The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ June 2, 2013
You Give Them Something to Eat
Throughout the past weeks, we have been celebrating various aspects of our Catholic identity.W
are an Easter people: in Christ and with Christ, we rise to new life.We are a Spirit-filled people
empowered to bear witness to a diversity of gifts in one Spirit. We are created in the image of th
Trinity: our God is a loving communion of persons.Today, as we celebrate the feast of Corpu
Christi, we proclaim our identity as a Eucharistic people. We who receive the Body and Blood Christ are transformed to become Christs Body broken for others, his Blood poured out in love fo
all humanity.
Todays readings short and simple express that profound mystery. Abram offers a tithe t
Melchizedek, the priest of God most high; Paul recalls Jesus supreme gesture of love at the Las
Supper, the gift of his Body and Blood; and finally, Jesus multiplies the loaves and fishes, feedin
the multitudes from the meager supplies provided by the disciples. We look around us, and w
see the overwhelming needs of the world. We become discouraged, want to give up even befor
we start. And still, Jesus challenges us: you give them something to eat.He invites us to brin
forth the little we have, to share it generously. Then, lo and behold, he takes it and works miraclewith it.(This is something our food pantry volunteers experience on a regular basis!)
We are a people formed and shaped by the Eucharist. We are the hands, the feet, the presence
Jesus in the world. As we gather in the hall after the 11 a.m. Mass today, celebrating all th
volunteers who share their time and talents so generously within our parish, we will see the livin
presence of Christ in our midst: each member of the Body unique, precious, and irreplaceable
each contributing in his or her way to the common good.May each of us continue to bear visib
witness to Christs presence, as we become more fully the One we receive in communion: for w
are the Body of Christ!
When the sacred bread is broken/ All receive the Christ as one.By his love Christ is transforming / Though so many we are one;
All the scattered are united/ All the lonely welcomed home.
