PREFACE
During the past eighteen months, the Jewish community of theUnited States has lost by death an unusually large number of its mostactive leaders and public workers. Six of these men were figures ofsuch outstanding importance, that it has been deemed fitting to presentin the following pages brief biographical notices in memory of them. These six men, in the order of the dates of their death, were: Emil G.Hirsch, rabbi, orator, and educator, who died on January 7, 1923;Mayer Sulzberger, jurist, publicist, scholar, and communal leader, who died on April 20, 1923; Simon Wolf; lawyer, communal leader, former United States Consul, who died on June 4, 1923; Joseph Kraus-kopf, rabbi and communal leader, founder of the National Farm School, who died on June 12, 1923; Henry Berkowitz, rabbi, author, and initia-tor of the Jewish Chautauqua movement, who died on February 7,1924; and Benzion Halper, scholar, teacher, and editor for the JewishPublication Society, who died on March 21, 1924. Biographical sketchesof all but one of these men are given in this volume. Rabbi Louis L.Mann of Chicago, who, at a late hour, kindly agreed to write the ar-ticle on Emil G. Hirsch, unfortunately was not able to complete itin time for insertion in this volume.
Aside from the biographical notices, only one special article is givenin this issue, namely, "The Yiddish Press—An Americanizing Agency,"by Doctor Mordecai Soltes, Director of Extension Education of theBureau of Jewish Education, New York City. This article was writtenby Doctor Soltes as his doctorate thesis at Teachers College, ColumbiaUniversity, arid it was regarded as suitable for publication in theAMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK, because it gives a vivid and fascinatingpicture of the role of the Yiddish press in that process of the adjustmentof the immigrant to his new environment which has come to be called"Americanization." There has been considerable discussion, especiallyduring the past ten years, as to the desirability and usefulness of theforeign-language press in the United States; extremists have even urgedits abolition. But, as Doctor Soltes points out, this radical proposalwas made without any adequate examination of the facts about this
IV PREFACE
press, especially as to the nature of the civic attitudes assumed by itseditors and which help to mold the character of our adult citizens offoreign origin. Doctor Soltes' investigation, which is the first of itsscope in this field and may stimulate others to make similar studies, demonstrates that the Yiddish dailies are "American newspapers printedin Yiddish," and that this press "conceives its main editorial functionto be to interpret American events, ideals, and institutions to theirimmigrant Jewish readers."
The most significant tendencies and noteworthy events of the year5684 are presented in the form of a Survey of the year, which, like thesurvey in the two preceding volumes, was prepared by Doctor HarryS. Linfield, who is the compiler and editor of the monthly Summary ofEvents of Jewish Interest, issued by the Bureau of Jewish Social Re-search for the American Jewish Committee.
The recurrent features of the YEAR BOOK, the various directoriesand lists, have been carefully brought up to date, as has also been theimportant section on Statistics in which is included an abstract of theinteresting results of the recent Government census in Palestine.
In the Seventeenth Annual Report of the American Jewish Committeewhich is printed near the end of the volume, will be found statementson subjects of vital importance to the Jews of America such as the KuKlux Klan, the so-called "Jewish Vote," immigration and anti-Jewishpropoganda. The address of Mr. Simon Miller, President of the JewishPublication Society of America at its Thirty-Sixth Annual Meetingpublished in its reports will also be found of great interest.
Again I thank those who have cooperated with me in the compila-tion and issuance of this volume, number 26 of the series,—DoctorLinfield for his painstaking care in preparing the Survey of the Yearand the article on Statistics; Mr. I. George Dobsevage for revising proofsand his aid in technical directions; to Miss Rose A. Herzog, who helpedto prepare some of the manuscripts for printing and who read the proofsand to Mr. Moses Alperovich, in charge of the Jewish PublicationSociety's Press for the fine spirit of cooperation manifested by him.
The editor feels that he cannot adequately express his sense of lossand profound sorrow at the untimely death of Doctor Halper, the editor

of the Society, who during the past five years collaborated untiringlyand wholeheartedly with him in the preparation of the AMERICAN
JEWISH YEAR BOOK, and who, like the true teacher that he was, gaveunstintedly of the vast fund of knowledge and information of whichhe was the fortunate possessor.

5685is called 685 (n"B~in) according to the short system (p"Bb). It
is a perfect year of 12 months, 50 Sabbaths, 355 days,
beginning on Monday, the second day of the week, and
having the first day of Passover on Thursday, the fifth day
of the week; therefore its sign is ntP3, i. e., 3 for second, E> for
perfect (noW) and n for fifth. It is the fourth year of
the 300th lunar cycle of 19 years, and the first year of
the 204th solar cycle of 28 years, since Creation.
