THE LARK ASCENDINGElgar Overture: Cockaigne Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Handel Music for the Royal Fireworks: selection Arnold English Dances Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Walton Henry V Suite
Gergely Madaras conductor • Paul Barritt violin
Hear a selection of pieces that have always featured prominently in this orchestra’s repertoire – both Elgar and Vaughan Williams entrusted the Hallé with symphonic premieres. We perform Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture and Vaughan Williams’ Tallis Fantasia, as well as a true icon of English music, The Lark Ascending, perfectly depicted in the hands of the Hallé’s Permanent Guest Leader, Paul Barritt. Laurence Olivier described his Oscar-winning film as ‘William’s Henry V’ so central to its success was William Walton’s dazzling score.

Come follow the band, wonder at the entry of the gladiators and get set for a fun-filled afternoon of carnival music! Ringmaster Stephen Bell (surely one of the Greatest Showmen) will march you past an array of Saint-Saens’s famous animals. We also have the chance to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Hallé Children’s Choir with Alphabicycle Order.
“As soon as I read Christopher
Reid’s collection of children’s poems Alphabicycle Order I wanted to set them to
music. These wonderful, short poems play on words, ranging from the sinister (the menacing
Vumpire, a cross between an umpire and a vampire) to the absurd (the Umbrellaphant, half elephant, half umbrella!). We meet with Cluckworth chickens, an Iciclist, the fabulous Liarbird and the very superior Queen Bean.
I hope they’ll be fun to sing, shout, play and speak.” Colin Matthews
