TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 21, 2018
Last Sunday we heard in Mark’s Gospel what it takes to be a follower of Jesus. This week we hear about what it means to live out that calling. The Lord invites us to share in His life and to share in His suffering so that our world can be redeemed.
The message of Jesus is very clear: “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus offered His life to God for the human race. We are called to live in the same way. The death of Jesus was a perfect sacrifice to the Father on our behalf. Sacrifice does not just mean giving up something but rather living for a purpose. To sacrifice your life to God means to make your life holy by living for God and doing some definite service in this world for others.
Service does not just include what we might call ‘Christian Service’: collecting food for the poor; visiting the elderly; helping needy families etc. These are good and wonderful acts of kindness, works of charity. Such actions free us from our sins and make us pleasing to God. I am talking more about our whole purpose of life, that is, to live for God and to do some definitive service with our life.
This week, on October 18, the Church gives us a great example of this in the anniversary of the canonization of Louis and Zélie Martin, the parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower. They are the only spouses in history to be canonized in the same ceremony. Their feast day is July 13th, the day of their wedding anniversary. We know of Thérèse’s great love for Jesus and her desire to do all the little things we do every day intentionally out of love of God. Her parents Zélie and Louis did everything motivated by Christ’s love and kept Christ at the center of their family life as they experienced many challenges, struggles, and failures. This is what makes them so great. Louis and Zélie show their greatness in their loving, in loving each other, and in loving their children.
“Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” (Mark 10:43-44)
Deacon Dan

From the Sidewalks of Austin - Roger spoke with a young woman in front of an Austin Abortion Center Thursday. When he told her she didn't have to go through with it and that we could help, she burst into tears and went inside. 15 minutes later she came outside and walked over to Roger and Mike with a big smile saying she was going to keep her baby and “thank you” for the resources! Praise be to God!! Be His witness. Sign up to pray just 1 hour each week at:centraltexascoalition.com/40-days-of-life-2/
