This year’s RI Spring Flower & Garden Show combines America’s pas-sion for gardening with our love affair for classic cars. Vintage au-tos will be the centerpieces for the gardens on display. Nothing stirs memories more than period automobiles. Some of the most talented landscapers in the Northeast will create their own unique gardens with classic autos of their choice. Examples may include a ‘50s period gar-den featuring a classic Bel Air or an Italian piazza featuring a classic Ferrari. The 2014 RI Spring Flower & Garden Show will be like no other show in the country.
Advanced Tickets$17 per person (must be purchased by February 12, 2014)$19 at the door

Correction from the RI Spring Flower & Garden Show BrochureOur brochure mistakenly included last year’s description from the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs. This is the correct information for 2014:
The members of the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs are proud to present a Standard Flower Show, “It’s All About Time,” at the Providence Convention Center, February 20-23, 2014. The designs will be creative and beautiful, the horticulture educational, and the artistic crafts elegant and exciting. Deco-rated clock faces will be an intriguing challenge for our youth. We invite you to come to our show and enjoy the beauty and creativity of the talented members of our organization.

Brent ridge & Josh Kilmer-PurcellThe Fabulous Beekman Boyssaturday, February 22 at 12pm & sunday, February 23 at 2pmAbout the presenter: Beekman 1802 is a TV show, mercantile, bestselling cook-book and memoir, website and tourism destination all inspired by the Beekman
1802 Farm in Sharon Springs, NY.When Josh Kilmer-Purcell (advertising executive and NY
Times bestselling author of I Am Not Myself These Days and The Bucolic Plague) and his partner Brent Ridge (physician and former Vice President of Healthy Living for Martha Stewart Om-nimedia) purchased the historic Beekman 1802 Farm in 2007, they had no idea that it would launch one of the “fastest grow-ing lifestyle brands in the country.” (Source: Nasdaq) Originally just a weekend getaway from their hectic NYC lives, the farm became their lifeline after both men lost their jobs within one month of each other during the recession of 2008. Faced with possible foreclosure, the pair made a decision: if they were go-ing to save their farm, they would have to make it profitable.
After taking in a neighboring farmer and his herd of beloved dairy goats, Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell began producing soaps and cheese. As other neighbors taught them how to farm, Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell shared their city-honed skills: starting a web-site and mercantile. The men began working with several other local farmers and artisans to market their goods, and the entire village came together to host seasonal festivals, which are now attended by thousands of visitors from around the globe.
Soon the press began noticing this little farm and village that
refused to give up, including the New York Times, Daily News, and USA Today. A television network launched a reality show about their effort – The Fabulous Beekman Boys, now airing on Cooking Channel – which spread the Beekman message of hard work, liv-ing seasonally, and neighborly sharing around the globe.
In 2012, the duo competed and won the grand prize in CBS’s The Amazing Race. Over 10 million viewers watched for 12 weeks as Ridge and Kilmer-Purcell beat 20 other competitors in a 45,000-mile race around the world through 12 cities in nine different countries.
Beekman 1802 has proven that a farm can be much bigger than its fences. The farm might just be one place on a map, but they count as their neighbors folks from all around the world.
roger swAinHost, The Victory Gardensaturday, February 22 at 1pm; sunday, February 23 at 12pmAbout the presenter: Roger Swain, “the man with the red suspenders,” is recog-nized by millions as host of The Victory Garden, television’s longest-running
gardening show. For 15 years Roger planted and pruned, har-vested and chatted with PBS viewers across the country. More recently, he co-hosted People, Places and Plants on HGTV, a show which celebrates New England gardens and gardeners, and features Roger’s commentary, “Food for Thought.”
A biologist, gardener, writer and storyteller, Roger Swain was born and raised outside Boston. He graduated from

Harvard College, and went on to earn a Ph.D. studying the behavior of ants in tropical rain forests, before becoming Sci-ence Editor of Horticulture magazine. Since 1978 readers have been enjoying Roger’s essays and articles in that magazine, as well as his five books: Earthly Pleasures, Field Days, The Prac-tical Gardener, Saving Graces, and Groundwork. When he is not editing, writing, filming, or meeting with gardeners across the country, Roger can be found at work in the orchard and gardens of his New Hampshire farm.

chris FletcherLocal manager & arborist representative, Bartlett Tree Expertssaturday, February 22 at 2pmAbout the presenter: Chris Fletcher has a lifelong passion for the trees of New Eng-land. Raised in Bristol, RI, he spent much of his childhood with his father, a natural-
ist, visiting the woods of Mount Hope. These outdoor experiences made him acutely aware of the forest in its functional, cultural, and aesthetic qualities. Chris followed his passion to earn a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design, gaining a comprehensive knowledge of the science and aesthetics of arboriculture. Following gradua-tion, Chris spent twelve years with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation writing tree preservation reports to protect lo-cal tree populations during road construction projects. In addition to his position as an Arborist Representative for Bartlett, Chris is entrusted with the care of Bristol’s historic Juniper Hill Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark, where he helps preserve older speci-men trees. He also offers seasonal lectures on plant diagnostics, landscape history, and cultural trends with the arboricultural indus-try. Chris is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture. His 25 years of experience in tree care make Chris well versed in Bartlett’s scientific approach to tree care.

Make your home safer and more efficient. Since 1978, Airhart Electric, Inc. has been in the electrical business and has earned a reputation for superior quality and reliable service. We offer a full spectrum of electrical services for the residential and commercial customer.
This year’s theme of “Vintage Gardens” will incorporate clas-sic cars into the gardens and vignettes on the show floor. One of the vintage autos that will be showcased is the 1955 Buick Special Riviera.
Introduced in the middle of the 1955 model year, the four-door Buick Special Riviera (along with the Century Riviera, the Oldsmobile 98 Holiday and the 88 Holiday) were the first four-door pillarless hardtops ever produced. By then, the Buick Spe-cial was one of America’s best selling automotive series. This car can be found in the vintage car showcase on the fifth floor.

Another of the cars on display at the Flower Show will be this 1929 Ford Model A, known as Trixie. Trixie is a Roadster Deluxe with two pairs of spare shoes each located in the side fender wells. She’s been on quite a journey, and recently went to live with a new family who rebuilt her rear end, put new brakes on her, replaced the electrical, and finally got her back on the road again. You might see her around town, but not until the weather gets warmer – she doesn’t have heat or side curtains. This car can be found in the entry garden by Metamorphosis Design.
The 1913 Cadillac Model 30 five-passenger Phaeton was the second year that Cadillacs were equipped with the electric Del-co starter, which was a vast improvement. This one featured 40-50 horsepower in a 120-inch wheel base. The automobile shown here has undergone a restoration by local Cadillac en-thusiast Dick Shappy, and it is presently regarded as the finest 1913 model still in existence. This car can be found in the vintage car showcase on the fifth floor.

Tips and insights on our unique Rhode Island earthBy Chuck Carberry
I just want to share some insight on the forgotten factor in gar-dening: your soil. We here in Rhode Island have good and bad soils. Typically in the northern part of the state soils are rocky, sandy and low in nutrition. In the southern part of the state you are the benefactors of Glacial Till depositing all the good soil there. The soils there are loamy and free of stones and have good organic content. What are you to do if you live in the poor soil areas? Here are some hints.
Add organic compost: This black gold will return fertility to the soil in a balanced way without the leaching of nutrients into our ponds and water systems. The compost also brings in natural microorganisms that will improve conditions. The de-composed matter also helps with aeration.
Add lime to acidic soils: Our soils tend to be very acidic, a condition many plants cannot tolerate. Adding lime to the soil will bring up the PH and allow for improved plant growth. Be patient: it takes three to five years of applications to get to a desired level.
Mulch: Mulching soils keep moisture in when soil layers are thin. Mulch also helps by increasing the organic matter. Use a two-inch layer – using too much will hurt plant growth
Aeration: Turn your soil in beds each season. This helps with air pockets, a key factor in healthy plant growth. This will also help with growing your lawn.
Testing: Have your soils professionally tested. This is the first step in improving your conditions at home. You can bring a sam-ple to the URI Outreach Center and have it tested by their Master Gardeners. Call the URI Gardening hotline at 1-800-448-1011 or 401-874-4836; they open for the season in the first week of March.
