VISION STATEMENT
Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where
all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.
At the start of Term 3 we will be having an external review of Special Character at our College. Any review of this nature is asking the question, “What is a Catholic School?”, and then seeing how well we measure up. One of my favourite quotes referring to the nature of a Catholic school comes from Pope Benedict. He said, “First and foremost it must be place where its members encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth.” (Benedict XV1. 2008).
It is such a powerful challenging statement. Our College needs to be a place where students and staff encounter God. Not distant God, but one who is present in all that we do and say. It challenges all of us to reveal God to each other so that when we work with students, parents or staff, they will encounter transforming love and truth. That is asking a lot of us.
How we talk, teach, relate, support and care for every student provides a glimpse of God to them. What does it say of God if they encounter teachers who give up on them too readily, or teachers who radiate negativity towards students and/or their work as educators? I must say that I don‟t think we have teachers like that, but it does show what is expected of us as educators in a Catholic school. My impression of our teachers and our support staff is that they explore every possibility to enable students to find successful outcomes at school and they radiate hope and happiness even when they are feeling otherwise.
Going the extra mile does tax our staff and we have had a few getting sick in these last two weeks of school as we wind up with parent-teacher meetings, school trips, a sports exchange, report writing, Challenge Week, University visits, the school ball, assessments due, and we also did some teaching and learning every day. The holidays will provide a well-deserved break for them.
Dr Oakley will be leaving us at the end of this term, having been with us for 2 ½ years teaching in the Science area. His knowledge of his students, his prowess with technology and his interest in students‟ welfare are qualities we strongly desire in the teaching profession. We will be making adjustments to our timetable and the hours of our part-time teachers, to ensure Dr Oakley‟s classes can continue learning without interruption next term.
Last Saturday we tried to get rid of the trees that we had felled two weeks earlier. What was notable this time was that we had fewer people available to help us. Saturday is obviously a busy day for families, with
many parents working and children involved in sport. But we kept going through the rain, wind and little bits of sunshine throughout the day.
My thanks to Mr Alex Li and his daughter Molly, Mr Stuart Linford, Mr Greg Mutton, Mr Mark Going, Mr Tim Mulcare, and my tolerant wife Sveta, for their help in turning almost all of the trees into woodchip. The last part will be completed this week by College staff which will then enable us to embark on the planting of new trees along that boundary.

SCHOOL MAGAZINE
We are now taking orders for this year's school magazine and will be using the on-line ordering system again.
The magazines will be printed by local company, Jeff Oliver Print. By printing locally we are supporting our community businesses, and it also means we get the magazines delivered earlier in Term 4, with the aim of distributing them before our senior students go on study leave for their NCEA exams.
The cost of the magazine is $20.00. Any family that wishes to purchase a magazine will need to pre-order one by clicking on the following link for further information and the ordering page:

Advertising: We will be offering advertising space again this year. Our fee is $150.00 for a full page advert, $80.00 for a half page advert, or $40.00 for a quarter page advert.

NZQA FEES REMINDER
Payment of NZQA fees is due at the College office by Friday 11 August, so mark this date on your calendar.
This year the cost is $76.70, which has now been added to your school account. Please note that if you have a regular automatic payment coming to the school for your account, payments are not usually allocated to this charge unless we receive specific instructions from parents to do so. If you would like to discuss this, please contact Jane in Reception.
Payments after the due date must be made direct to NZQA and incur a $50.00 late payment fee!
Families who have a community services card are eligible for financial assistance with exam fees. Please contact Jane in the College office for a form before Friday 11 August.

On Friday 30th June we hosted Tikipunga‟s Number One
Netball, Football and Rugby teams. We had some hard games and this year we were beaten 2 - 1, so they have taken the trophy with them! Results:

LUCKY DRAW WINNER
The Sport Co-ordinator offered a $50 gift card (for either BP, Pak „n Save or Sportsmans Choice), to any family who had their sports fees paid by the stated due date on our winter sports code newsletters.
So anyone who played for a Pompallier Basketball, Football, Hockey or Netball team was eligible with this criteria.

COMMUNICATION WITH COACHES AND TEAM MANAGERS REGARDING TRAINING & GAMES
Recently there have been a regular number of players NOT attending training or games – without notifying the team management of this. Unfortunately this can sometimes place the team in the position of having to default, or play with insufficient players – which we would all like to avoid.
Players are reminded that if you know you are unavailable for a game then you must communicate this to the Coach or Manager. Please show respect to these people who are giving their valuable time to you!
Simply not arriving for the game or training from week to week is not acceptable.
Remember you all read and agreed to your sport Code of Conduct when you joined the team – there is a small excerpt of this below:
Co-operate with your Captain, Coach, teammates and opponents, for without them you would not have a game.
Training times are set down by the Coaches of the respective teams and all players must be prompt. If, for any reason you are unable to attend a training session, the player must notify the Coach at least one day prior to that particular training session.
MARCELLIN COLLEGE SPORTS EXCHANGE
Our College will be travelling to Royal Oak in Auckland for this year‟s exchange, which, due to a change in the host schools‟ calendar, means we are looking at a new date in Week 5 next term. This will be confirmed asap.

What is expected of you:
1 As a member of these teams this season your participation is compulsory, unless you are injured or ill on the day. Final Football squads will be confirmed in Week 2 of Term 3.
2 Depart in clean tidy school uniform – we are representing the College!
3 Play a good fair game and respect your opposition and officials.
4 All school sports fees must have been paid and travel fee of $30.00 must be paid to College reception by Monday 7 August please.
5 All sports teams are provided with uniform, please bring own footwear/socks, protective gear, drink and lunch.
6 There will be a short welcome. We will respond with MO MARIA, and the College haka. Please show the appropriate spirit when participating in the welcome.
You MUST be at school by 8.00am SHARP on the day to ensure we get there on time. We will be departing Auckland by 2.30pm to return home, which we anticipate will be approximately 5.30pm.
All students need to arrange to be collected from school at this time, unless you have your own car.
All players involved have been given a copy of this note at school.
LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES - TERM 3
Next term the Year 12‟s in our Sport Committee will be offering a sports game each Tuesday and Thursday in the gym at lunchtime.
Hopefully the regular day of the games being run will help everyone to get into the routine – and if you wish to join in you just need to come along!
WHANGAREI AQUATIC CENTRE BOOT CAMP CLASS
Classes will consist of CrossFit-like training for one hour at the facility in Ewing Road, Riverside.
Cost is $8.50 per class, or pay for four classes costing $28.00 and students will have access to the pool afterward. Participants that choose to buy the concession card will also go in the draw to win a 1 month free pool membership.

We have collated results from common assessment tasks for our Year 9 and Year 10 students. This has enabled us to identify students who attained the top twenty outcomes based on Grade Point Average (GPA).
Under GPA, students receive 4 points for Excellence, 3 for Merit and 2 for Achieved. This is then converted to a percentage. As some students shared the same GPA, the student numbers are greater than 20.

ATTENDANCE DUES SPONSORSHIP
The Attendance Dues Sponsorship Scheme has been created to assist families who may need financial support with the payment of Attendance Dues, for students attending Catholic schools in Auckland Diocese, both primary and secondary.
The purpose of the sponsorship scheme is to allow parents or caregivers facing financial hardship another option to seek relief where they may be reluctant to approach their school for help.
The existing financial hardship scheme – operated by your school – is also available to parents or caregivers facing hardship and we do encourage families facing financial difficulties to please contact your school office.
Application forms are available from school and parish offices, or can be downloaded from the Catholic Schools Office website: www.catholicschools.org.nz (go to Property and Finance / Finance / Attendance Dues).
If you have any queries or require assistance with the payment of Attendance Dues under the sponsorship scheme, you are invited to phone in confidence, Carol Krebs (Ph. 09 360 3069) at the Auckland Diocese office.
Applications to the sponsorship scheme for 2017 Attendance Dues will be accepted by the Auckland Common Fund Ltd up to November 2017.
