Distinguished AlumnusThomas P. Riley ’56
Thomas P. Riley ’56 has Aquinas in his blood. Tom’s dad was president of the Aquinas Class of 1926, the first class to graduate from our Dewey Ave campus. Tom, too, was president of his class for all four years, as well as an outstanding athlete.
After Aquinas, Tom graduated from Princeton with honors. He went on to Cornell University for a Masters in Public Administration. Tom’s business career included management and executive positions as vice president of operations for Rochester Telephone and president and C.O.O. of Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
After retiring from “corporate” life, Tom consulted for Eastman Dental Center, City Newspaper and the High Falls development project, among
others. For more than a decade he has been an adjunct faculty member at the U of R’s medical school.
Despite a demanding business career, Tom always found time to give back to the community. He has held board and leadership positions with Unity Health, St. Ann’s Community and several other community organizations. He’s been appointed by the mayor twice to chair the City of Rochester Planning Commission.
Tom was a founding member of the Maplewood Neighborhood Association, which is among the most active in Rochester. Now that he lives in Charlotte, he’s been involved with the Charlotte Community Association, the Harbortown Merchants’ Association and is a founder of the Charlotte Community Development Corporation. He also chairs the finance council of the Cathedral Community Parish at Sacred Heart.
On a personal level, Tom takes great pride in his work in the development of young people. He served on boards for Sacred Heart School and the CYO. He was a founding member of the Monroe County Pop Warner Football League and coached the 10th Ward Tigers for several years.
Tom has always maintained a strong commitment and involvement with Aquinas. As a member of the Princeton Schools Committee, he has encouraged many AQ students to consider Princeton and has been gratified that several have enjoyed great success there. He continues to serve with other alumni doing mock job interviews with sophomores. But perhaps his most significant contribution came as he chaired the Class of 1956 50th Reunion. His class raised more than $300,000 to establish the Leadership/Character/Service Initiative at Aquinas. With significant contributions from classmates Joe Calihan and Dick Corbett, and with excellent overall class participation, the Class of 1956 set a new record for reunion class giving. They also challenged other classes to surpass their record, resulting in a whole new standard for alumni giving – thus making a truly lasting and significant contribution to the long-term vitality of Aquinas.
Tom takes special pride and satisfaction in the fact that this Class of ’56 gift was directed to Aquinas’ leadership program. Monies from this fund support programs aimed at helping Aquinas students develop values-based decision-making skills. Specific programs in leadership and community service are already in place. Aquinas alumni leaders are active in sharing their life experiences with students to help them become tomorrow’s leaders.

Commencement SpeakerLieutenant Colonel Alanna Parrinello-Cook ’88
Lieutenant Colonel Alanna Parrinello-Cook ’88 grew up in Greece, New York. While a student at Aquinas she participated in Student Council and Student Ministry. She lettered in Soccer, Swimming, and Track and Field and excelled in academics.
Alanna resolved to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point when she was a sophomore. Her determination and hard work paid off. In June 1988, only days after graduation from Aquinas, she began her military career as a Cadet at West Point. While at the Academy, she played Varsity Soccer, coxswained on the first Women’s Crew Team, and raced on the Downhill Ski Team. In 1992, Alanna graduated West Point with honors, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with a major in American History. She was commissioned
a Second Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps.
Throughout 18 years of commissioned service, Alanna has served in leadership positions from Platoon Leader to Company Commander and is a Battalion Commander selectee. She is scheduled to take command of the 68th Combat Service Support Battalion on January 2011 at Fort Carson, Colorado.
Her past assignments include the First Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington; Reserve and National Guard Training Support, Camp Shelby, Mississippi; Warrior Brigade and the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana; 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Fort Hood, Texas; and currently, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.
Alanna has deployed four times in support of the Global War on Terror. In 2002, she deployed with Task Force Warrior to Taszar, Hungary. In 2003 she deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom, stationed out of Al Taquaddam supporting the Coalition Forces in Al Anbar Province. She returned to Iraq for a second tour in 2006, this time stationed at Balad Air Base, serving as the G3 Chief of Operations, 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. She most recently served in Afghanistan, returning just this month, where she was the Support Operations Officer of the 43rd Sustainment Brigade, providing sustainment support to NATO forces in the southern and western regions of Afghanistan.
Lt. Col. Cook holds a Masters of Business Administration from Saint Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington and is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Lt. Col. Cook has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), the Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, and the Korean Defense Service Medal. Lt. Col. Cook has been awarded the Combat Action Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
Alanna married Steven Cook in 1994. Steve is a Lt. Col. (Promotable) hailing from Copperas Cove, Texas. They have three children, Alette (10), Scooter (8), and Duncan (3). Alanna and Steve have a cattle ranch in Lampasas, Texas and plan to retire there in the future. Alanna still has many friends and relatives in the Rochester area and visits as her military schedule allows.
Alanna is a member of the Fort Carson Catholic Church and prior to deployment taught CCE to 4th graders. She participates in numerous military spouse social forums and enjoys spending her free time with her family, cooking, and embroidering.

The Eastman Theatre is owned and operated by the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester.
Cameras will be permitted in the Eastman Theatre exclusively for the purpose of photographing graduating students.
Cameras and other photographic and/or video equipment must be handheld by guests at their seats. No photography or videography will be permitted in the aisles of the theatre. There can be no use of tripods or access to electrical outlets, except by a professional photographic service hired by the high school, and then, only by prior agreement with the Eastman Concert Office and Eastman Theatre Stage Manager. This is to avoid possible violation of fire safety regulations which stipulate that the aisles must be kept open at all times. Tripod legs also pose a potential safety hazard to patrons walking in the aisles.
At no time will photography be permitted on the stage itself, either by parents or by a professional photographic service.
Attendees may be asked to discontinue photographic activities if, in the opinion of the House Manager, they are disrupting the event.
In compliance with Monroe County Sanitary Code, Article VI, smoking is prohibited in all public areas of the Eastman School of Music, including but not limited to the Eastman Theatre, Kilbourn Hall, and all other performance spaces, restrooms, lounges and lobbies.
