ELLA NELSON - ATHLETICS
There was one Australian athlete who stole the hearts of Australians at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Ella Nelson, a Sutherland Shire local grew up idolising Melinda Gainsford-Taylor.
Despite an injury-interrupted preparation heading into Rio, Nelson took it to the biggest names in international athletics, placing second in her 200m heat, and third in a fast semi-final. Nelson missed the final by just 0.01sec despite recording a personal-best time in the pen-ultimate round.
In the 12 months leading into Rio, Nelson bettered her previous best mark by 0.53sec following a two-month stint at the renowned ALTIS elite athletics program in Arizona in late-2015. At just 22 years of age, Ella has proven she is a world class athlete. She will have the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London and the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast to consolidate her exceptional performance in Rio, with the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games a longer term ambition for Australia’s newly-crowned speed queen.

At the end of the 2013 ANZ Championship season, Gerrard announced a code switch to Womens Rugby 7s, with the goal of becoming a dual international. Motherhood put a temporary hold on that plan when in 2014, Mo’onia became a first-time Mum to baby Francis. She has since resumed full-time training. Gerrard is enormously proud of her Tongan heritage - her own mother a decorated sprinter from the Pacific Games. Gerrard regularly travels to her native Tonga to deliver clinics and mentor female youth from the Polynesian nation.

STEVE HOOKER
STEVE HOOKER - POLE VAULT (RETIRED)/ MEDIA COMMENTATOR
As a gold medallist at all five major world athletics titles; Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Indoor Championships and IAAF Continental Cup, retired Australian pole vaulter Steve Hooker can rightfully be considered Australia’s greatest ever field athlete.
One of the stars of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Hooker became the first Australian field athlete to win Olympic gold in 60 years, the first Australian male track or field gold medallist since 1968, and the first Australian athletics Olympic champion since Cathy Freeman in 2000. Hooker’s win in Beijing was also the first for an Australian in that event.
Since retiring from the sport, Hooker has become an in-demand media commentator, AOC Athletes’ Commission Member, and an official AOC Athlete Mentor.
MATTHEW MITCHAM - DIVING (RETIRED)/ MEDIA COMMENTATOR/ ENTERTAINER
Matthew Mitcham recorded the single-highest scoring dive in Olympic history when he produced a scintillating final effort at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Four perfect 10s from the judging panel catapulted Mitcham from the silver medal position at the penultimate round into first, defeating China’s gold medal favourite, Zhou Luxin. It is undoubtedly one of the grittiest and most memorable victories in Olympic history. In recognition of his inspirational feat, that same year Mitcham was awarded Australia’s Sports Performer of the Year. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Mitcham won four silver medals, going one better in Glasgow four years later with a gold and three silver. Away from the water, Mitcham is an outstanding media talent; he is an accomplished cabaret performer, and an advocate and spokesperon for diversity and equality in the human spirit.

CHRISTIAN SPRENGER - SWIMMING (RETIRED)
Christian Sprenger is a two-time world record holder, Olympic medallist and World Champion.
It was the 2009 FINA World Championships where Sprenger really made his mark, setting a new World Record for the 200m breaststroke in a spectacular semi-final swim. He went on to claim bronze in the final, missing gold by just 0.1sec.
At the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, Sprenger took silver in the 100m, bronze in the 200m and gold, swimming the breaststroke leg of the 4x100m medley relay. Sprenger added a silver (100m) and bronze (medley relay) to his tally in London at the 2012 Olympic Games.
His world title came in Shanghai at the 2013 FINA World Championships where he bagged gold in the 100m breaststroke.
Christian Sprenger is now retired from professional swimming.

GEOFF HUEGILL
GEOFF HUEGILL - SWIMMING (RETIRED)
Geoff “Skippy” Huegill was a mainstay of the Australian swim team through the early 2000s. From his home Olympics he took bronze in the 100m butterfly and silver in the 4x100m medley relay. His 50m butterfly world record remained his own from 2000 to 2003.
Huegill retired from the pool following the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, but announced a comeback in 2008. Huegill’s form in the water continued to build at a rate surpassed only by his physical transformation. His hard work culminated in two gold medals at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. In a Commonwealth Games record and 10-year personal best, Huegill won gold in the 100m butterfly and gold in the 4x100m medley relay. He was narrowly beaten in the 50m butterfly to take silver.
Huegill is now retired from professional swimming, but has a number of ongoing commercial endeavours outside the pool.

32CASE STUDY: BRANDS
Qantas “QF 2012” Olympic Games Activation Program
GoalIn October 2011, The Sports Group was approached by Qantas in conjunction with their brand activtion agency ‘Wonder’, to build a multi-platform, athlete-led activation program to leverage the position of Qantas as the Official Airline of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and the Australian Olympic team.
BriefThe scope involved the creation of significant and bespoke public events for select athlete ambassadors with a focus on grass roots sport participation. Our client also wanted to highlight the aspirational qualities of these Olympic athletes.
SolutionThrough negotiation with Qantas and Wonder, The Sports Group clients Steve Hooker (Pole Vault), Leisel Jones (Swimming) and Lauren Mitchell (Gymnastics) were selected as members of the QF 2012 athlete team. All three public events were part of an integrated and broader activation campaign that involved launch activity, in-airport activations, safety video recordings and a range of content and social media driven initiatives. In the case of Leisel Jones (‘Swim with Leisel Jones’ at Bondi Beach) and Lauren Mitchell (‘Gymbus’ Activation and Gymnastics Demonstration in Kings Park, Perth), major public events were staged, enouraging hundreds of young (and young at heart Australians) to interact with these great champions and the Qantas Olympic sponsorship message.

James Magnussen - FOXTEL / Visit Britain
GoalFOXTEL, the official Pay Television broadcaster for the London 2012 Olympic Games had entered into a unique marketing, public relations and content partnership with Visit Britain - the national tourism agency responsible for marketing Britain worldwide and developing Britain’s visitor economy.
BriefThe partnership was borne so as to integrate UK themed content into FOXTEL’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games, utilising an identified high profile Olympic athlete medal prospect.
SolutionThrough negotiation with FOXTEL and Visit Britain, The Sports Group secured client James Magnussen as the high profile athlete talent and medal prospect for this campaign, and facilitated a three-day visit to the city of London. James Magnussen was accompanied by Matt Shirvington, host and presenter for FOXTELs Olympic Games coverage. Magnussen and his coach Brant Best were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Olympic Aquatic Centre. The campaign resulted in significant media coverage in both the UK and in Australia, satisfying the key objectives of Visit Britain and FOXTEL. There was further traction garnered through social media. For James Magnussen, the campaign was successful in positioning him as a world champion swimmer of international profile.
