You are cordially invited to attend the Veterans Annual Appreciation Dinner on Thursday, November 10th at 5pm, St Robert’s Parish Hall, 52 South Elm Street, Windsor Locks, as we pay tribute to our Windsor
Locks Veterans! A special presentation to the WWII Veterans is planned. This event gives our community the opportunity to show appreciation to all those who have served our country in times of war and in peace. As in past years we are asking veterans to bring photos and memorabilia to be displayed and shared that eve-ning. This elegant patriotic evening begins with cocktails and horsd’oeuvres, and once again enjoy a sit down dinner served by Heidi and her wait staff from Krause Caterers, followed by presentations to veterans and the
wonderful music by our favorite duo, Ritchie Mitnick and Pete Arnone! Windsor Locks Veterans Complimentary! General Public ~ $25 Seating is limited

Quick tip: A moist towel microwaved for 1-2 minutes
(test temperature before applying) works to reduce pain
and inflammation. Best Regards, John
Attention Retired Aetna Employees
Active or retired Aetna employees who perform vol-
untary service at the center, in any capacity, for at
least 35 hours per year can apply for a $300 grant
from the Aetna Foundation to benefit the center. In
addition, widows of retired Aetna employees who
were receiving Aetna pensions, can also apply for a
$300 grant. An important aspect of the Aetna grant
program is that every year is a “new ball game” that
is, each subsequent year of volunteer service quali-
fies for an additional $300 grant. Aetna has trans-
ferred it’s entire grant program to the Internet. For
help applying, see Lori and have your applicable
employee ID # available. If you do not have your ID
# we will call Aetna for that information.
Municipal Agent Notes By John Sullivan
Cold & Heat Therapy - What to Use and When
This information comes from Therapeutic Modalities in
Sports Medicine 4th Edition. William E. Prentice. You
may want to save it for future reference.
1. Cold Therapy is best used within the first 72 hours
in the event of an acute trauma or subacute injury.
It includes ice packs, ice massage, cold & ice whirl-
pools. By lowering the temperature in the injured
area, it decreases the production of metabolic heat-
thus reducing the amount of swelling, pain, or mus-
cle spasm. So cold therapy reduces additional dam-
age to the injured tissue resulting from the body’s
inflammatory response. Treatment times vary and
depend on several factors including the size of
treatment area, type of cold therapy and size of the
individual being treated. For example, a thin per-
son requires less treatment time because the cold
does not need to penetrate as much tissue to lower
the inner temperature. There are four stages of cold
therapy that assist in determining the appropriate
treatment time: 1.An uncomfortable feeling 2.
Stinging 3.Burning or aching, and finally 4. Numb-
ness. As it takes 5-15 minutes to reach all four
stages, treatment time should last a minimum of 15
minutes. Here is a quick tip: Mixing one cup of al-
cohol and two cups of water makes a good ice pack
because it freezes at a lower temperature but re-
mains slushy for good ice pack consistency.
2. Heat Therapy is recommended in subacute and
chronic conditions (such as arthritis) for reducing
pain and inflammation. The main reasons for heat
therapy are to increase tissue temperature which
increases blood flow and draws extra nutrients into
the injured area to assist in the recovery and heating
process. Because of this, heat should never be used
on an acute trauma or injury until the swelling is
controlled. Treatment time for heat is between 15
and 20 minutes. Just like with cold therapy, it takes
a minimum of 15 minutes for heat to penetrate tis-
sue so as to reach and raise inner temperatures.
Heat therapy applications include diathermy, ultra-
sound, warm whirlpool, infrared lamps, and chemi-
cally activated heat pads.
If you’re unsure whether to use cold or heat, the
recommendation is to consult a clinician who will
evaluate and apply the appropriate therapy, thus
increasing your chances of a quicker and less
stressful recovery.
Senior Citizens Club Club Social will be held on Friday, November 4th.
Doors open at 5pm. Thank you! Betty Ellis
