The Good News
November
2013
Preaching through the Old
Testament this fall, I keep
returning to themes of
encounters with God, “God-
sightings” most often indirect, as
the people of Israel sense God’s
love through food in the
wilderness or individuals God’s
call through a voice in the night.
At the same time I’ve heard God
at work in your stories, of
profound caring, surprise, and
blessing
In scripture or contemporary
life, God-sightings are never
direct; the ancient writers
believed God’s face was too
bright for humans. We
Christians may see God through
other people, most specifically
through the person of Jesus
Christ. We see God in Christ
alive, especially when others do
the kinds of things God does,
sharing and receiving blessing.
God-sightings are not magic;
they may be simple experiences
of love, peace, comfort or call that
bring us out of ourselves yet have
deep impact.
This season of stewardship
and giving thanks, I’m interested
in your God-sightings,
particularly those made possible
by Nauraushaun’s ministry. You
may have received God’s love
through someone’s care for you
while you recuperated. You may
have been called to bless others
through Helping Hands or
Birthday People, realizing that
God was blessing you in the
process. Maybe you got to know
someone new and saw Christ’s
peace or love in them. Maybe
God helped you face a difficult
circumstance because of faith you
grew through church.
Maybe you’ve never asked
yourself this kind of question.
Maybe you never named a simple
act of kindness as a God-sighting.
As your pastor, I give thanks for
my own God-sightings. This
month and always, may you see
God in someone else, and may
someone else see Christ in you.
Peace of Christ be with you, Laura
2 The Good News
From the temporary Editor
Our prayers continue to go out to Barbara as she recovers, but as she is still
not able to edit the newsletter, I will do
my best to fill in.
Over the past few years I have felt that
the Holy Spirit has been serving as my
GPS and leading me on an ever deepening journey of faith which began
a long time ago, survived many detours
and rough roads, but, which lately, has reached a more direct, smoother surface.
I cannot remember a time when I did
not have faith in God, but my understanding of that faith was, at best,
rudimentary. As a youngster, I went to
church more because it was expected of me than because I felt called to do so. In
college and for many years after, I
drifted in and out of a formal church
community. I heard a lot of ‘recalculating’ during this time, but I still
always maintained my basic faith in
God. (For those who do not have a GPS system, when you go off course the
GPS voice starts saying ‘recalculating’
until you get back on the route it has laid
out for you.)
As I get older, however, I find that
there is less ‘recalculating’, that God feels I am ready to discover the purpose
for which he put me on this earth. My
journey is still very much one of
discovery, but God is providing the right people and circumstances to keep me on
His path.
Nauraushaun and its people, I feel, are
the next stop on that path.
Peace, Ann
