The winners of Tempo Documentary Festival 2017!
The winners of the various competitions at Tempo Documentary Festival’s eighteenth edition have now been appointed. During the award ceremony, that took take place on Saturday night at Theater Tre in Stockholm, six awards and three honorable mentions were given in total. Several of the documentaries will be presented during Tempo Documentary Festival’s program on Sunday. Stefan Jarl International Documentary Award Stefan Jarl International Documentary Award is the award for the best international documentary and is presented with the support of the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundat-‐ion. The prize is 2000 euros. Winner I Am Not Your Negro by Raoul Peck
Motivation: The Stefan Jarl International Documentary Award goes to a film that tells us a story that is more important today than in a very long time. It opens perspectives on how to see things as they are, of race relations but also in a deep meaning of what it means to be a human being, living in a conflicted and complex world where no easy solutions exist. Director Raoul Peck has given us a fluid, personal work with a message that resonates all around the world for those who will listen. Tempo Documentary Award Tempo Documentary Award is one of Sweden’s biggest documentary film competitions where the winning director is awarded with 75 000 kronor. The award is presented with support from the Swedish Film Institute and the Influence Film Club. Winner After Inez by Karin Ekberg Motivation: A film that is hard to see, hard to comprehend, but that breaks the silence and gives us a deeper understanding of the human condition. A film about loss, but above all love that – thanks to the filmmaker's respectful sense of integrity and not least Denize and Philip's courage and generosity – leaves us with a gratitude to have gained insight into something that no one ever really wants to understand; how one masters to live with a constant grief. Honorable mention The traffic lights turn blue tomorrow by Ragnhild Ekner Motivation: For having its very own voice, the courage to be just that, and a belief for what is being documented. From a time, a group of people, a life that many have forgotten. We salute the spontaneity, when the documentary becomes art and talks -‐ about someone who meant a lot to many. Intensely poetic, painfully beautiful. Tempo Short Award Tempo Short Award is a competition for best Swedish short documentary where the winning director is awarded with 75 000 SEK. The award is presented with support from the Swedish Film Institute and Filmregion Stockholm-‐Mälardalen. Winner Studio 5 by Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck Motivation: For an unmistakable artistic expression that presents social hierarchies with a subtle humor, and makes us see new creation with new eyes. The film illustrates our eerie distance with each other and the world around us. Honorable mention Letters to Sweden by Salad Hilowle Motivation: An honorable mention to a film by a director, we want to see more of. Flowing storytelling, the inspiring desire for something and memorable words such as “Forget one’s origin – look at someone’s heart.” Letter to Sweden! New Doc The prize consists of 70 000 SEK, whereof 30 000 SEK goes to technical support and is given to a promising new documentary film director for an upcoming film project. The New Doc award is given in collaboration with Filmbasen/Film Stockholm, Film i Öst,
Filmpool Jämtland, FilmCloud/Kultur i Väst, Film i Dalarna, Filmpool Nord, Kultur i Halland – Film. Winner One Ticket Please by Matiss Kaza Motivation: With this year’s New Doc award we pay tribute today to a determined, passionate and almost unsympathetic woman that lives by her own rules. With sensitive narrative and beautiful photography, the film keeps surprising us. The director allows the character to unfold her life step-‐by-‐step without interfering. Her life philosophy can be summarized in the following words by her: “I don’t believe in common sense. Everything that people call common sense is learnt behaviour.” Honorable mention: The Promise by Paula Gustafsson Motivation: With an exceptional ability to create intimacy, the director created the warm love portrait of two elderly women. The film provides a beautiful and painful glimpse of old age in the proximity of death, and uncovers relationships rarely seen on film. Tempo Pitch Tempo Pitch is the competition for new documentary ideas. The prize consists of 75 000 SEK in development funds. The competition is organized in collaboration with Swedish Television/Documentary, the Swedish Film Institute/Film Commissioner Documentary and Filmregion Stockholm-‐Mälardalen.
Winner The Witch Anna by Peter Gerdehag, Malcolm Dixelius and Zara Arrehed Motivation: The award goes to a film that does not try to please the crowd and gives insight into a world that evokes both curiosity and fascination through an uncompromi-‐sing character that had enough and radically re-‐creates her life. The juries hope, exactly like the filmmakers, that the award can be used in order to provide a deeper understan-‐ding of the family as a constitution while portraying the main character’s quest for accep-‐tance. The Tempo Pitch 2017 goes to a pre-‐Christian history that aims to heal people in our modern time. Short Dox Radio In the Short Dox Radio competition, ten three-‐minute radio documentaries compete for the prize of 5000 SEK. The award was established by Bengt Bok, a professor of radio production at the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts. Winner The Last Schnapps by Jon Jordås Motivation: For a depiction that without sentimentality, and in all its simplicity, tells a story about existence itself. About death, and the song of life.
