchanger fans).If the additional Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit equipment is to be connected to the existing power
supply, unless some type of isolating power switch is installed, the new equipment will draw from the
existing backup battery plant when commercial AC power is lost.
An alternative to this arrangement is to install a new separate power supply for the Total Access 3000/3050
Retrofit Kit equipment so it is isolated from the battery plant.
The desired arrangement, the isolation switch or an additional power supply, should be determined before
planning for the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit installation.
Available Space
The Total Access 3000 and 3050 chassis are each 6-inches high. The fan module is 4-inches high for a totalof 16 inches. Their stacked configuration must be maintained for both fan cooling of the Total Access
3000, and the included jumper cable lengths connecting the Total Access 3000 to the Total Access 3050.
Because of access restrictions, all three chassis will be wired up while resting on a temporary assembly
shelf. The wired chassis will then be positioned to the rack and mounted, and the assembly shelf removed.
Assembly ShelfIt should be noted that the assembly shelf requires an additional 4 inches of rack space. Although removed
after installation, the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit therefore requires a total of 20 inches of rack
space. However, this 4-inch buffer zone allows an additional heat baffle to be installed in the event a heat
generating component is mounted beneath the retrofit equipment.
Support Equipment SpaceAlthough designed for installation without the need for additional equipment, in some cases the cabinets
legacy equipment may not be sufficient to support retrofit installation, additional space may be required to
install termination interfaces (modems, NIU), fiber termination, or power supply. This additional space is
independent of the Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit required space.
CABLING SCHEMESThis section describes some cabling schemes in the equipment chamber area of the OSP cabinet where the
equipment is installed, and then wired to the protection field typically located in the end chamber.
POTS IN (POTS) Cabling - Protection RequirementsThe DLC POTS pairs must be cabled to the POTS IN side of the Total Access 3050 shelf via 25-pair cables
with 50-pin amphenols on the back of the Total Access 3050 shelf. This can be done by connecting to the
splice module connectors at the side of the existing DLC channel bank. This method does not require
additional lightning protection.

ADSL + POTS OUT (LINE) Cabling - Protection RequirementsOnce POTS IN circuits are connected to the Total Access 3050 shelf, the ADSL+POTS OUT cabling
termination method should be determined. This can be done by connecting to the splice modules at the side
of the legacy DLC channel bank. This method does not require additional lightning protection.
DLC ConnectionsThere are two possible DLC wiring methods possible as shown in Figure B-1below. Many DLC channel
banks are wired from the backplane on 50-pin connectors. However, some DLC channel banks have pairs
124 on each of four connectors and dropping the 25th pair from each binder group, while other channelbanks have the first 96 pairs wired and dropping the last four pairs out of a 100 pair cable (25, 25, 25, 21).

Inside the cabinet, the DLC channel bank is wired to the protector panel then on to the field distribution
pairs.
In any configuration, the wiring rework plan for this Total Access 3000/3050 Retrofit Kit is to separate the
DLC from the protector panel and insert the retrofit equipment between them. Both the input and outputcabling from the Total Access 3050 will have either 710-style or MS2splice module connectors to match
the legacy (equipment-side and field-side) connectors.
The standard retrofit configuration will have either MS2type or 710-style connectors coming from the
Total Access 3050. There are twenty 50-pin amphenols on the Total Access 3050 backplane arranged in a
vertical configuration. For this application nine of the amphenols are designated for POTS coming from
the DLC, and nine designated for ADSL+POTS for termination on the protect panel. The remaining two
amphenols, located left-most on the rear of the backplane (P27and P28), are designated for T1 IMA
transport.
NOTE
In any retrofit configuration, the new equipment is to be surge protected
with the protector panel between the Total Access 3050 and the field or
the network.
