Pre Construction Tests
• Dubai based Emirates Nortech conducts survey to test shape and volume both above and below the projected high and low waterlines.
• Dubai based Sorgreath Gulf created a 3D physical scale model of the crescent to perform exhaustive tests in laboratory using a 12m random wave generator.
![Page 10: The palm islands](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062315/55b7a569bb61eb5a798b4790/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• Massive island is being constructed out at sea, using only natural materials, sand and rock.
• Water causes erosion of sand and rock..
• To keep it in place, barge-loads of rubble are dropped on top of this.
• Sand found at 6 miles out at sea.
• Pumped through a pipe and sprayed into place at 10 mps. This process is called Rainbowing.

Breakwaters
Environmentalists - test the water every day to check that the system is working.
The return of algae and stagnant water is something they can't allow.
![Page 12: The palm islands](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062315/55b7a569bb61eb5a798b4790/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Vibrocompaction • Bam in Iran - 6.6. If epicentre Dubai will
lead to liquefaction
• As the sand compacts, it pushes the water between the particles upwards, making the ground liquefy.
• This shaft then vibrates, shaking the ground around it, the sand compacts and sinks, more sand is poured in until the area around the probes is rock solid.

Controversy
• Extended delays to the completion of the project.• After launching the project, Increase in number of residential units on
the island.• Miscalculating the actual cost of construction.• Doubts about the quality of the construction.• Environmental impact.
![Page 14: The palm islands](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022062315/55b7a569bb61eb5a798b4790/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Environmental Problems • Erosion, caused by winds and water
currents.• Due to the shape of the island right outside
the coast of Dubai, there is loss of coastal shape along the seashore of Dubai.
• Disturbances in the reproductive cycles of the species of fish
• Newly-born fish were not able to survive
• Damage to the marine ecology marine habitat, burying coral reefs, oyster beds and subterranean fields of sea grass
• Profound underwater changes- The typically crystalline waters of the gulf of Dubai have become severely clouded with silt
