Young seems to be the themefor Seneca High School sportsteams this season. This year thevarsity softball team has onlyfour seniors and is trying to buildup the team of five juniors, twosophomores and one freshman.
We have a great bunch ofgirls, Coach Marty Devino said.We lost a couple pitchers be-cause of arm injuries.
One of the most important as-pects of a softball team is thepitcher. Seneca varsity softballhas lost some pitchers to injury, and their pitchers are young. The
girls are working and learning tobecome stronger offensively.
Were young, our pitchers areyoung, Coach Devino said. Insoftball its important to havestrong pitchers. We are not over-powering offensively, we are los-ing a lot of games in the last in-
ning, which isnt good. We rely ondefense and defense breaks downsometimes.
The varsity team will graduatefour seniors this year.
Two of the seniors, ChristinaSuffrin and Lynette Moody, madeAll Conference last year and willbe a significant loss to the team.
Two of our seniors made allconference last year and are grad-uating this year, Devino said.Losing them is something thatcould potentially hurt us.
Although the Seneca varsitysoftball team is young, has re-building to do and is working toimprove its record, Devino is con-fident he has the right girls for
the job. He knows the team looksat each other as family and is re-ally happy to be a part of theteam.
The girls just want to behere, Devino said. At Seneca wepride ourselves in having thatfamily unity.

Construction has begun on thenew EMS building on New Rd. be-hind Nixons General Store, andwith the new building come sev-eral new benefits.
The existing building is notable to expand and meet OSHArequirements and cannot providethe space for several new features
that will be in the new building,
officials said.The existing Rescue Squad
building is located across thestreet from the Fire House and isunable to be expanded to meet theneeds of the squad due to thePinelands standards and the un-dersized lot it is located on,Mayor Kim Brown said. The ex-isting building is unable to meetOSHA standards concerning ashower for decontamination of
personnel. There is also no space
for a separate washer and dryerfor decontaminating equipment.Volunteers have been decontami-nating themselves and equipmentat their homes.
The new building would alsobe more centrally located andable to provide better responsetimes. With the new buildingbeing built, the Tabernacle Officeof Emergency Management, in-cluding the Tabernacle Platoon of
the Pinelands Regional CERT
Team, will now have a home. Italso will provide space for theplacement of a fire truck, so 99percent of the township may beeligible for a lower ISO rating offour, which may lower homeown-er insurance by up to $300. It willalso provide shared facilities forboth training and a wash bay tomeet NJDEP standards.

EDITORIAL
Voters gave a thumbs up toTabernacles school budget lastWednesday, according to unoffi-cial Burlington County results. The vote was 576-408.
Officials said the budgetwould not raise taxes.
In the race for school board, three candidates ran unopposed.Their vote totals were:nTina Marie Coolidge: 553nDouglas Hess: 573nStephen Price: 563The Lenape School District
budget failed. Had it passed, offi-cials said it would have raisedTabernacle residents taxes byabout $103 for the average as-sessed home of $298,400.
The defeated budget proposalis disappointing, especially inlight of last years dramatic de-crease in funding, said LRHSDBoard of Education PresidentDr. William J. Bisignano Jr. Wewere optimistic that, althoughmodest, the increase in state aidand somewhat more positive at-mosphere this year would trans-
late into support for the budget.Regardless, we continue to becommitted to putting the educa-tion of our students first.
Last years 21 percent de-crease in state aid totaling $7.6million included state cuts of$1.1 million midway through the2009-10 school year and a reduc-tion in state aid of $6.5 millionfor 2010-11.
Those cuts resulted in a 10percent reduction in staff andprogram cuts.
Difficult times such as theseare a measure of a school com-munitys commitment to its dis-trict and students, said LRHSDSuperintendent Emily Capella.Unfortunately with this defeat, the budget is out of our handsand now moves to the municipal-ities and commissioner of edu-cation.
Capella noted that followinglast years defeated budget, thefinal budget received from thestate Department of Educationnoted that it was in the com-
missioners judgmento provide a thorougcient system of publiin the district.
As we have done the Lenape Regional Dcooperate and collabthe eight sending coto reach a final appret, Capella said. Byears experience, I dpate a final decisionend of June.
Governing bodiesof Lenapes eight stricts will meet to pgested budget cuts.
All eight municipatry to approve the bupresented and agreelevy by May 19.
However, if the stricts governing bodunanimously agrLenapes revised bcuts will be at the diActing CommissioCerf and Gov. ChriLenapes tax levy.

After the voteSo how does the new normal look?
T
he votes are counted, and your local school budget or
budgets are either in place or headed to your local mu-
nicipal governing body for possible additional revision.Either way, how do you feel about the new normal, as Gov.
Christie describes it?
Last year, the budget process
was just new although
many school administrators
and leaders no doubt could find
much more colorful language to
describe what occurred. State
funding was slashed at, at least
for budgeting purposes, the last minute. This year, some state
aid was restored in many places, but there was a state-mandat-
ed 2 percent cap on tax hikes (barring voter approval to go over
that limit).
And it appears that things arent going to change that much
in the near future, hence the term new normal.
This year, we didnt hear as much outcry about the cuts.
Maybe because they werent as deep and some of the state
money taken last year was restored. Maybe because districts
had more time to prepare.
But the cuts have necessitated change in the way budgets are
put together. You can make a case that the cuts were too sharp,
but you also can point to positive results. School leaders, educa-
tors, parents and taxpayers have a new sense of urgency to hold
the line on spending while protecting valuable educational re-
sources that affect, among other things, property values.
Theres always room for legitimate debate when it comes to
taxing and spending. One persons vital program is another
persons waste.
But these days, there are more people at the table when deci-
sions are made and more open discussion about what commu-
nities value.
That change is due, at least in part, to the difficulty of craft-
ing a budget in these lean times. Its a change for the better.
