What began as a wall mounted coffee maker, then a portable do-anything machine, ended up turning tea making on its head.
Early ideation resulted in many small or portable units. Ergonomic and psychological considerations.

However, a kettle that does hand stands can’t spill everywhere and sealing proved diffi cult. Early models integrated a handle-and-locking solution into the lid but there was no resolution; it was too complex. A simpler mechanism was the most elegant solution.

Tea is the most enjoyed beverage behind water, and the electric kettle is becoming a mainstay in kitchens, why not get the one appliance that can manage both?
Visually differentiated contact points on the lid separate the tea compartment from the pour spout
Timothy Harris 29
This kettles symmetric form, coupled with clever cord management in the base, allow it to sit fl ush against any wall
Simply heat your water, fi ll with tea and invert to steep. Its insulated wall will keep your tea hot for hours.

Initial research indicated the most important factors are rider comfort, rider safety, and available storage. After throwing everything at the wall, what stuck was a storage solution. Attaching cleanly to the frame triangle proved to be diffi cult, however.

Early prototypes suffered from various physical impossibilities. Either the fabric would bunch up making it unsightly, or the pockets wouldn’t be secure. Combining two early ideas, a bag and the wrap, solved the problem by distributing force in different directions.

Focusing on new prototyping methods, our fi rst task was a scavenger hunt. Various items were combined to create a function
Two preliminary prototypes, a glowing lanyard and an accessory-fl ash, are combined to fi nd a fi nal direction

Round two of sketches: determining form and user interaction
Dozens of small models were made to work out details and fi nd a form that was playful and easy to use
Result:A passively powered phone accessory that will improve poorly-lit self-shots (selfi es).
This course compounded the necessity of “prototype early, prototype often,” and proper procedure. While daunting at fi rst, the milling experience will prove invaluable for future model making.
