CANTEEN
PANCAKE WEEK: It has been a very successful Pancake Week,
with the last day tomorrow Friday 28 February. Thank you to
all the wonderful volunteers who have helped serve at both
recess and lunch, I really appreciate your help.
SUSHI LUNCH ORDERS: Just a reminder if you are ordering
Sushi for lunch on Fridays: Chicken, Tuna or Vegetarian (all with
cucumber, avocado, carrot and mayonnaise), and your child
has allergies to any of the ingredients and you would like to
make a special order, please let us know by Thursday
afternoon.
Qkr PROFILES: There are still errors on the PROFILE of some
students. Please make sure you have the correct 2020 class
number and name of your child. Without the correct
information, lunches and special orders go to the wrong
classes.
Qkr ORDERS: There have been an increase in the number of
students who are under the assumption that an online lunch
order has been placed. After placing your Qkr orders, please
confirm the details on your receipt ie: date/name/class. It is
disappointing for the children when we tell them that the
order has not been successfully placed.
CANTEEN VOLUNTEERS: If anyone is available on Friday 27
March or Friday 3 April and can help in the Canteen, please let
me know, we would really appreciate it.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION REGISTER
As part of our units of inquiry we often look for primary
resources in our community to share information with children
– and one of the most powerful resources are our parents! Do
you have an interesting job, knowledge about an area, skills or
a passion that you’d like to share – then let us know! Whether
it be science, the environment, the arts, technology, animals,
medical, education, government – the list goes on – our units
are broad and cover a lot of content and our children are
always engaged when they get to hear first-hand from
someone in our community.
If you are interested, please contact Sarah Button (the IB
Senior Leader) or your child’s classroom teacher. We need to
know what you’re happy to speak about or show the children,
what year levels and how it’s best to contact you. We will
begin to build our register so that all of our classes have access
and we can further strengthen the relationships between the
school and our local community. You don’t need to be a
professional speaker, we don’t expect special presentations –
just speak from the heart and your time will be greatly
appreciated! We look forward to hearing from you and getting
to know more about the families of Stradbroke.
LIBRARY
Our online catalogue system is called Accessit. Students in
Years 3-7 can access this from home from our school
website http://www.stradsch.sa.edu.au/ On the homepage
of our website there is a link under the 'Quick Links' to the
Stradbroke Library Catralogue. Students in these year levels
can login using the same username and password they use at
school for computer and Accessit logins.
The advantage of using Accessit at home is that students can
check what they currently have on loan, they can see what is
overdue and they can search our catalogue and make
reservations. We also encourage them to submit book reviews
through the system. When they are recording their reading
lists for The Premier’s Reading Challenge they will find having
access at home will enable this to be done more
independently.
We encourage you as parents to have a look at Accessit with
your children. Ask them to show you their borrowing history to
promote discussions about what they have been reading and
how often they borrow. You can also see how their reading
choices have changed over time. If you have children who are
reluctant to borrow search our catalogue with them to try and
find books that might interest them. We would love to help a
child who came in asking for a particular type of book or series
they found while searching at home.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

around the world, Pelican Productions is very excited to bring
Disney’s The Lion King JR the musical to the Adelaide stage this

“Ed - the hyena”
Don’t miss the sights and sounds of Disney’s The Lion King
Jr this April 2 - 4, at The Arts Theatre, Angas Street, Adelaide.

Ali will also be involved in this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival in
the show “Peter Combe in Brush your hair with a toothbrush”
at the Corona Theatre at the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Ali
will be in 8 of the 9 shows over two weekends, 7th - 8th of March
and 14th - 15th of March. Tickets available from the Adelaide
Fringe Website.
MORNING PLAY INVESTIGATIONS IN L2
In Year 1, we spend the first 45 minutes of
our day engaged in morning play
investigations. This hands-on play reflects
the interests of children, is purposeful, and
promotes the ability to think laterally and
creatively.
Last week the students of L2 combined
their interests to work collaboratively, as a
class, to build a city. Students practised
using skills to self-initiate, to problem solve,
take turns and to think deeply.
Over the week the children discussed how
they could improve their city. They added
schools, shops, car parks, bridges and
various environments to meet the needs of
all living things.
FR3 AND F4
Do you know what empathy is? Do
you know how to use empathy and
why it is important? FR3’s Year 4
students and F4’s Year 2 students,
have been learning all about
empathy in our buddy class. We
know so much about it that we
even talked about it to the whole
school at assembly in week 3.
We have found out that empathy is
knowing how another person feels.
It is important because it makes
people feel valued, loved and cared
for. Some ways that we can show
empathy are to:
• say to a person “I understand”
• ask someone who looks left out
to play with you
• listen to a person
• ask a person if they are ok.
We have also been reading books
about empathy and have made
artworks to show all the ways that
we can use empathy in our lives. We
hope that by understanding what
empathy is, more people can use
empathy in our school. More
empathy will make our school even
happier than it is now.

What leads to engagement in writing, with real skill development?
• Exciting stimulus pictures and task ideas,
• Think time,
• Talking to brainstorm ideas,
• Choosing ideas and vocabulary,
• Excitement,
• Concentrated writing,
• Sharing,
• Giving and receiving feedback to improve authorship skills,
• Developing skill within text sections,
• Laughter leading to engagement in writing and real skill development.
How do your Stradbroke Staff know this?
They experienced the FUN and power of ‘The Seven Steps to Writing Success’ on the Week 4 Pupil Free
Day. This is a resource that develops strong writing engagement whilst building effective, creative
writing skills.
As always, we are grateful to our community for the opportunity to take part in whole site learning
experiences, building across-year level consistency to benefit our students from Reception to Yr 7.
Staff learnt about the theory behind this resource and how to introduce the steps in a way that builds
student understanding and skill within Narrative Texts.
So what are ‘The Seven Steps to Writing Success’?
Staff learnt that introducing the skills individually and out of
order….
- Steps 2, 3 and 7 first, then
- Steps 1, 4, 5 and finally
- Step 6…
would ultimately result in stronger learning when students end up
writing whole Narrative texts.
Many staff have already begun to action this in classes by -
introducing Sizzling Starts to begin narrative texts or by asking
students to search for Sizzling Starts in the books they are reading.
Soon they will begin to introduce Step 3 ‘Tightening Tension’ as an
authorship skill to build drama or excitement within a narrative
text. We look forward to sharing their writing successes with you.

What parents have said… A step dad recalled an incident at the weekend with his 12 year old step daughter. He said that the input he had received the previous week from the course helped him keep his cool and brought a more favourable outcome.
A single Mum who had presented as quite anxious on the first night told the group in week 2 that she had made an appointment with her 15 year old son during the week and had a far more favourable discussion with him than would previously have been the case.

We will be developing information packs to help
our primary schools keep you informed, so stay
engaged with your school to keep updated with
the latest information.
Pilot high schools welcome year 7s
Our pilot program started this term, with
Wirreanda Secondary School, Mitcham Girls
High School and John Pirie Secondary School
welcoming their irst year 7s ahead of the
statewide move in 2022.
As part of this work, we’ve been speaking to
families from each of the pilot schools.
What pilot families are saying
Parents and students are looking forward to the
new opportunities that high school has to ofer.
Some parents and students feel they are ready
to take the next step, and many feel primary
school is no longer a challenge as year 7 grows
near. While high school is a big change in year
7 or year 8, the desire to grow outweighs the
apprehension.
Some worries remain, such as being in a bigger
school, the diferent expectations of workload,

Parent Update Week 5, Term 1 - 2020
When parents solve all children s problems we not only increase their dependency on adults but we teach kids to be afraid of making mistakes and to blame themselves for not being good enough. That s fertile ground for anxiety and depressive illness.
So, how can we raise kids to be courageous problem-solvers rather than self-critical scaredy cats? Here are six practical ideas to get you started.
1. Turn requests into problems for kids to solve
Kids get used to bringing their problems to parents to solve. If you keeping solving them, they ll keep bringing them. Mum, my sister is annoying me! Dad, can you ask my teacher to pick me for the team? Hey, I can t find my socks! It s tempting if you are in a time-poor family to simply jump in and help kids out. Alternatively, you can take a problem-solving approach, cuing them to resolve their own problems and take responsibility for their concerns. What can you do to make her stop annoying you? What s the best approach to take with your teacher? Socks, smocks! Where might they be?
2. Ask good questions to prompt problem-solving
A problem-solving approach relies on asking good questions, which can be challenging if you are used to solving your child s problems. The first question when a child brings you a problem should be: Can you handle this on your own? Next should be, What do you want me to do to help you solve the problem? These questions are not meant to deter children from coming to you; rather, to encourage and teach them to start working through their own concerns themselves.
3. Coach them through problems and concerns

RESILIENCE
So, your child feels she was unfairly left out of a school sports team by a teacher and asks you get involved. The easiest solution may be to meet with the teacher and find out what s going on. You may or not resolve the problem but in doing so you are teaching a child to become dependent on you. Alternatively, you could coach your child to speak to the teacher herself and find out why she was left out. Obviously, there are times when children need their parents to be advocates for them such as when they are being bullied, but we need to make the most of the opportunities for children to speak for themselves. Better to help your child find the right words to use and discuss the best way to approach another person when they have problems. These are great skills to take into adulthood.
4. Prepare kids for problems and contingencies
You may coach your child to be independent walk to school, spend some time alone at home (when old enough), catch a train with friends but does he know what to do in an emergency? What happens if he comes home after school and the house is locked? Who should he go to? Discuss different scenarios with children whenever they enter new or potentially risky situations so that they won t fall apart when things don t go their way. Remember the Boy Scouts motto be prepared!
5. Show a little faith
Sometimes you ve got to show faith in children. We can easily trip them up with our negative expectations, such as by saying Don t spill it! to a child who is carrying a glass filled with water. Of course, your child doesn t want to spill it but you ve just conveyed your expectations with that statement. We need to be careful that we don t sabotage children s efforts to be independent problem-solvers with comments such as, Now don t stuff it up! You ll be okay won t you? You re not very good at looking after yourself!
6. Applaud mistakes and stuff-ups
Would a child who accidentally breaks a plate in your family while emptying the dishwasher be met with a That s really annoying, you can be clumsy sometimes response or an It doesn t matter, thanks for your help type of response? Hopefully it won t be the first response, because nothing shuts a child s natural tendencies to extend themselves down quicker than an adult who can t abide mistakes. If you have a low-risk-taking, perfectionist, consider throwing a little party rather than making a fuss when they make errors so they can learn that mistakes don t reflect on them personally, and that the sun will still shine even if they break a plate, tell a joke that falls flat or don t get a perfect examination score.
