THE UNITING PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
RESPONSE
TO HIV/AIDS AND TEENAGE CHALLENGES
This is the stage of adolescence where we worry about feelings and changes in body.
There is a continuos search for self identity and dignity sometimes
accompanied by confusion, rebellion and mistrust.
Parenting or mentoring is a huge challenge at this stage and peer
pressure is at the stage of all influences.
We surround ourselves by those we model and we experience intense physical and social changes
Focus Early Adolescence
Middle Adolescence
Late Adolescence
Independence Less interest in parental activities
Peak of parental conflicts
Re acceptance of parental advice/values
Body image Preoccupation with self and pubertal changes
-acceptance of body-concern over making body more attractive
Acceptance of pubertal changes
Peers Intense relationships -peek of peer involvement-conformity with peer values-increased sexual activity and experimentation
Identity -Increased cognition-Increased fantasy world-Idealistic vocational goals
-increased scope of feelings-increased intellectual ability-risk taking behaviour
-Practical, realistic vocational goals-Refinement of moral, religious and sexual values-ability to compromise and set limitsSource: Lawrence S. Neinstein, M.D. Adolescent Health Care: A practical Guide, 2nd Edition, Urban and
Schwarzenberg/Baltimore-Munich, 1991
This program aims at addressing adolescence challenges
identified above:
Peer pressure Intense relationships Risk taking behaviour Conformity with peer values Idealistic and not realistic goals for life Increased sexual activity and experimentation
These observations lead to a conclusion that young people
are at high risk of HIV infection.
Theological reflection on sexual purity: Promoting abstinence
2 Tim 2: 22 Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Psalms 119:2 “How can and young man/woman keep his way pure? By living according to your word.
Genesis 39:9 “How then can I do such a wicked thing and sin against God..”Joseph found favour in the eyes of God and he prospered (39:2)
Thanking you
