GNLD continues to recognize thesignificance of the work of Dr. ArthurFurst and his dedication to the Universityof San Francisco. “GNLD is proud tosupport tomorrow’s research by recognizingtoday’s outstanding academic achievement,”proclaims John Miller, GNLD VicePresident of Science & Technology, andScientific Advisory Board (SAB) member.“Dr. Furst was a pioneer in toxicology andcancer research and we are honored tocontinue this recognition in his name.”

This year’s recipient is a mixture ofcharm, athleticism, health-consciousness,and academic achievement. UndergraduateElizabeth Noey is a perfect selection torepresent the embodiment of this award. As a cross-country and track and fieldcompetitor, Elizabeth was as anxious tojoin USF’s athletic department as she wasits esteemed Chemistry department. Shetrains each morning and recognizes thatsolid nutrition plays a key role in herperformance. “I respect that GNLDrepresents a company that understands the connection between what you put intoyour body and its overall performance.”

While her parents may not be science-oriented, Elizabeth’s Grandfather was ascientist in Secret City (Oak Ridge, TN)

during World War II and Elizabethwonders if some of her interest and abilitystem from his branch of the family tree.In April 2008, Elizabeth was given theopportunity to present her researchproject, “Designing Stable AromaticMobius Annulenes,” in New Orleans at the American Chemical Society’s NationalConference.

Whether she is describing events, “TheACS conference is sort of like an adultScience Fair, with different projects andstudies on display” or scientific terms,“Molecules can be bonded together insingle or double bonds. When every otherbond is a double bond, that’s an annulene,”Elizabeth has a knack for simplifyingcomplex concepts. This talent should serveher well if she decides to pursue her goalof becoming a professor.

For now, breaking her Personal Best inthe 5K and focusing on molecular stabilityseem to keep her busy. This scholarshiprepresents a bridge between the years atUSF previous to her attendance and theyears that will follow her. “I was honoredto receive this scholarship because I hadheard such great things from my professorsabout Dr. Furst and the ground-breakingwork he did.”
