Stirling’s roots are firmly based in leading
innovative research activities and delivering
unique and advanced solutions. Our original
research activity for DERA and the UK MoD has
provided many of the fledgling technologies that
we have integrated into global aerospace and
defence platforms as mature, proven capabilities
– active controllers for fly-by-wire aircraft, and
advanced autopilots and hover control for next
generation nuclear and diesel submarines.
Many of our technology demonstrator
programmes have resulted in industry firsts.

Stirling’s energy systems engineers provide advanced
simulation and analysis for extreme environments.
Our expansion into energy systems has already led to
the successfully development and deployment of
prototype systems into two industry sectors.

Waste water to energy process using algae. Stirling has
brought I-Phyc’s innovative concept into reality:
• Phase 1 demonstrator completed end 2013, funded by
Innovate UK & Stirling
• Phase 2 demonstrator to complete April 2015 in £1.1m
project funded by DECC, WoE LEP, Stirling and
Wessex Water/Geneco
Stirling has provided:
• Advanced real-time control system
• Adapted our AWEAR condition monitoring system for
I-Phyc process
• Full systems integration and supplier management
• Supported additional funding calls

• Get well networked so you know potential partners and funding streams
• Use it to develop a produce or service you planned to do anyway
• Lead it yourself and be caution around outsourcing partners
• Must have strong business case, don’t take it on just to keep people busy
• Regular market and technical reviews to ensure you retain commercial focus
• Review regularly and be prepared to stop project if research isn’t
commercially viable
• If partnering with a University be sure they have a track record of supporting
projects with a commercial focus – can move at your pace
• It simply will not go as planned, lots of challenges along the way
• Spend all the money allocated!!!
