The Travis County Sheriff’s Office has promoted National Night Out forthepast25years.Ourparticipationhasgrownfromhelpingwithahandfulofneighborhoodget-togetherstomorethan4,000participantsenjoying block parties, carnivals, parades and an assortment ofotheractivities.Ourinvolvementhasgrownfromacoupleofcrimeprevention officers, to dozens of patrol officers, sergeants, lieutenants, captains,majors,countycommissionersandtheSheriff.

first Tuesday of August. This year it will take place on October 7, 2008.NationalNightOutissponsoredbytheNationalNightOutAssociation ofTownWatch.This past year’s National Night Outcampaignsinvolvedcitizens,lawenforcementagencies,civicgroups,business, neighborhood organizations and local public officials from more than 9,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories,Canadiancitiesandmilitarybasesworldwide.Inall,morethan29.5millionparticipatedinNationalNightOutlastyear.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drugpreventionawareness,generatesupportforandparticipationinlocalanti-crime efforts, and to strengthen neighborhood spirit and lawenforcement – community partnership. But its primary goal is tosendastrongmessagetocriminalstoletthemknowneighborhoodsare organized and fighting back.
