66th ANNUAL CHATHAM KIWANIS MUSIC FESTIVAL
April 4-15, 2011
The Festival Committee wishes to express its gratitude to all stu-dents, parents and teachers who continue to support the Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival. The generous financial contributions to awards make it possible to recognize the hard work of many stu-dents. A donation to Friends of the Festival provides funding for adju-dicator fees and venue rental as well as other operational expenses. This financial support is necessary to maintain this musical experi-
ence for the youth in our community. We offer sincere thanks to all donors. A contribution to the Awards Fund or Friends of the Festival is receiptable for Income Tax purposes. Volunteers are the backbone of the festival. Without them the festival would not function. The committee wishes to thank all of those faith-
ful individuals who contribute their time to this worthy annual event.

GENERAL RULES It is the teacher’s, parents’, and student’s responsibility
to read and follow these rules. Working Management:
1. The competitions shall be under the working management of the General Executive, the Syllabus and Program Committee, all of which is hereinafter called “The Committee”. Any questions not dealt with in these rules shall be referred to the Committee, whose decisions on such matters shall be final and binding on all concerned.
Eligibility-Definitions: 2. All competitions, unless otherwise stated, shall be open to amateurs
only. For the purpose of these competitions, an amateur shall be defined as follows: An Amateur is a music student or any person whose principal means of livelihood is not and never was obtained from the performance or teaching of music, even though from time to time such persons are in receipt of remunerations for musical ser-vices rendered. Music students who teach for the purpose of applying the money so earned to the furtherance of their musical education will be classed as amateurs.
3. Where age limits are specified, competitors must be of the prescribed
age on the 1st day of January in the year of the Festival to be en-
tered. Competitors must state on the entry form the grade of music
they are presently studying. STUDENTS MUST ENTER ALL CLASSES
WITHIN A DISCIPLINE AT THE SAME GRADE LEVEL.
4. Competitors must not use a selection with which they have previ-ously won a first standing.
5. A competitor may perform only once in a class.
Test Pieces 6. Test pieces 2008 must be chosen from the following syllabi:
Piano- RCM, CC 1999 revised edition, contemporary showcase sylla-bus Voice - RCM 2005, CC 1999 Strings-RCM Cello 2007, RCM Violin 2006, CC Violin 2001 Entry forms indicating outdated syllabi listings will be returned.
7. Competitors in all classes must be prepared to furnish a purchased score of the test piece for the use of the adjudicator. No music scores are supplied by the adjudicator except for Sight Reading classes. The purchased score must be presented to the Desk Secretary immedi-ately preceding the respective competition and claimed immediately after the class. The accompanist must also use a purchased score in the same arrangement received by the adjudicator.
8. Photocopied material is allowed ONLY when written authorization from the copyright owner is presented to the adjudicator. Failure to comply with all of the above shall render the competitor to adjudica-tion only with no mark given.
16
9. OWN CHOICE CLASSES: A test piece may not be used in more than one class. Test pieces prescribed by the Festival Committee (listed in this syllabus) may not be used for OWN CHOICE classes. The title, timing, and composer must be specified on the entry form. The suit-ability of the selection for the age and grade of the competitor will be considered by the adjudicator in the evaluation of the performance.
Entries 10. The entry fee will not, under any circumstances, be refunded. Incom-
plete entry forms will be returned. In the event that entries in any specific discipline are insufficient to warrant hiring a special adjudica-tor, the Committee reserves the right to cancel classes and refund entry fees. Classes also may be added to accommodate entries. The deadline to add classes is Nov. 15, 2009.
Program Procedure 11. The Committee reserves the right to split any classes into two or
three groups of approximately equal numbers. Certificates will be issued for each group as a separate class.
12. A letter will be forwarded to each competitor or teacher informing them of the time, date, and location of each class entered.
13. Scheduling conflicts must be dealt with by March 23/11. All requests for changes must be received in writing
(email [email protected]) 14. The Committee reserves the right to disqualify any competitor who is
not ready to compete within five minutes of being called. 15. If competitors do not perform the test piece as entered on their entry
form, they will receive adjudication only, and no mark. 16. Memorization: Solo performers must memorize selections as in-
structed in Conservatory Syllabi. Bands, String Ensembles and cer-tain other instrumental classes need not memorize. Solo performers who refer to music during the performance of a test piece which should be memorized will not be eligible for first place.
17. The Festival auditorium or Festival instruments must not be used other than for competition.
18. Competitors requiring music stands must supply their own. 19. In order to ensure impartiality, at no time should any competitor,
parent, or teacher approach the adjudicator. Necessary questions from a competitor must be directed to the Desk Secretary. Breaches of this rule may result in the competitor’s disqualification.
20. Coaching during performance from teachers, parents, or others in the audience is prohibited and may result in the competitor’s disqualifica-tion.
21. All cameras are prohibited. They are distracting to competitors. It is unlawful to record by picture and/or sound anyone in performance. It violates CRTC and copyright regulations. Please use common cour-tesy.
Rules and Regulations Specific to Awards 22. A minimum standing of 80, 75, and 70 must be obtained for first,
second or third class awards respectively. Trophies, plaques and cash
awards are given to competitors, who, in the opinion of the
17
adjudicators show the most promise of future development musically and are not necessarily awarded to the winners of first, second or third place. To be eligible for an award, plaque or trophy, a competi-tor must have competed in two Solo classes of the same discipline and obtained a minimum mark of 80 in each class. Studies and Sight Reading classes are not eligible for cash award consideration. See specific rules for each discipline.
23. Award cheques are VOID after 30 days. 24. Adjudicators will not “tie” for first place. 25. All shields, plaques and trophies are the property of the Music Festi-
val and unless otherwise stipulated, shall be held by the winner until February 28th of the following year, and then returned to the Kiwanis Club of Chatham.
Final Concert 26. A group of contestants recommended by the adjudicators will be
called upon to perform at the Grand Concert. 27. The Golden K Kiwanis Bowl, the Silver Tray, and Kiwanis Bowl will be
presented at the Grand Concert. The winners are expected to per-form at the concert. TUESDAY APRIL 26, 2011
Complaints and Protests
28. Complaints or protests must be made in writing to the Resolution
Committee through the Festival Chairman. A fee equivalent to the amount of the entry fee of the class protested must accompany the letter. If the protest is sustained, the fee will be refunded.
29. The adjudicator’s decision is final in issues related to adjudicator’s decisions.
Ontario Provincial Festival Information
• Up to two students, grade 7 and above from each discipline may be
recommended by the adjudicators to compete in the Ontario Provin-cial Festival
• To receive an adjudicator’s recommendation, a minimum mark of 85
must be achieved. The potential of the student to benefit from the experience is also a consideration. The Chatham Kiwanis Music Festi-val prefers that the student has entered more than one class in the discipline to receive a recommendation, however this is not a rule of the Ontario Provincial Festival.
• While it is an honour to receive a recommendation to the Ontario
Provincial Festival, it is not to be perceived as an award from the Chatham Kiwanis Music Festival. For more information, visit www.omfa.info.
• In deciding the grade level, a competitor must not have passed Con-
servatory Examinations at that level or higher before Dec 31st prior to the Provincial Festival and must not have entered more than two pieces above that grade level in any local Festival in the competition year. Competitors who enter local festivals performing more than two selections above their listed grade will be considered as working at that higher grade, and therefore must compete in the graded compe-tition at the higher grade level.

SUSAN AMBROSE
VOCAL Susan Ambrose was born in Woodstock, Ontario. After starting her studies in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Western Ontario, her voice was discovered in a performance with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society on campus, whereupon she changed studies and graduated from the Faculty of Music. She spent the following 14 years in Europe, first obtaining a graduate diploma
from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She then continued her studies with some of Europe’s greatest teachers/artists including Otakar Kraus, Walter Grüner, Madame Vera Rosza and Hans Hotter. A year at the London Opera Studio in England led to roles at Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera Touring, English National Opera and Covent Garden Royal Opera House. She won scholarships and awards from Friends of Covent Garden, Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust, the Kirsten Flagstaff Memorial Fund, and Munich Festival Scholarship. She later joined the Faculty of Music, University of Western Ontario, where she established her teaching studio, and directed the Opera Performance Program. In addition, she was featured in recitals and concerts. Susan now enjoys her life in Oakville where she teaches singing, adjudicates music festivals, examines for the Royal Conservatory of Music, and paints in watercolour and oil. She is currently compiling the new 2012 Vocal Syllabus and Song Books for the Royal Conservatory of Music.

BANDS AND INSTRUMENTAL
KEVIN MASTERSON
Kevin's inspiration and love for the trumpet can be traced to the first time he heard, as a boy, the renowned big band leader Harry James. From then on the trumpet became a major part of Kevin's life. He played for twenty five years with the Lancaster band and the Naval Reserve band, as well as freelancing with many other prominent musicians. Kevin taught at Essex District High School for thirty four years where he inaugurated a very successful group called the 19'S. Now that he is retired he continues to play regularly with the Silver Ambassadors, the Greater Windsor Concert Band, directs the Nil-A-Nova 15 piece dance band and he performs whenever/wherever an opportu-nity presents itself. In addition he has just completed playing 50 years with the Windsor Light Opera Orchestra.
GIL GROSSUTTI
Gil has fond memories of the Kiwanis Music Festival, both in the 1950's when he competed on the alto saxophone and the clarinet in Windsor, and in the 1960's and 1970's when his stage and concert bands from Assumption High School competed in Windsor and Toronto. More recently, he has adjudicated at some festivals in Windsor and Essex county, happy to encourage young musicians and share his expertise. Gil feels blessed that he has been able to make music is whole career, play-ing, conducting and teaching. Starting out, he played in the band at the Elm-wood Casino in Windsor, where he backed singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sammy Davis Jr. For twenty five years he conducted the Windsor Light Opera Orchestra, and had his own light jazz quartet in The Rib Room at TBQ's Other Place. Throughout his working life, he taught high school, at Assumption, and then at the Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts. In semi-retirement, he continues to tutor a few private students, and to play occasionally in bands, including the ethnic Italian Mazzenga Band, Kevin Masterson's Nil-A-Nova Band, and Gemini, under Brian White.
