UNIT 3 - ADDITION
THEME : PLANTS
Addition means putting together two or more numbers. The total of two or more
numbers is called their sum.
*Addition is putting two or more numbers together.
Eg: 125 + 10 = 135 sum
Addends
The numbers we add together are called addends. The answer in addition is called
the sum.
Properties of addition
1. When zero (0) is added to a number, the sum is the number
itself.
Eg: 250 + 0 = 250
1525 + 0 = 1525
2. When one (1) is added to a number, the sum is the successor of the given
number.
Eg: 999 + 1= 1000
361 + 1= 362
The sum is always
greater than the
addends except one of
the addend is zero.
The famous Indian
astronomer
Aryabhatta
discovered zero.
-
5
3. A change in the order of the addends does not change the sum.
Eg: 1)244 + 231 = 475
231 + 244 = 475
So, 244 + 231=231 + 244
Eg: 2)2000+ (1000+3000) = (2000+1000) + 3000
I. Fill in the blanks
a) 2462 + 4120 = -------- + 2462
b) 5000 + ------- = 4000 + 5000
c) 1250 + 0 = -----------
d) 1189 + ------- = 1189
e) 1230 + 1 = ----------
f) 1925 + ---------- = 1926
g) 1500 + 9050 = 9050 + ---------
h) 6000 + ( 1000 + 2000 ) = -------- + ( 6000 + 2000 )
i) ( 3025 + 4000 ) + 2050 = --------- + ( 2050 + 4000 )
