What is SWiG?
• Subsea Wireless Group
• Industry Working Group to:
– Promote interoperability between users of subsea wireless communications through the development of open standards
– Raise industry awareness, acceptance and integration of subsea wireless, through educational material and reference case studies
– Promote best practices & knowledge transfer across the industry
• Assess different wireless technologies– Radio communication
– Acoustic communication
– Free Space Optics communication (FSO)
– Inductive power
– Hybrid solutions
– their relevance to subsea operations

Working groups
• Groups convene at SWiG meetings held quarterly, alternating between venues in Europe and
the US – next meeting in Pau January 2020
Subsea Technology NeedsTechnology Capabilities
GroupWireless Standards
• Identify industry uses for
wireless technologies
• Complete, reviewed and
updated as new operators
join the group
• Assess wireless
technologies and relevance
to subsea operations
• Identify current
applications
• Map technologies to needs
• Build on existing open
standards to develop new
standards that support full
interoperability between
hardwired and wireless
systems subsea

Wireless Standards
Create standards for:
• Radio
• Acoustic
• Free Space Optic
• Inductive Power
• Hybrid
The above standards are applicable to:
• Devices that support data, voice & video
transmissions
• Devices that support inductive
recharging/data transmissions
Radio standard, completed 2016
• Submitted to API 17F Sub-committee
• Now back with SWiG for review
Acoustic standard being developed
• NATO subsea acoustic standard (Janus) reviewed
• Final draft under review by SWiG members
Inductive power standard in progress
Next step: Free Space Optics standard
Ongoing: SWiGstandard document
• Define interface between SWiG wireless standards and devices
• Allows interchangeability of wireless systems
• Support an overall hybrid standard

Acoustic Standard Update
• Final review
• Standard covers interoperability of devices
• Provides a variable length packet structure to transmit payload data at up to 200 bps
• Transmit data, potentially images
– Allows applications to be developed using a communication channel, with consideration for reliability and security
as required
• May be used alongside proprietary communications for increased functionality and data
rate
• SWiGacoustic version 2

Innovation from a Standard
• Variable packet structure provides
flexibility
• Innovation on the application layer
– Security
– Networking
– Interface to assets
– Operate in parallel with additional
communication methods

Example Use Cases
– Riser Monitoring
– Seismic monitoring
– AUVs
– Environmental monitoring

Multiple Standards for Wide Area Network
• Acoustic long range low data
rate
• FSO / Radio for short range
high data rate
• Inductive for wireless power
transfer
• Wireless network of subsea
assets including vehicles
• Wireless network of subsea
infrastructure including vehicle
charging and position reference
