The picture on the left shows a Centre Lathe which is used for turning metals
The main parts are as shown
Cross Slide
Saddle wheel
Compound Slide
First of all fix the bar in the chuck with the Chuck key.
Turning a Taper
Now rotate the Compound slide to the desired angle.

Next Lower the Guard into position.

Move the Tool closer to the workpiece with the Saddle wheel.

Switch the Lathe On

Use the Compound Slide to take the first small cut off the bar

Use the Compound Slide to take the first small cut off the bar (about 1mm)

Then wind the Compound Slide back

Move the Cross slide in to take a second cut.

Use the Compound slide to take a second cut.
Turning a Taper
Repeat this process until the desired taper is achieved
(Remember to take a light cut with each pass of the tool tip)

Switch the lathe Off .

Lift the Safety Guard.

Remove the workpiece.
