Teacher Training Course Outline
Background to The Thoughtful Body™
Rachel Rafiefar is the Director of The Thoughtful Body™ which was established in
1994 as a way of bringing mind, body, spirit and exercise together, using the Pilates
Method as a medium. She trained in 1989 with Alan Herdman and has over 23 years in
the Pilates Industry having gained a professional reputation for quality and innovative
teaching.
Having taught in Stockholm and London, Rachel moved to the Midlands and established
The Thoughtful Body™ Teacher Training Program in June 2000 She has lectured for
organisations such as the National Childbirth Trust, Zen School of Shiatsu, Guild of
Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Teachers, Pilates Foundation UK, European College of
Bowen Studies, IMDC and Derby University. She was a Founder Member and Director of
the Pilates Foundation where she taught, served on the Education Committee and
examined from 1997 to 2012. She is a Founder Member of the Independent Pilates
Teachers Association (IPTA) and is currently serving on the Board of Directors.
All of our courses currently adhere to the training standards set by the CYQ division of
the Independent Pilates Teachers Association Ltd (IPTA). The Pilates Industry is now
affiliated with the Register of Exercise Professionals and Skills Active. We are able to
offer the new Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork accredited through
the London Central YMCA. On completion of this training The Thoughtful Body offers
our graduates both professional and vocational certification in small apparatus, specialist
populations, rehabilitation, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Reformer as well as other
specialist training.

Why choose us?
Out learner intake exceeds no more than 12 learners to maximise learning and
develop interpersonal teaching skills and create a comfortable learning
environment.
The Course Director is personable and directly liases with all of the learners.
We offer a learner liason officer who can help you with queries or problems
during your training.
Course learning is blended with lecture time and e-learning to help you facilitate
your study at a managable pace and offer on line support throughout your
training.
Course tuition is delivered using a multilayered approach to teaching and
learning styles.
Upon qualifying on the Diploma Course graduates can join the Register of
Exercise Professionals (REPS) . All garduates can apply to become a member of
Independent Pilates Teachers Association Ltd (IPTA) which can offer Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) with a variety of knowledgable and experienced
teachers.
Criteria for Acceptance
Applicants should ideally have a previous background in exercise and/or
movement although we acknowledge that many of our teachers come from a
wide variety of backgrounds. They should have completed a minimum of 25
Pilates sessions which can be either fully Matwork or a combination of Matwork
and Studio Sessions with a suitably qualified Pilates teacher. Should an applicant
have difficulty in achieving these criteria, please seek assistance of the Course
director Rachel Rafiefar as all applications will be considered in the interview
process.
Applicants must demonstrate commitment to and passion for Pilates.

Applicants must pass the interview process. This will include a verbal and
physical assessment. An assessment fee may be involved if an interview is taken
outside of a visit to a Training Day.
The Teacher Training Programme Outline
Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Who is CYQ? CYQ was launched in 1998 and is the UK's leading health and fitness specific awarding body, developing, and awarding nationally recognised health and fitness qualifications. CYQ's Mission Statement is: To raise standards in the delivery of health-related activity, fitness, and well being; awarding qualifications and providing independent quality assurance services. Through the development of skills, knowledge and competence in relation to teaching Pilates, the learner will be able to plan, instruct and evaluate a safe and effective Pilates session to work in an unsupervised capacity. All units are mandatory and learners should complete all units to gain certification
The total credit value for the Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Pilates on the Qualifications Framework is 37. Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 are delivered through a series of E learning with e mail, telephone and Skype support. Our learning includes multimedia resources and structured self-study in both theory sessions and practical sessions. Due to the varied natures of our delivery and training Units 5 and 6 will also contain practical elements of Units 1 to 4. Once you have been accepted onto the course you will be sent the CYQ Induction pack which will further outline the course.
You are encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning and to participate fully in all aspects of the course.
It is important that learners are aware that the course will involve a small amount of homework at the end of each day. This may involve some written work or practice of teaching skills and exercise technique.

Assessment Methods The methods of assessment you will encounter are:
(a) Formative Assessment: on-going assessment throughout the course in order
to provide feedback on what you are learning.
(b) Summative Assessment: this is a final assessment in order to obtain a result,
which will count towards your overall assessment result.
(c) Continuous Assessment: on-going throughout the course
Once you have been accepted onto the course a full outline of your assessments will be available to you. All learners are expected to attend Pilates classes during the training. Mentoring sessions are recommended throughout the Level 3 training.Time must be given by the learner for their own physical application of the work and home study. Should a learner have certain strengths in one area and weakness in another, more time should be given to the area of weakness.
All units must be completed before the final exam. Exam dates will be set in advance within one month of the final course date in accordance with the availability of examiners.

Course Duration
The course is taught part-time over a minimum period of six months.
Pilates training occurs approximately once or twice a month in Derby City, Derbyshire on a Sunday and Monday.
The day begins at 10.00am and finishes at 5.00pm.
Course dates 2014 Jan 26th, 27th Feb 9th, 10th March 23rd, 24th April 27th, 28th May 18th, 19th June 15th, 16th Final exams to be set for end of June, beginning of July dependent upon Assessor’s availability.
Final theory and practical examinations will be in January 2014 examiner’s availability

Course fees increase by 5% annually in January
Course fees are made payable one month before commencement of training.
The fees can either be paid
1. In full at the start of the course. Please make cheque payable to TTB (UK) Ltd
2. In two installments. The first installment is to be paid one month before the start of the course and the second installment to be paid 6 months after the start of the course.
This payment system will incur a 5% fee on the second installment.
3. By direct debit payments per month for a period of 10 months commencing one month before the start of the course. This payment system will incur a 5% fee on the course fee.

Should you decide to leave the course at any time, in the first instant you will be offered a deferment. If you choose not to exercise this option then there will be a forfeiture of a percentage of your fees depending on when you leave the course. Two weeks before the start: 25% One week before the start: 35% First or second week of course: 45% Anytime after this the second week: 80%

Please read the following information through very carefully before the commencement of the course. Course Guidelines 1. The Thoughtful Body reserves the right to cancel the course no less than one month before start date without obligation. If The Thoughtful Body cannot complete the course all fees for scheduled lectures only will be refunded in full. 2. All payments must be received in full prior or as agreed to commencing the course. 3. All course hours will be scheduled in advance, however due to unforeseen circumstances dates may be changed if unavoidable. As much notice as possible will be given. 4. This is a physically demanding course all learners must be in good health, and physically prepared to undertake the work that will be studied, (all cases will be considered on an individual basis). 5. Safe practice and the health of the learners are of the utmost importance on this course and as in normal teaching practice all learners will be required to complete a medical questionnaire prior to starting the course; (any problems will be considered on an individual basis). Failure to disclose important information may not only jeopardise your place on the course but could result in injury. All learners must be responsible for informing their trainers of any problems that may occur no matter how trivial they seem. Attendance Although run as part time course learners must give a full time commitment, all lectures, teaching practice and assisting/apprentice hours are compulsory. All learners must arrive on time and prepared for lectures, lateness causes disruption to lecturers and fellow learners. All learners will be given a work log to fill in. All learners must regularly attend classes for their own personal and physical development. The Thoughtful Body™ cannot accept responsibility for learners falling behind in their studies due to personal problems or injuries, (all cases will be considered on an individual basis). The Thoughtful Body™ cannot guarantee to offer extra tuition time for learners falling behind in their studies. Any extra tuition available will be at the learners’ own expense.

Learners missing course hours will be expected to make up lost time, arrange to copy any notes given and complete any homework set. 9. All learners must have a minimum attendance of 80% of the course hours to be entered into the exam. 10. The Thoughtful Body™ reserves the right to defer a learners place due to illness or injury until they are able to complete the course safely. Course Work 1. Learners will be provided with training manuals covering subjects taught during the course. There are aspects of the course where trainees are expected to fill out the information and research for themselves. 2. Regular reading will be given throughout the course in preparation for training days 3. Regular homework assignments will be given. These must be finished on time and if possible typed, printed and handed in a clear plastic envelope. Do not send any course work via e mail. 4. Each learner will have the opportunity to request personal tutorial time at regular intervals during the course. Learners or the trainer will request this when they feel it necessary. 5. Learners will be continuously assessed throughout the course with knowledge reviews, exam type questions and question and answer sessions. 6. A theoretical and practical mock exam will be given prior to final exams to assess learner’s strengths and weaknesses. 7. Learners will be encouraged to practice teaching what they have learned as soon as possible, insurance and safety issues will be discussed before this begins. Disciplinary Action 1. If a learner’s attendance, performance in either practical or theoretical work, or behaviour falls below the accepted level then the learner will be given a verbal warning and the opportunity to improve. If no improvement is seen then a written warning will given. Any future failure to improve may result in the trainee being terminated from the course. 2. The Independent Pilates Teacher Association provides a support system for learners to help with any disciplinary situation that may arise. An arbitrator can be provided if needed to help resolve any problems between trainees and course tutors.
