Why learn with me?
Type Tool • This tool is used to create text layers • Once you create a text box you use the Type
tool to later edit that text • Shortcut is T • Click the green check mark to commit changes
or press Ctrl+Enter or Cmd+Return on a Mac
Formatting Text • You can change formatting settings as you
would in a word processor • Font • Font style (where possible) • Font size • Alignment • Leading • Colour
Handwriting fonts • Add a personal touch to your pages • Save time on selecting fonts • Darcy Baldwin • YourFonts
Leading to align text with lines • Select your text • ‘Scrub’ your mouse over the two A icons until
it align • Remember to set it to auto or reset the tool to
restore the leading to default settings for next time.
Clipping paper to a font • Create your own alpha • Type your text • Ctrl+G or Cmd+G to clip the paper to text
Adding strokes and effects • Use the Effects panel
– Layer Effects for the default styles and onces you have installed
• Create your own styles • Layer – Add Layer Style
– Drop Shadow – Glow – Strokes
Blend modes and opacity • Play with the blending modes to blend your
text into the paper • Reducing the opacity can also help

Misting and masks • Create some text • Create a new layer • Ctrl click on the type layer in the Layers Panel • Invert selection to mist outside the text • Ensure the new blank layer is selected • Use a spray paint brush to create the mist • Hide the text layer
Aligning and justifying text • Fully justify your text (make it even on both
left and right margins) • Although the only options on the tool bar
are Left, Center and Right, you can also fully justify your text by pressing Ctrl+Shift+J (Mac: Cmd+Shift+J)
Change colour of your Text • Alt+Backspace (Option+Backspace) sets your
text to the colour of the Foreground Colour • Ctrl+Backspace (Command+Backspace) sets
your text to the colour of the Background Colour
Text on a path • You can use new tool in
Photoshop Elements 10 to create a path
• Draw a line • Click the green tick • Type your text
Text on a path • In PSE 9 or earlier you can use a pre-made
path • Open the PSD file in Photoshop Elements • Duplicate the layer (into your layout) • Use your type tool to select the text and
replace it
Text in a shape • Draw a shape using the Custom Shape tool • Click within the shape using the text tool (be
sure the text colour is different to your shape colour!)
• Type your text • Hide the shape by clicking on the Eye icon in
the Layers panel if you don’t want the shape to show on your finished page
