History of Portugal
• In the next two centuries, Portugal gradually lost much of its wealth
• Signs of military began with two disastrous battles: the Battle of Alcacer Quibir, Morocco in 1578 and Spain's abortive try to conquer England in 1588.
• From the middle of the 19th century to the late 1950s, two-million Portuguese left Europe to live in Brazil and the United States.
The Monarchy in Portugal
• In 1910, there was a revolution that deposed the monarchy
• The republic was unable to solve the country's problems.
• The new government instituted sweeping democratic reforms and granted independence to all of Portugal's African colonies in 1975.
Portugal in the Period of the Discoveries
• July 25, 1415 marked the beginning of the Portuguese Empire, when the Portuguese Armada departed to the rich trade Islamic Centre of Ceuta in North Africa with King John I.
• Between 1427 and 1431, most of the Azorean islands were discovered and these uninhabited islands were colonized by the Portuguese in 1445.
Portuguese Empire
• Was the first global empire in history.• The Muslim attempt to retake Ceuta was
ultimately unsuccessful and Ceuta remained the first part of the new Portuguese Empire.
• Soon it expanded the Portuguese Empire.• The Portuguese did not give up their
exploratory efforts. • In 1448, on a small island known as Arguim off
the coast of Mauritania, a castle was built.
