Tolerance rings are made of hard, embossed spring steel strip andbelong to the class of frictionally engaging fasteners.
STAR Tolerance Rings were designed for especially easy, low-costfastening of machine parts. They replace complex contour-lockingkeyways or pinned, wedged and threaded connections andeliminate the need for expensive machining.

Application Examples
In many applications there are no definedforces to be transmitted between the partsto be joined. What is generally required insuch cases is a fixing device for such simplemachine parts as handles, ball knobs,labyrinth rings or bushings.
When STAR Tolerance Rings are used tofasten ball knobs to connecting rods, forexample, they eliminate the need for theusual thread on the rod and in the ballknob. Unlike threaded connections, jointsmade with STAR Tolerance Rings willnever loosen.

The fastening of belt pulleys, flywheels orfan rotors involves transmission of definedaxial or circumferential forces.
The assembly forces and transmittabletorque depend very much on the designand finish of the parts to be joined andcan differ greatly in practice from thevalues given in the tables.

The graph shows the mounting of rollingbearings of 200 mm diameter at atemperature of 20ºC with and withouta tolerance ring. In both cases thepressing force is initially 6500 N. As thetemperature rises, the pressing force falls.
For rolling bearings mounted without atolerance ring, the pressing force falls tozero at a temperature of 80ºC, whereaswith a tolerance ring there is still a smallpressure force of 2000 N at a temperatureof 170ºC.

Very often, an axial or circumferential forceof known magnitude is to be transmitted.Examples include the mounting of pulleys,flywheels or fan rotors, to name but a few.
Tolerance ring joints fortransmission of torque
Conventional fastening methods necessi-tate the machining of keyways into theshafts and bores of the mating parts.These keyways weaken the shaft and thusreduce the polar moment of inertia WP.This disadvantage does not apply whenSTAR Tolerance Rings are used.

General
This arrangement is suitable for series0810 and 0820 rings. It is extremelyeconomical because the ring is simplyplaced between the straight, cylindricalsurfaces of the bore and shaft. However,the assembly may be slightly off-center,and allowance must be made for areduction of about 20% in thetorques M given in the tables.
Free arrangement
This arrangement is used when perfectconcentricity is required or whencircumferential or major radial impactloads are to be expected. Selection of theappropriate fit between shaft and borekeeps run-out within the requiredtolerance limits, at the same timeproviding shock absorption to protectthe tolerance rings from damage.

If the load permissible on one tolerancering is exceeded in a given application,it is possible to fit two or more tolerancerings end to end until the sum of their loadratings exceeds the load to be carried.However, it is important to ensure that theindividual tolerance rings of the assemblyare separated by webs to prevent adjacenttolerance rings from slipping over eachother during mounting.

Design hints
The slanting edge keeps the tolerance ringfixed in place. This version is mainly usedto mount large rolling bearings in lightmetal housings.

In order to ensure maximum effect andlong life and to prevent damage to thetolerance rings, the following must beobserved in the design of the mating parts:
When series 0810 tolerance rings are to beused, the leading edge of the shaft must berounded to radius rw; series 0820 requiresa radius rg at the leading edge of the bore.
When the centered arrangement is to beused, the transition radii re at the walls ofthe retaining grooves in the bore and shaftshould be as small as possible to ensurethat the tolerance rings sit firmly againstthe walls of the grooves. Retaining grooveb requires a C13 fit. Details concerning thecorrect radius and groove width tolerancelimits are given in the tables.
If the radii indicated cannot be made, werecommend a chamfer of 20º.

The tolerance limits chosen for shaft andbore diameters determine the fit betweenthe two elements and thus the holdingcapacity of the tolerance ring assembly.

Please note the following:
a) Shaft tolerances are permissible up toISO h9, bore tolerances up to ISO H9,in exceptional cases up to ISO h11resp. H11.
b) The tolerances quoted for the mountingof rolling bearings and for torquetransfer refer to the combinations steelon steel or steel on many nonferrousmetals. They apply to temperatures upto 100ºC. Applications should be testedif they involve materials that differconsiderably from steel in their strengthproperties.
c) The torque capacities given in the tablesapply to the centered arrangement. If thefree arrangement is used, a reduction of20% must be allowed for.

Mounting Instructions
The tolerance ring is placed in the hous-ing, then the shaft pressed into the ring.
The tolerance ring is placed in the boreand a piece of flat stock (x) used tosupport it while the shaft is pressedinto place.
The tolerance ring is first placed in theshaft groove, then the shaft with thering in place is pressed into the bore.
The tolerance ring is placed around thestraight shaft and a piece of flat stock(x) is used to brace the ring as the shaftis pressed into place.
Always use a new tolerance ring whenassembling parts!

for mounting with STAR Tolerance Ringsonto commercially available drawn shaftsor threadless connecting rods.
The accompanying STAR Tolerance Ringensures that the knob or handle sits tightlyand securely.
No additional machining of the shafts orconnecting rods necessary, hence a highlycost-effective solution.
Mounting instructions Ball knobs are mounted by hammeringthem lightly onto the shafts. Please useonly rubber or plastic hammers with amaximum weight of 200 g!
