Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend! In April, 1968, 50 years ago, Spring had just arrived in New York City. On April 4th I had stayed late at school and was returning home to Harlem. As I was walking along 135th Street from the C Train I could hear the noise of elevated voices from the direction of 125th Street. I could see the lights of police cars collected together in the distance. Martin Luther King Jr had been killed that afternoon in Memphis and Harlem was erupting. !!Harlem was deep into the Civil Rights and Black Power movement in the 1960’s. Even young people could articulate the philosophy of Dr. King or the thinking of Malcolm X or quote from the Red Book with H. Rap Brown. Teenagers could identify the artistic achievements of Lorraine Hansberry, Amiri Baraka, Langston Hughes, Romare Bearden, Nina Simone, Myles Davis and Alvin Ailey. When Martin Luther King, Jr, was killed, Harlem was fully invested in the belief that “Change gonna come.”!!Even so this weekend, as we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King in 2018, we are very cognizant that African Americans and people of color generally in the United States suffer more illnesses, are more incarcerated, are less enfranchised, have lower college entrance rates and have shorter life spans than white Americans. Thus we need to be ready in 2018. If you are not engaged, then this would be the year to become engaged. If your kids are unaware of their history, then this would be the year for them to learn their roots. If you found yourself sleeping through the indignities, prejudice and racism of 2017, then now is really the time to “stay woke!”!
