GOOD NEWSA<7s ztt 2-47 I 7. Peter e:33 / John zo:l9-3r
Exaltation, sincerity of heart, indescribable and glorious joy-these are the
words that describe the gathering of believers that formed the early Church
after Pentecost. Filled with the Spirit, they committed themselves to YheWay" by caring for one an-other, following the teaching of the apostles, and
breaking bread in their homes. lmagine going to Mass every week and being
greeted as an old friend or a new one, not worrying whether someone was
genuine, and feeling that something miraculous and new was in the world.
Why isn't it this way in every church? ln an age that demands proof, I
wonder whether we've grown suspicious of faith. ln a culture that thinks
most people have an angle, lwon-derwhetherwe have a hard time believing
that someone could love us so much that he would die for us'
Maybe we've all become a little more like Thomas in his doubt rather than
in his belief. I keep returning to Peter's words: "Although you have not seen
him you love him."It takes a remarkable faith to love someone you haven't seen. But parents
do it for their unborn children. We love those who have been taken from us
in death. lf we can love these, however imperfectly, surely we can love
Christ, who died that we might live. Surely we can strive to love all people,
known and unknown, because they are God's children.
ln the stories of the early Church, we see the evidence of love-joy and
compassion for all. What if every church could do this today?

de dr PAD Rf,
A[y priut keeps ulking about the need for Catlnlia ta
"deepen our conuersion.' I'rn already Catlnlk. Wlut eke isthere n conuert to?
Many times we think of conversion as something thathappens only when someone joins the Catholic Church. But the word conuersionhas more than one meaning. As usedby your pries! it means to enter more deeply into a life offaith. As Catholics, we are indeed called to continualconversion-
I have a non-Catholic friend who has the date sheaccepted Christ on her Bible. I could putJanuary 8, 1962, onmy Bible because that's the date of my baptism, the day Iwas saved. At baptism I received the grace to convert dailywhen I am old enough to do so on my own.
But my conversion isn't something that happened once inthe past. It wasn't the last sacrament I received. It was thefirst sacrament I received as I began myjourney of faith. Wedeepen our faith and continue our conversion as we live thesacramental life ofthe Church.
This is seen most clearly througlr the sacraments ofEucharist and penance. Eucharist is something Catholicsparticipate in weekly, and most Catholics take part in thesacrament of penance at least once a year.
Why? Because we need to deepen our conversion.

Divine Mercy Sunday
During the course of Jesus' revelations to Saint Faustina on the DivineMercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicatedto the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sundayafter Easter. The liturgical texts ofthat day, the 2nd Sunday of Easter,
concern the institution of the Sacrament of Penance, the Tribunal ofthe Divine Mercy, and are thus already suited to the request of OurLord. This Feast was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John
Paul ll on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30 April2000. ln a decree dated 23 May 2OOg the Congregation for DivineWorship and the Discipline of the Sacraments stated that "fhroughoutthe world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name DivineMercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials thatmankind will experience in the years to come." These papal acts repre-sent the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a privaterevelation, an act of papal infallibility proclaiming the certain sanctityof the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as requested by
Our Lord to St. Faustina.
