Difficulty Level

Our chart is a fun way for a child to measure his/her height. It isconstructed by working from three charts, one of which is repeated toproduce the length. The design is worked in Half Cross Stitch usingTapisserie Wool. It is mounted simply on a backing board and willbring joy to children as they watch their height increase.

MaterialsAnchor Tapisserie Wool (new/old no) : 14 skeins White 8004/0402, 3skeins Emerald 8988/0737 and one skein each of Pale Autumn Gold8052/3370, Pale Honeysuckle Yellow 8132/0311, Cherry Red8216/013, Pale Rose Pink 8392/023, Cornflower Blue 8690/0132,Pale Emerald 8982, Pale Chocolate 9656/0392, Chocolate 9662/0986and Black 9800/0403. Piece of thread canvas 30 cm x 120 cm, 10 holes to 2.5 cm.Stiff backing card 17 cm x 100 cm.Toning Felt for backing 16 cm x 98 cm.Tape measure 2 cm wide.Tapestry frame with 30 cm tapes.Milward tapestry needle No. 18.

InstructionsMark the centre of the canvas lengthwise with a line of bastingstitches. Mount canvas on frame short edges to tapes. Diagrams 1 and3 are used once and diagram 2 must be repeated eight times between1 and 3, giving the chart its length. The centre of each diagram isindicated by black arrows which should coincide with the bastingstitches. Each background square on all diagrams represents oneintersection of double threads of canvas or one Half Cross Stitch.Commence embroidery 10 cm from top of the canvas and followingkey to diagrams work Diagram 1. When this has been completed, workDiagram 2 eight times immediately below. Finish the chart byworking Diagram 3.

On completion of embroidery, remove from frame. Place canvascentrally over backing card and secure at top edge of sticking pins intoedge of card. Pull canvas firmly over lower edge and secure in sameway. Repeat on side edges, pulling canvas until it lies taut on the card.Fold surplus canvas back and secure by lacing from side to side andtop to bottom using a strong thread. Remove pins and stitch felt toback concealing the lacing. Attach tape measure down centre ofdesign, between leaves, either by sewing or sticking into place withdouble sided tape forming the stem of flower.

Half Cross Stitch – This stitch consists of small diagonal stitches eachworked over one intersection of double threads of canvas as shown inthe diagram, with the stitches on the reverse vertical.
