Theme Revisited What is Theme? Do you remember? How would you explain what theme is? Difference? How is THEME different from the THEMATIC ISSUES? Family Love Coming of Age War Revisit the Literary Elements Weve Covered so Far 1)Setting 2)Characters Static Dynamic Foil pairs 3) Similes and Metaphors 4)Allusions 5)Foreshadowing 6)Motifs 7)Others. In FILM Class We add cinematic elements to consider: Camera angles Camera motion Color palette Lighting Sound / music choices Etc..(all the stuff we will learn this semester) What is New Here? Before We asked, what is A or THE theme. If you could reason it out, it was VALID and good. Now We must observe items, track them in the text, propose how we learned the THEME from this progression. HOW does the text teach the theme rather than it just does. Steps You Should Take for Film Analysis 1)Identify (Observe / Summarize) that a literary (cinematic) element is happening! Tracking elements in a journal is a good idea. 2)Think about how that element is treated IN the text. This is why we encourage you to view actively! 3)Think about (Analyze) how you might be being pushed (by the author) to react to that and to learn from it. For exampleSetting What should we learn when characters overcome a very difficult setting? Character overcoming the isolation of the moon in Moon What should we learn when a character challenges the rules of a setting? Cates challenging the rules of Inherit the Wind Setting Example in Film For exampleCharacters If a good character does good things, what should WE learn from that? Ralph from Lord of the Flies Cates from Inherit the Wind If a character changes (dynamic character)and learns about how to do things better, what should WE learn from that? Rachel from Inherit the Wind Great Characters from Film For exampleCinematic Elements Why might a director use a high angle while filming this character? Why might a director choose to have a certain style of music playing behind a fight scene? Why might a director choose intentionally long shots (slow editing) during a particular moment? For exampleImagery What does it teach us if a Christ-like character dies (and does NOT return? Simon in Lord of the Flies Brady in Inherit the Wind Joe in Johnny Got His Gun What does it teach us if a Devil-like character is defeated? War in Johnny Got His Gun In General If we see something positive, the text is probably trying to teach us that WE should do something similar. If we see something negative, the text is probably trying to teach us that WE should do the opposite. CHALLENGE What is positive? What is negative? Next Practice Steps 1) We must identify what is happening in the text. 2) We must THINK about those observations 3) We must CONSIDER what we are to learn THROUGH those observations! What we observe. Why it matters in the text. So what Sentence Frame of Helpfulness In the text of ____________________, the author uses ___________________ (insert literary / cinematic device) to illuminate the theme that ________________. He/she teaches the lesson through ________________________ (the same literary / cinematic element as the second blank) when _______________________ (explain HOW that literary / cinematic element teaches what you think it teaches this WILL NEED to be a few sentences!). SUMMARY ANALYSIS Lets Practice!
