Mission Statement
We provide a superior secular and Judaic education
by challenging each of our students with innovative and
enriched learning opportunities in a warm, nurturing
community. We instill and foster Jewish identity and a
commitment to our local community and to Israel through
the integration of Jewish values, traditions, and the
Hebrew language. Our students graduate with the
academic skills and strength of character enabling them to
excel in higher education and to become responsible
citizens and future leaders.
May 22, 2011 Lag B’ Omer 5771 Dear Gerrard Berman Day School Families, Faculty, Staff, Friends, UJA-NNJ, and Supporters,
Today we embark on a new adventure—the First Annual Family Fun Day and Music Festival!
Today we celebrate the family, the heart and soul of the Jewish community: parents, children,
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who gather together at happy and sad occasions. To our
extended family, the UJA-NNJ, we have worked together so beautifully to enable our great Jewish
community to celebrate Lag B’ Omer at Blue Rill Day Camp.
We also celebrate the Gerrard Berman Day School, Solomon Schechter of North Jersey, a place for
Jewish children to attend a school where they learn a dual curriculum to become scholars and mensches.
They study both secular and Judaic subjects, they observe American holidays and they celebrate Jewish
holidays. They learn algebraic equations and they study Torah trope. They learn to be proud as
well-informed Americans in our great democracy and also study to become leaders in the Jewish
community.
To all our many dedicated teachers, staff, parents and volunteers, one needs only to look at the
shining eyes of the children at work and at play within our school to be assured that you are dedicated to
a cause that will enable us to thrive as a school community and as a holy people. You are dedicated to
ensuring that the Gerrard Berman Day School will be strong and endure for our children’s children.
We could not have put this fabulous program together without our wonderful volunteers: Tracy
Zur, Beth Berman Wechsler, Leah Matsil, Howie Greenberg, Lee Ann Beck, Shana Siegel, Karl Kaplan,
Natalie Terdiman, Cantor Barbra Lieberstein, Sarah Bierman, and the entire Family Fun Day Committee.
We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Amy Shafron, Development Consultant, for her indispensable help.
We also thank all of the supporters of the Gerrard Berman Day School for enabling this wonderful school
to give to the families of the community.
Now families….let’s have fun!!!
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt
Head of School
A Message from
Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt
Head of School
May 2011
Dear Gerrard Berman Day School Staff, Friends and Family,
Welcome to our first annual Family Fun Day and Music Festival! We are thrilled and
grateful to have UJA-NNJ as a co-sponsor of this wonderful day. UJA-NNJ has been
incredibly supportive of our school and our programming, and this event could not have
happened without them. I also want to thank Blue Rill Day Camp. They have been a
pleasure to work with every step of the way. I must give a special thank you and round of
applause to the wonderful GBDS volunteers and staff who have worked so hard to make
this a successful event, especially Tracy Zur, Beth Berman Wechsler, Leah Matsil, Howie
Greenberg, Lee Ann Beck, Amy Shafron and the entire Family Fun Day committee.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge all of you, our sponsors, friends and families, who are here
today. Everyone who enters the doors of GBDS comments on the special feeling of
community at our school. We truly are a family of which each of you is an important
member.
Of course, a school is only as good as its faculty and staff. The GBDS staff works
tirelessly to create a child-centered environment where each student is engaged through
experiential learning, superb academics, individualized attention, multi-disciplinary lessons,
Jewish values and social action. Our teachers and administrators do more than teach, they
advise, nurture and inspire. They are helping to turn our children into the Jewish leaders of
tomorrow. It is my honor and privilege to work with them.
On behalf of the school Board and on behalf of my family, I wish my sincerest
congratulations and thanks to everyone who made today possible and who supports our
school. The GBDS community continues to meet every challenge that faces us and grow
stronger every day. May we all go from strength to strength.
Very truly yours,
Shana Siegel

Learn to Listen with Solisten®
Barbara Eisenstein, MM, SQL (Solisten Qualified Licensee)
Solistentraining.com
Attention all business people, teachers, students, parents!
Please ask yourself “Am I just hearing or am I really listening to what others have
to say?” We are faced with endless choices and stimuli everyday, and multitasking
doesn’t always lead to positive results. I can help you improve your attention,
focus, listening and communication skills.
Learning to focus is essential to real listening and a better quality of life.
Dr. Alfred Tomatis, who did research in this area, understood that listening is re-
lated to social, cognitive, emotional and motor learning in children and adults.
Hearing is passive but listening is a complex process that is active and vol-
untary. The ear is much more than an organ of hearing. It’s involved with energiz-ing and regulating alertness of the brain, coordinating posture and movement, in-
cluding connecting our intentions and thoughts with our physical movements and verbal statements. Dr. Tomatis developed techniques and technologies to educate
and strengthen our ability to listen, commonly referred to as the “Tomatis Method”.
Who can be helped? Just about everyone, from prenatal care to toddlers
all the way to senior citizens; especially those concerned with attention, focus and ADHD, autism, career adults for better sales and presentations, college stu-
dents, anyone concerned with a competitive edge, reading problems, organization, learning a foreign language, stress, musical abilities, dyslexia, auditory processing
issues, senior adults, coordination, speech and auditory sensory processing. It’s like a tune-up for your brain.
Solisten®, the portable application of Tomatis sound training strengthens the ear and energizes the brain. It is the only portable, digital device that offers
true and original Tomatis® work. Solisten® programs work with emotion,
memory, attention and language.
People of all ages can imagine new possibilities. Let me help you realize
your potential today. Experience Solisten® for yourself and your family.
In honor of Lee Ann and Paul Beck and all the volunteers who have sacrificed countless hours to
benefit The Gerrard Berman Day School.
Your efforts serve as the structural foundation upon
which all else is built.
