Nutrition Notes By Shannon Davis, RD
Vitamins
Have you ever wondered if you should be
taking a vitamin supplement or not? Before
deciding you should look closely at your diet.
If you are generally consuming a diet rich in
fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and
moderate in fats and sugars, you are most
likely able to meet your dietary needs through
diet alone. However, sometimes a disease
process makes it more difficult to eat a varied
diet. Discussing vitamin supplementation with
your health care provider may be a good idea.
If you decide a supplement is in your
best interest, be careful which one you choose.
Sticking to a supplement that contains no more
than 100% of the Daily Values is a safe
practice. A balanced vitamin is important
because certain vitamins and minerals can
compete with each other. For example, excessive
Vitamin C intake can cause an over absorption
of iron. It may also inhibit copper
absorption. Large amounts of fish oils may
decrease blood clotting. This is another
reason why it is always a good idea to mention
any over the counter products you may be taking
to your doctor.
Even though it may seem that the more
vitamins, the better, that is not always the
case. Excessive intake of Vitamin A can cause
a toxicity. Since Vitamin A is fat-soluble,
excess amounts re not easily passed out through
the urine, as the B Vitamins are.
Vitamin A instead could build up in your
tissues, causing long term health problems.
Certain supplements may also interact
with prescription medications as well. This is
another reason why it is so imperative that you
tell your doctor all supplements that you may
be using. Of course, it is optimal to obtain
all your vitamin and mineral needs through a
healthy diet. But when that is not feasible
and when used properly, vitamin and mineral
supplements are a good way to ensure you are
meeting your nutritional needs.
