PRESIDENT’S REPORT

10Friendship in Sport

Baden WassSt Pauls Cricket Club President – 2015/16

The junior program started last winter withthe first year of St Pauls Master Classes tohelp junior cricketers of all ages from all clubsto improve cricket specific skills. These wererun by the Club Coach and well supported byappearances from senior players. With theshort notice to the start of the classes, theturnout was very promising and gives theclub something to build on for next season.

It was also the first year that the club has runMilo in2cricket and despite the low numbersthis season it is something that the clubneeds to build on in coming season to ensurethe longevity of the club. We ran four juniorteams this season; Under 11’s, 13’s and 15’sin the Inner South East Cricket League and anUnder 16’s team in the Box Hill Reporterleague. It was very encouraging to see thekids out there on Friday nights and Saturdaymornings having fun and their improvement

over the year was great to see. On behalf ofthe club, thank you to the players who gaveup their time to coach this year - JamesWatts, Johann Jesudhason, Hamza Khan, TomFacey, Aaron May and Gary Bennett. Also abig thanks to all everyone who helped out attraining and on game days to make things runsmoothly. In my time on the committee Idon’t think there has been more people helpout with the various junior tasks as lastseason.

The senior teams all had terrific periodsthroughout the season, unfortunately comefinals we were not good enough to take thechocolates. The most pleasing thing for mewas the performances of the junior players at13 and 14 years old performing as they did inthe senior teams.

Off the field it was a very good year for the

club. Moving our club home from SouthernReserve back to Batesford was a massivesuccess. It helped integrate the junior andsenior players and improved the turnout attraining and after games. Overall the feelaround the club was better and more united.

When I took over as president there club wasin debt and relied on the generosity ofmembers to keep the club running. We havenow cleared all of this debt and on the backof this the committee has investigated andare now raising funds to improve the nets atBatesford Reserve. This is a long term goal ofthe committee with the aim of having thesein place and ready to use by the beginning ofthe 2018-19 season. This is an ambitious goalas even with possible government grants, itwill still require a significant investment bythe club to achieve this.

To this end there was an increased focus on

external fund raising and sponsorship thisyear. Thank you to Monica McCarthy fororganising and running multiple communityBBQ’s and to everyone who helped out onthe days. It is my intention to leave the nextcommittee with the goal of increasingexternal revenue through greater communityengagement, something that promises to bevery challenging and rewarding.

Finally I would like to thank the committeefor the work throughout the year. There werea lot of new faces with four of the sevenmembers spending their first year on thecommittee. It was the first year of having ajunior co-ordinator and something that willensure the club focus on our juniors goingforward. I think it will be an exciting few yearsfor the club as all the junior and senior teamsimprove and push for a premiership and offthe field as the committee continues tostrengthen the club.

JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT

12Friendship in Sport

Greg KennedySt Pauls Cricket Club Junior Co-Ordinator – 2015/16

This season was an exciting one for St. Paul’sjunior cricket. This year we conducted aJunior Masterclass program before theseason started. The program involved kidsnew to cricket and those from other clubs aswell as many of our own junior players, delivering specific skills training across allareas of the game. Run by Jacob Attwood andwell supported by a number of senior players, this was a great success, particularly for afirst time venture into this area. Thisinaugural program showed great promise interms of both recruiting new junior cricketersto the club and refreshing and improving theskills our own players. It was a fantastic wayto ramp up to the new season and isdefinitely worth continuing and building onfor the future.

In addition to this we also started our Milo In-2-Cricket program, again run by Jake, aimedat getting younger kids interested in cricketand developing basic skill. This program waseasy to run using the fantastic detailedprogram and equipment provided by Cricket

Australia. Although numbers were low, thecoach and kids involved had a great time, andthere were some real and obviousimprovements in the cricketing skills of theseyoungsters. We currently intend to try andintroduce Milo T-20-Blast next season, whichprovides a fun and safe pathway between thebasic skills and U11s cricket. The introductionof this program has seen a number of clubsthat I know of in the SE drastically increasetheir overall junior numbers over only a fewyears. This is essential for the long termviability of any cricket club and ours is noexception. In terms of competitive cricket this year sawthe expansion of the juniors from three tofour teams, with the addition of an U16steam in the Box Hill League to cater for aninflux of new players at the upper age rangeof our juniors. This is great for the club andits immediate future, especially with anumber of these players also playing seniorcricket this year, and acquitting themselvesvery well as 13, 14 and 15 year olds againstmature and experienced competition. A big

congratulations to Owen Colley, Noah Turudia,Sam Kelly, Pat Facey, Matt Kennedy, BenEdwards, Rhys Incoll and Evan Stamos on theirperformances in the seniors this year. It shouldalso be noted that Evan not only secured a spotin the St Pauls 2nd XI this year, but also madethe ISEC U14 representative team and selectedas vice-captain, a fantastic achievement.

The U11s struggled for numbers this year, butmanaged to field a side each week. While notoverly successful in terms of wins, theimportant thing was involvement and thatthese younger juniors had a blast this year withseveral playing cricket for the first time. HabibAmir was outstanding with both bat and ball, making the most runs and taking the secondmost wickets, while Harry Douglas the leadingwicket taker. Thanks to the phenomenal effortsof Aaron May as coach, ably assisted by GaryBennett.

The U13s also struggled for numbers, with U11splayers Habib and Harry player up to bolster thenumbers. Habib was again outstanding, takingthe most wickets and coming runner up in thebatting to a very impressive Faaiz Butt. Again, the U13s struggled throughout the seasonagainst some very impressive competition. However, it was testament to their

development and resilience that they racked uptheir first win in the final game of the season –against one of the teams that played in thefinals. Once again, a huge thank-you to thecoaches, Johann (Yogi) Jesudhason and HamzaKhan for all of their hard work.

The U15s and U16s were a combined squadwith several of the players playing for bothteams. The teams had relatively successfulseasons, with both only narrowly missing outon finals this year. The U15s were ably led bycaptain Evan Stamos, who also shared thebatting honours with newcomer Chris Nielson.Noah Turudia led the bowling attack, closelyfollowed by Massimo Cappiello and Sam Kelly. The U16s were captained by the impressiveOwen Colley. Noah and Massimo againfeatured, but this time with the bat, with Noahthe leading run scorer and Massimo the runnerup. Ben Edwards shouldered a huge bowlingworkload this season and claimed the mostwickets, while Zain Butt followed close behind.Massimo’s all round achievements acrossbatting, bowling and fielding saw himdeservedly win the 2015/16 overall JuniorChampion award. To his enormous credit,James Watts found himself unexpectedlycoaching both of these teams by himself thisyear, with game day help from Baden and I.

Greg KennedySt Pauls Cricket Club Junior Co-Ordinator – 2015/16

This was a huge effort, with training and twomatches a week, and the boys really havehim to thank for their development andsuccess.

Finally, a special mention to Tom Facey, who, while for some reason not consideringhimself a coach, attended each junior trainingsession and scored every game for the U15son a Friday and the U13s on a Saturday. It ispeople like Tom and the other coaches, alongwith the handful of parents who help out inmany other capacities, who enable thejuniors to successfully function and developthe talent that we see making its way into thesenior ranks. This in turn is what drives thecontinued survival and success of the seniorclub teams. I would like to wholeheartedlythank these people and encourage others toput their hand up for next season, bothsenior players and parents, in any capacitythey can. I know from personal experiencehow rewarding this can be. We rely on toofew people to run the juniors, and this isunsustainable in the long run if we wish togrow and prosper into the future. Remember, even small or part time contributions areinvaluable, so please let the incoming

committee know if you can help out.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone on thecommittee for all of their support, hard workand commitment. As a parent, player andfellow committee member I am eternallygrateful. Without you guys the club simplywouldn’t function.

COACH’S REPORT

15Friendship in Sport

Jacob AttwoodSt Pauls Cricket Club Head Coach – 2015/16

Although the club unfortunately did not addto it’s trophy cabinet, the 2015/16 seasonshould still be remembered as a greatsuccess. The club has worked incredibly hardover a long period of time to grow, and fieldfour strong sides and 2015/16 saw the clubgo an impressive 43-15, and have all fourteams representing the club in finals cricket. That first weekend of finals saw many clubmembers learn some valuable lessons aboutthe sport, and the efforts of the 4th XI tocome within three deliveries of a Premiershipwill be remembered for a long time to come.

The 1st XI had one of the most disappointingseasons possible in 2014/15, and were forcedto work their way back into the top gradeafter three seasons in Menzies Shield andthen MacGibbon Shield in the ECA. The clubdid well to retain the vast majority of playersfrom that season, and the feeling among thegroup was one of intent to make the stay inBurt Shield a short one. Although the SemiFinal didn’t go according to plan, to go

through the regular season with a 10-2-1record is no mean feat, and came on the backof some outstanding team cricket. The key tosuccess was the one-day form of the game, where the club went 7-0 and effectivelysealed their place in finals.

Amongst the solid team performances were anumber of individual highlights, and anextremely deserved first Club Championshipaward for Luke Pappon. Luke has a hugeresponsibility in the team and the playinggroup as a whole for a 20-year-old, and hasestablished himself as the best player at theclub. His glovework was always immaculate, and his batting was extremely consistent.Luke now has a real understanding of hisimportance to the team and the club, and hasrelished the responsibility. I look forward toseeing his contributions next season.

James Watts made his way into the 1st XI latelast year on the back of some strongperformances with the bat, and made a place

in the top order his own. The improvement in histechnique was only bettered by his application atthe crease, and he reaped the rewards accordingly.

Sean McKay bounced back from an interrupted2014/15 to lead the bowling attack superbly. Seanspent the first half of the year beating the bat, applying pressure and always giving his best effort. In the second half of the year he converted this intowickets, taking 22 post-Christmas wickets toconclude his best season in recent years. At just 23,he has plenty of high quality cricket ahead of him.

Will Walton has set the benchmark in intensity attraining and in games for a number of years, and2015/16 was no different. He proved his worth inevery game, and provided valuable wickets each andevery week, taking two or more wickets on 11occasions. Will lead the club with 34 wickets, all inthe 1st XI.

The key factor the 1s contributors have in commonis youth. Of the 16 players to play in the 1st XI thisseason, 11 were under 30, and only one over 35. Itis important that the players involved in the SemiFinal loss learn from it and strive to go two betternext season.

The 2nd XI were shooting for an unprecendentedthree-peat, and even more unprecedented is thatthey had their third captain in as many years in ChrisHarding.

It is a great reflection of the club’s depth that the 2shave done so well in recent years, and the 2s againmade finals after a promotion, and with a vastlydifferent playing group. Making the 2s’ season evenbetter was the response after falling to 1-3 from thefirst four games.

Firstly, I’d like to congratulate Chris on anoutstanding job as captain. Chris helped forge anidentity for his team, and they had a clear and

The 21 players at the first session set thetone for a season of great trainingattendance.

effective game plan that delivered sevenwins from the last nine games to seal aplace in the final. Although the semi finaldidn’t go to plan, the 2s have enjoyed asignificant period of success and there isno reason for it to end with this season.

Unfortunately for the 2s, I expect them toplay going forward without Nick Hughes.Nick had made his 1s debut two yearsearlier as an 18-year-old and enjoyedsuccess in the highest grade. The onlyreason Nick didn’t find a spot in the 1sthis season was due to the performanceof the top 6 across the year, and heproved to be a class above in B-Grade.Nick averaged 33 and struck at nearly arun a ball for the entire season, and allagainst the new ball opening. The seasonwas the product of an extended period ofhard work, and I look forward to Nickbuilding on it next season.

Brad Clement also enjoyed his first year inthe 2s, and delivered eerily similar results

COACH’S REPORT

17Friendship in Sport

Jacob AttwoodSt Pauls Cricket Club Head Coach – 2015/16

The 3s were ably lead again by Shaun Clement, whohas done a great job over the past two seasons inleading his team to finals twice. The 3s had a goodblend of youth, talent and experience that saw themroll off 11-straight wins to finish two games clear ontop of the ladder.

The 3s fielded an amazing 31 players last season, and an amazing seven scored over 100 runs and sixtook 8 or more wickets. Despite the player turnoverthroughout the season, the 3s continued to win andwin well. Heshan Somaratne (pictured) and TomFacey were deserved award winners for their effortsthroughout the year, but the 3s epitomised theteam cricket the club has prided itself on. Althoughthe Semi Final was a disappointment, the 3s shouldcontinue to aim high next season.

The 4s were equally unsettled with 39 players, butalways acquitted themselves well and delivered ahuge turnaround on last season, making the finalsand then falling just short in the big dance. In hisfirst season, Peter May was the consummate leader, delivering with both bat and ball all year whilecreating a great environment for the young playersto learn the nuances of the game. DmitryShevchenko was another strong contributor acrossthe season, and enjoyed his best season ever withthe bat while Greg Kennedy provided great supportas Vice Captain.

Finally, I’d like to thank the committee for their on-going support and insight. I think the move toBatesford Reserve paid enormous dividends acrossthe whole club; training attendance has improvedout of sight, and the general environment of theentire club has made it a pleasure to coach for theentire season. I look forward to seeing what is instore for the club, and urge our members not to reston our performances this season and strive forgreater success. Go Saints!

to Nick while shouldering the burden ofwicketkeeper. Brad may be unorthodox intechnique and approach, but provedeffective again and should aim for higherhonours next season.

With the majority of the bowling stocksfrom previous seasons either not playingat all or in different teams, Jason D’Souzastood up as the leader of the bowlingattack. Jason had his best pre-seasonsince he started playing senior cricket, and it culminated in a 1st XI debut that heshould aim to build on next season.

It may have taken a couple of weeks toget going, but the 2s should feel hungry toachieve more success next season, andshould feel confident about theirprospects. The nature of the 2nd XI is thatthe team changes each year with playersmoving up grades, but the strength of the3rd XI this season should get them excitedfor what’s to come.

With one win came another, this time against STCSouth Camberwell as we again reduced theopposition to a manageable total and chased itdown quickly. Hayden McCarthy’s 3/30 kept STC to116, and Luke was still yet to be dismissed twogames into the season as we chased the total 1down and inside 17 overs.

We saw Round 3 as our toughest test; AYC had lostthe Grand Final the season before, and we weregoing to their ground that they played at so well.Despite dropping a couple of early chances weeventually got going, taking all 10 wickets again asAYC managed 109 on a small ground. Will Waltonwas phenomenal, taking 4/9 in his eight overs andDamien D’Souza combined well with him, taking2/16. The pair came on at 2/65 and by the time theywere done AYC were 2/90. After a top order collapsewe recovered and ended up passing the total withfour wickets in hand.

In Round 4 we were asked to bat first for the firsttime, and the top order took its chance againstMount Waverley Uniting, posting 204 at SouthernReserve. Luke may have been dismissed the weekbefore for the first time, but he followed that upwith 84; a career best that would last less than aseason. Uniting were never in the hunt with thechase, making 132, but forced us to field all 40 oversas we couldn’t take 10 wickets.

Round 5 was our Past Players Day and tocommemorate the day we played at BatesfordReserve for the first time in three seasons. We againbowled first and kept Glen Waverley Cougars to 101.Four players combined for two wickets each, beforeGary Bennett guided us home with 33 not out and asix-wicket win.

We went into the two-dayers with lots ofmomentum, and took on Uniting for the secondtime in three games. At their ground, we dismissedthem for 127, with Will Walton taking 4/29 in an

We started the year with five one-dayers;this is a format that we are comfortablewith and have had success in the past. StJames Malvern Valley, our Round 1opponents, were our first opponents, andgiven they were mid-table last year wesaw it as a good opportunity to see wherewe’d be for the year. We kept them to 150through 40 overs thanks to wickets toSean McKay and Will Walton beforechasing down the total comfortablythanks to Luke Pappon and James Watts’unbeaten 90-run stand.

impressive display. Luke again took on Uniting’sbowling attack and won, making 81 as wepassed their total 1 down and then kept goingbefore putting them back in. Unfortunately wecouldn’t get10 points, but we stayed equal-topand unbeaten.

In Round 7 we took on last year’s semi-finalistsin Mount Waverley Catholics. They gave us alesson in batting with discipline, and foughthard for 80 overs to post 237. MayfieldReserve is a good ground to bat on, and thehome side took advantage. Even still, wefought hard and fancied our chances. Afterlosing early wickets we moved within strikingdistance before losing late wickets to fall 23short. The reason we got so close was JamesWatts, who was superb in batting a significantportion of the day for 62, and showing hismore experienced team mates how it’s done.

We didn’t get a chance to fully atone for theloss against Monash as we only had one day ofplay, but we posted 270 against Monash atSouthern Reserve. For the second game in arow our top order fell cheaply, before astunning 114 from Jake Pappon saw us notonly recover but take charge of the game. Thiswould be our last game before Christmas, andwe would go in to the break in second placeand with finals on the mind.

The calendar year started with another one-dayer, this time against top of the tableEdinburgh, and we delivered arguably our mostcomplete performance of the year. We startedsuperbly thanks to our bowlers, and Edinburghrecovered but could only manage 148. Lukeshowed the break did him no harm, registeringanother century as we passed the requiredtotal three-down.

Our run didn’t get any easier as we again took

on AYC, and again in a one-dayer. In short, wedid not bowl well, allowing them to get to7/205 despite 2/25 from Hayden. Luke againmade runs (you see the theme here), to give usa chance, but middle order wickets appearedto be costly. Matt Pirovano and Will Walton at6 and 7 put on 39 valuable runs before thelatter fell and the former helped us within sightof the target. With one to get off the last ballSean McKay slapped one through mid-off tocue wild celebrations. It was one of the mostmemorable wins in my time at the club, and acredit to the attitude and belief the playinggroup had throughout the year.

We’d proven our worth as a one-day side butstill had work to do in the longer form of thegame. We had St James Malvern Valley at theirground, and despite some late order runs fromthem we still managed to keep them to 156.Sean McKay was superb with 4/24. For thethird time in as many games, Luke made runs, and eclipsed his previous best with 86 to guidea nine-wicket win.

Although we did not opt to pursue 10 pointswe pushed much harder for it the next week.North Balwyn Combined had a tough year, andwe managed to restrict them to 112 but againcouldn’t finish off the tail quickly. Jake Papponslapped a 61-ball 79 in response, and MattPirovano scored 37 to ensure we passed thetotal quickly, and just one-wicket down, beforewe declared and put them back in. To theircredit, NBC acquitted themselves well and wecould only take 5 wickets. Sean was the staragain, with a career best 6/34 and seven forthe match.

We had sealed our place in finals, and werehoping to seal top spot in the last roundagainst Edinburgh. Their ground was unique inhow big and slow the outfield was, and they

played it to perfection to register 224. As theyhad done all year, Sean (3/34) and Will (4/52)took the lions share of wickets. We battledhard in response, but were always just behindwhere we needed to be and could only make200.

The loss saw us in a 2 v 3 Semi Final where wehosted AYC. To AYC’s credit, they took theirchances and got on top of us, batting first andposting 242 at Southern Reserve. After adisappointing start we fought back well with4/44 from Sean being the pick of the bowlers. Our batting order had done the job all year, and we started well before a middle ordercollapse effectively ended our chances. Weagain fought back with some late runs butcould only post 173, our lowest score in acompleted innings for the year.

Although the season ended in disappointment, there was some very encouraging signs for thefuture. We were never blown out of anycontest, and established a high quality baseline that should be our standard for the future.I would like to congratulate Luke and Sean ontheir awards and the years they had; Luke wasphenomenal with both bat and behind thestumps, and was a deserving winner of theMost Valuable Player award. At just 20, Lukehas a special future ahead of him, and has thepotential to lead this club to great success.

Sean is another who stood up when it countedthis season; he is an extremely difficult bowlerto face and an extremely each bowler tocaptain. He bowls long spells, and has highstandards for himself that are passed on toother players at the club.

While these two were the stand outs, we had anumber of great performers during the season. All of our top six made over 175 runs for the

first time that I can remember, Will Walton wasagain superb with 34 wickets, and our bowlingattack bowled well as a unit, sticking to ourplan and giving us a chance in every game weplayed.

I would like to thank the 16 players torepresent the 1st XI this season for their efforts. We maintained a high standard that the rest ofthe club followed, and have built a strongplatform for further success. As the 1s playersare aware, I often harp on about ‘SaintsCricket’ and in 2015/16 that meant tough anddisciplined cricket, high quality training, andcommitment to playing for one another. It wasa pleasure to be a part of this team, and I can’twait to do it all again next year.

As shown here, Will Walton puts it all onthe line every time he plays. It was this thatmade him an easy choice for the Captain’sChoice Award

Three-peats. Dynasties. Legends. These werethe buzz words floating around the SouthernReserve rooms back in March 2015 whenJames Watts hit the winning runs to win oursecond flag in as many years. Backing up the2nd XI’s efforts from the 2013/14 and 2014/15premiership-winning seasons was always goingto be a huge task. When the committeedecided to appoint me as captain I told themmy goals; I wanted to try and avoid relegationfrom B Grade, bridge the gap in cricketingability between the 1st and 2nd XI teams and ifpossible, blood some youngsters but only ifthey were ready and capable.

It was only my 3rd full season at the club, but inmy first 2 seasons I was lucky enough to be apart of the 2nd XI premierships, ably led byDamien D’Souza (2013/14) & Matt Pirovano(2014/15) and I wanted the other lads to tastepremiership success. In the back of my mindwas Damo’s voice saying “I bet you can’t win it

next year” and Matt’s voice saying “if you don’twin it next year don’t come back”. A pipedream of mine was to not only make finals butto win a 3rd flag in a row.

The lads had a solid pre-season and we werechomping at the bit to get into the season.Round 1 saw us up against Notting Hill-Brandon Park, the team we defeated in lastyear’s semi final. We went in with a very strongbowling outfit and although we had some goodperformances from “The Baron” Baden Wass(3/27 off 8) and Jason “Taco” D’Souza (2/14off 7) our batsmen didn’t fire and we gotcompletely outplayed to the tune of 77 runs –a smashing in a one dayer. It was a real realitycheck. Earlier in the day I had announced Tacoas my vice captain and his performance withthe ball set the scene for the rest of theseason, with him going from 2nd or 3rd changebowling option to opening our attack.

In round 2 we rallied to win a tough gameagainst AYC at Southern. We set a good total;they needed 35 runs off 36 balls with 4 wicketsin hand however we got wickets at the deathto give us an exciting 14 run win. Nick Hughes(50 off 51) missed round 1 but announced hisintentions for the year with a fully surk halfcentury. Brad Clement (26 off 26) showed hehad the natural hitting ability to make thetransition from F Grade to B Grade whilst 13year old Evan Stamos (37* off 41) repaid myfaith in his talent with a great knock, holdingour middle order together. Evan’s first 12 ballsgarnered 3 runs however his last 10 balls facedhe teed off for 15. In this game he showed histeam mates that he has the temperament toadjust his game depending on the situationand he was as capable as any of the other 10blokes playing in the 2nd XI. This held true forthe year – Evan was the only player to playevery game in the 2s this year.

Following a win, 2 losses in rounds 3 and 4 putus on the back foot for the rest of the year.Round 3 saw us set Heathmont 153 for victoryon Southern with “Robo-knees” Brad Clement(68 off 58) seeing them like basketballs. Webowled really well for 35 of the 40 overs withBaden Wass (1/6 off 8) again putting pressureon for a 1st XI spot and “The Bomb” SimonRutherford (2/7 off 8) showing the youngstershow it’s done. We had them 8/112 andneeding 41 runs with 2 wickets in hand withabout 5 overs left but coughed it up. It left usreeling.

Obviously not reeling enough - we then playedBurwood Uniting Canterbury in round 4 andwere chasing 206 for victory in a one dayer.Three of their top four batsman had severalyears’ experience playing Burt and/orMacgibbon Shield over the last 6-7 years. Theircaptain plundered us for 60 whilst theirnumber four hit 48, all in boundaries. To befair, the ground is the size of a postage stampand everyone got hit for runs. Our bestperformers with the ball being “The Rig”Martie Irwin (1/20 off 8) and Dean Lang (2/35off 8). Martie was a top performer for us lastyear however a few overseas trips and injuriescurtailed his season. We only got 3 games outof him for a total of 29.4 overs; we’re certainlylooking for him to hit pre-season running andget him playing at the very least in the 2s nextyear, but ideally higher. We quickly made lightof the chase with Nick Hughes (77 off 62)making a meal of the bowling and yet againBrad Clement (32 off 30) yet againcontributing. In my absence “The Prez”Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy (27 off 28) openedthe batting for the first time and after puttingon a 79-run partnership with Nickers for the 1st

wicket he showed he has a lot of talent tooffer. In fact, Prez has a knack of puttingtogether solid partnerships with his team

mates. He was involved with 6 of the best 7partnerships the 2nd XI could muster for theseason, all of them at least 70 runs or more. This is why batting at number 3 just fittedperfectly for him. Out of his 12 innings he onlyscored less than 15 three times, which showedhe could usually get a start and it wouldn’t belong before a big score come along for him.Long story short we were cruising at 4/164,needing 42 for victory off 15 overs with 6wickets in hand. We choked and lost by 9 runs. This loss was a bitter pill to swallow for quite afew of the guys.

After 4 rounds we were 1 win, 3 losses andfaced a huge uphill battle if we wanted to playfinals. I knew we needed to really shift how wewere going about things as I was getting sick ofcrying myself to sleep every night. My kidswere getting worried about me.

Cue the turnaround. The whole team juststarted to click. We had a more settled battingline-up and the bowlers knew their line/lengthto hit. Every game from here was approachedas a must-win game if we were to giveourselves a chance to play in March.

Round 5 saw us up against bottom-of-the-tableGlen Waverley Cougars. We held them to agettable score and passed them 5 down with7.5 overs to spare. Top performances fromMartie Irwin (1/12 off 8), Jason D’Souza (2/9off 7) and Johann “Yogi” Jesudhason (3/36 off8) whilst with the bat it was that man BradClement (62 off 40) hitting them to all parts ofthe ground, including a back-foot cover drivefor 6. Generally if he could survive 5-6 ballsthat would usually be enough time for him toget his eye in and then he can be devastatingto the opposition. In this instance he was 2 off6 balls progressing to 13 off 12, 23 off 18, 38off 24, 43 off 30, 58 off 36 and finally 62 off 40.

Now most who know Brad know that he’s notthe best technically however his hand-eyeskillset and timing when hitting a ball is rightup there with the best at the club. In fact, although Nick and Brad are polar oppositeswhen it comes to technique – Nick is moretraditional and Brad is more of a see-ball-hit-ball-with-heavy-bat kind of guy, both being asdestructive as the other. Here’s someinteresting stats: Nick scored 438 runs to Brad’s432, Nick hit 69 fours to Brad’s 66, Nick hit 5sixes to Brad’s 6, Nick’s strike rate is 98.4 runsper 100 balls whilst Brad’s is 97.1. Both batted13 times with Nick having seven scores above25 whilst Brad scored 25+ nine times. These 2guys really stepped up this year and both werea huge reason why we became such a strongbatting outfit.

In round 6 we were up against last year’spremiers Clifton Hill who, due to alreadyhaving a team in A Grade, were not promoteddespite winning B Grade last year. They weresitting mid-table however hadn’t been heavilyoutplayed by anyone so we knew this wasgoing to be a difficult challenge. They had adecent bowling outfit however we backedourselves to set them a total. This was our firsttwo dayer of the year and our goal was to batthe entire 72 overs. We did that and set them189 for victory with runs to Nick Hughes (37off 38), Brad Clement (31 off 49), Evan Stamos(24* off 92) playing his role again holdingtogether the middle order whilst in his first 2nd

XI game for the club Dave Santalucia (45 off34) coming in at number 9 made animpression. Davey was immense in his debutfor the 2s; he ended up bowling 17 overs, 8maidens, 0/36 however after 13 overs he had0/16 and his tight bowling along with SimonRutherford (1/21 off 11) put the pressure onthem early. Our bowlers were immense andafter 20 overs we had them 1/30 and they

were really struggling. The pressure got tothem and they were soon 7/69, we ended upcomfortably defeating them by 88 runs. Aaron“Pasty” May (3/12 off 8) and Big Mug DeanLang (3/16 off 8) tore them apart in the middlestages. Pasty played the first 9 games in the 2nd

XI and was probably a little inconsistent withhis line and length as he was still learning whatwas working for him and what wasn’t. Hefinished his season in the 3s and from allreports started to absolutely tear it up which isbrilliant, I’d love this guy to play higher as hisattitude is positive and he does whatever isasked of him. On reflection this was one of thebest games we played for the season in termsof doing everything right with bat, ball and inthe field.

Round 7 saw us up against the new bottom-of-the-table team Burwood. They had beenhanded a few beltings and I was hoping afterlast week’s performance we could really putthem to the sword. They won the toss andbatted and we had them 8/51 after 42 oversbefore their numbers 9 and 10 started toswing. Yet again another top performance withthe ball from Dave Santalucia (2/2 off 11including 10 maidens), Simon Rutherford(2/27 off 15) and a young, fresh-faced kidnamed Joe “Knuckles” Facey (3/12 off 8). Thiswas Joey’s 4th game in the 2nd XI from 7rounds, he floated between the two all year, possibly starved of opportunity in the 2s, veryunlucky not to bowl more overs but clickingover to the age of 18 will help with the numberof overs he’s allowed to bowl. They set us 123for victory and although we made it look hardwe passed them 7 down. With only 2 of ourtop 6 scoring over 10 we struggled to get outof the blocks. Another fellow who struggled abit with the ball but absolutely annihilated itwith the bat is “The Shaq” Heshan Somaratne(25 off 31), who was the sole glimmer of light

in our top order. Shaq played the first 2 roundsin the 2s but struggled with the ball whichmeant some time in the 3s beckoned. Theopportunity arose for him to bat in the top 4 inthe 3rd XI and he made it his own, compiling aheap of runs and winning the 3rd XI battingaward from only 7 innings. Look for a big pre-season from him and have him playing as a toporder batting all-rounder. We were steadiedhome in this one by the ever reliable Hayden“Dos” McCarthy (23* off 61) and 2nd XIdebutant Will “Spotty” Dalman (41 off 71).Spotty had played only a handful of gamesafter a long spell out of the game; he playedevery game in the 2nd XI after this one and hemade batting at 7 his own. He also bowls veryhandsome medium-paced pies; whenever Ithrew him the ball he got us a break-throughand his fielding in gully was solid. Can’t wait tosee what happens once he put a bit of a pre-season in.

Round 8 and the final game before Christmassaw us up against Monash, the team thatfinished top in C Grade last year and weregoing to be no pushovers. We batted smartand we batted all day, scores to Brad Clement(38 off 47), Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy (44 off105) and yet another 2nd XI and club debutantNick Duxson (35 off 53) set us in good stead. We set them 219 to win but unfortunately thefollowing week was called off due to excessiveheat and the match declared a draw. I felt thiscost us 6 points; 219 was a great total todefend and some teams above us on theladder were struggling against some lower-placed teams. We went into the break 4 wins 3losses 1 draw.

Round 9 pitted us in a one-dayer againstHeathmont and we were determined to getone back against them. Going into ChristmasHeathmont were top-of-the-table and the form

team. A win was crucial but we were missingyoung gun Brad Clement. They batted and setus an even 200 to win with Jason D’Souza(4/30 off 8) getting amongst the wickets butnot taking early wickets allowed them to teeoff and really put some runs on the board late. Our batsmen struggled with the chase withonly 3 of the 11 scoring above 20, thestandouts being Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy(67 off 56) and Chris “Poz” Pozzebon (30 off42). For Prez, this was the big score he haddeserved after nearly getting his maiden half-century in round 8 and his good form afterChristmas continued. We had missed Poz thisseason, his time had been taken up with othercommitments and he didn’t don the whitesuntil round 6. We ended up falling 18 runsshort and really needing to win every gamefrom here on in to play finals.

For the second time this season round 10 sawus playing away at 4th placed Burwood UnitingCanterbury on the postage stamp. I won thetoss and decided to bat and set a total. Webatted well with 5 of the 8 blokes who battedmaking 25+ scores. Nick “Ducko” Duxson (53off 62) continued his good form with hismaiden half-century for the club, PrasaanthKrishnamoorthy (44 off 54) yet again ranhimself out after looking a million bucks, BradClement (27 off 28) again put runs on theboard and I batted myself in the middle orderwhich seemed to work better for me as I finallymanaged to get some runs (27* off 46) whilstpartnering with young stud Will Dalman (30*off 24). We set them 206 to win – the sametotal they had set us in round 4. It was anabsolute cliff hanger and went right down tothe second last over. Taking wickets at regularintervals was a huge key and a great win by 16runs. Dean Lang (4/35 off 8) was the maindestroyer whilst they could not hit SimonRutherford (1/18 off) anywhere. I also threw

2nd XI REPORT

Will Dalman (2/15 off 3.2) the ball and hepopped up with 2 crucial wickets, getting usover the line.

The win in the previous round put confidenceback in the team and we approached theround 11 game against 3rd placed Notting Hill-Brandon Park game better prepared thanround 1. We won the toss and after allowingthem to get to 4/74 we absolutely rippedthrough them and rolled them for 111 inside43 overs. The 2 main destroyers were DaveSantalucia (4/19 off 8.2) and Dean Lang (4/34off 13). By the end of day 1 we were 4/124 orthereabouts and I had to consider when todeclare. I decided to get 200 of the boardbefore declaring, this allowed us 48 overs atthem in their 2nd innings. Everyone contributedto this total. We had 8 blokes scoring between10 and 25 whilst the standout was NickHughes (62 off 52) who was obviously teeingoff considering he was first to go out with thescore on 78. The second innings proveduneventful as NHBP dug in. I did, however, decide to roll the dice and give everyone abowl. The sole highlight from the 2nd inningswas giving our wicketkeeper Brad Clement(2/4 off 1) the final over and he managed toget 2 wickets with his rubbish pies.

The dominant performance in the previousgame set us up well for our round 12 clashwith 2nd placed Glen Waverley. We lost thetoss and were sent in and then the NickHughes (69 off 45) show began. He opened upwith lover of training/hater of gaming RussellJames (0 off 7) who was available as a weekone sub, interchanging with Nick Duxson. Thisknock was as devastating as Brad’s knock inround 5, Nickers started quietly with only 4 off10 balls but it soon changed as the boundariesflowed. He was soon 10 off 12, 19 off 18 andthen 19 off 24 before he just started to middle

everything. 19 off 24 turned into 35 off 30, 53off 36, 62 off 42 and finally 69 off 45 before anunfortunate mix-up saw him run out byPrasaanth Krishnamoorthy (19 off 28). Prezended up getting himself out stumped nextover whilst Brad Clement (11 off 9) couldn’tget firing. All of a sudden, our top 4 were in thesheds and we were 4/102 off only 15 overs. When you’re 4 down that early in the game 72overs seems like a lot of overs to bat. I thenpartnered up with Evan Stamos (55* off 166)for a 75 run partnership that lasted nearly 40overs. I got myself out for 49 off 124 but Evandid a brilliant job, sticking around until stumps, batting 57 of the 72 overs. Dean Lang (28 off21) and Will Dalman (43 off 34) cameoed atthe end to push our total from 5/179 when Iwent out to 6/284 at stumps. This was our bestbatting performance of the year and it couldn’thave come at a better time. We nearly made aright meal out of this one as one of theiropeners rode his luck all the way to a century.Probably the worst century I’ve ever seen butit’s still a century in the book. Our bowlerstoiled away but the luck was not with us and atthe main break they were 2/152 off 40 overs. We chipped away and kept positive, they thenfell regularly, 3/156, 4/180, 5/194, 6/195,7/204 but a 63 run stand for the 8th wicketnearly put it beyond our reach. They needed18 runs whilst we needed 3 wickets. Onewicket quite often can bring about another oneand they went from 8/267 to 9/269.Fortunately their number 11 was an absolutesponge who popped up a simple caught andbowled to me and they fell short on 281. Wecelebrated exactly how you can imagine and Ican assure you we deserved to do so. This wasone of the best games I’ve actually contributedto and to win and celebrate in front of approx.30 Glen Waverley supporters (including a fewof the senior teams who had already finishedtheir games) and were going crazy on the

sidelines was brilliant. We got up by 3 runs.Jason D’Souza (2/62 off 16) toiled away for theday, Will Dalman (1/10 off 2) got a break-through yet again and whilst quite a few othersbowled without a lot of luck, I had the luckwith me on the day and finished with mycareer-best 5/33 off 11.

During the week before round 13 we foundout Burwood Uniting Canterbury had fieldedan ineligible player a few games ago againstanother team and were docked points. Thismeant as long as we didn’t get beaten outrightby Clifton Hill we would be playing finals. Wewon the toss and sent them in, knowing itwould be harder to win outright if they battedfirst. They batted very smart and batted inpartnerships and put a very formidable 7/247on Southern Reserve. Jason D’Souza (3/58 off15) was the pick of the bowlers. We came backthe following week knowing we would have tobat all day and our top 4 did a brilliant job ofgetting us to 3/206 before Brad Clement (76off 61) holed out. Nick Hughes (31 off 36) andChris Pozzebon (44 off 75) opened for us whilstPrasaanth Krishnamoorthy (42 off 52) battedwell again coming in at 3. From there, wemade a real meal of it, losing 5/9. We passedthem with 1 wicket to spare.

We were up against Notting Hill-Brandon Parkaway at their ground in the semi-final, thesame team we beat in the previous year’ssemi-final before we went on to win the flag.Their 1st XI weren’t playing finals so theycleverly subbed in their best fielder to play theday in the field. They also had the choice of afew blokes who were fringe 1st XI players forthe year but could qualify to play 2s in finals. We knew this was going to be a tough task butwe also knew were we more than capable.Chris Pozzebon (44 off 91) again annoyedNHBP in the same fashion as the previous year,

sticking around for 30 overs before departing.Brad Clement (28 off 39) contributed again butthe rest of us couldn’t really get past making astart. Jason D’Souza (24 off 30) did a great jobcoming in at 9 and getting some quick runs.We set them 185 for victory on a ground thatreally needed a 220+ score. We got one oftheir dangerous bats out very early but wicketsthen became few and far between. At thebreak they were around 4/100-odd which wassimilar to where we were but after the breakwe just couldn’t get the wickets. Their number7 came out, rode his luck and swung hard andthis took the game away from us. They endedup passing us 6 down and that was that. Thebowlers found maidens hard to come by, thiswill be something we can look to improve nextyear so we can start building more pressure onthe opposition bats. Simon Rutherford (2/48off 17.3) bowled really well; he was only goingat 2 an over up until his last over which wentfor 3 fours in a row. I also bowled more than Iusually do and took 3/49 off 14.

Last of all, I’d like to thank the players whoplayed with me over the last year. We had atotal of 31 blokes play in the 2nd XI this yearand I’ve had a real blast playing and genuinelylooked forward to training and playing everyweek. I hope you all gained something fromplaying this year, whether it be animprovement in your skills, a renewed love ofthe game or even having created a bond withsome mates that will stick by you for years tocome. A huge thank you to Simon Hughes andCollin Facey for helping with drinks and tea fornearly every home game at Southern Reserve.Because this report isn’t long enough I’d justlike to mention some funny quirks from theyear:- Simon Rutherford arriving to every game witha pie and Big M, this has actually been going

on for years.

- Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy celebrating hisfirst catch for the club like India had won theWorld Cup. His face lit up so much it made youforget he had dropped his first 15 attempts.

- Nick Hughes coining new words and phrasesevery fortnight. Everything he says seems toappear on the internet within a day.

- Nick Hughes’ ability to raise himselfthroughout the year.

- Simon Hughes belief in free-parenting andallowing Nick to raise himself.

- Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy’s aggression whenbowling is something to be admired. He thinkshe’s going to get a wicket every ball and let’severyone know about it as well.

- Brad Clement coming out to bat and gettingsledged for how he defends and then pilfers 20off the bowlers next over.

- Evan Stamos’ cavalier response when asked ifhe wants sunscreen – “no mate, I’m right”.

- Will Dalman’s has a compulsion to have tosmile at every joke, even jokes that aren’tfunny. It’s a condition he’s seeing someoneabout. Go on, try it. Go up to him next seasonand ask him to not smile.

- Jason D’Souza’s really super nice nature andpleasant sledging of the opposition.

- Aaron May hahahahaha

- Prasaanth Krishnamoorthy’s switch-hit 4 inround 9 against Heathmont. Ridiculous.

- Dean Lang getting sledged by almost everyteam we played against. Even though he’sactually really nice, he is still really scary.

- Nick Duxson wearing a knitted woollenjumper in every game, regardless of theweather. He rolled up to the Glen Waverleygame – late – and fielded in 30+ degreeswearing a jumper. To be fair to him though, hewas not well and whiter than a tin ofTaubman’s Alpine Snow.

- Brad Clement’s contempt for bowlers. Thebetter quality they are, the less he respectsthem. The back foot cover drive for 6 againstGlen Waverley Cougars was a sight, can’tremember if it hit that car on the way past orjust bounced in front of it.

- Although we competed fiercely on the fieldthe general banter on game days was topnotch and made for an enjoyable season.

See you all next year!

Shaun ClementSt Pauls Cricket Club 3rd XI

The 3rd XI exceeded the expectations of manythis season. We lost our two dominant playersfrom 2014/15, and played in a deeper league. Most fair minded projections had us struggling.Instead, we strung together an unbeaten 12-game streak to finish clear on top of the table. We lost only two games - our first and our last, and both my narrow margins.

Tom Facey (14 wickets at 18) compiled astandout season with the ball and was ourdeserving MVP. T-Face bowled the openingover of most games and his consistency putour opponents under pressure to up their runrate. Often, frustratingly for T-Slam, thewickets fell at the other end (even morefrustratingly, his brothers often benefited).Tom’s religious dedication to training yieldedgreat rewards this season, and he continues tobe a terrific clubman and teammate. Hisbowling is elite for our grade, and his batting

won us two games. Well done, Tom.

Replacing Messrs B Clement and D Lang wasalways going to need a group effort. Theveterans of the team lifted to fill that gap andmore. Cag Tweedly (201 runs at 20.1)compiled his best season in years, whilst ScottArchibald (296 runs at 26.9) showed his class. Both of them also provided invaluable supportfor the juniors in the team and me. JamesCocks (140 runs at 15.6), though not of thesame experience, provided huge boosts theteam morale and set a great example for theteam. Aaron May (12 wickets at 13) finishedthe season as one of the best bowlers in theclub - in my opinion. His final two games, bothagainst the eventual premiers, were, quitefrankly, the best I’ve ever seen in a team I’veplayed in (38 overs, 7/81).

The benefits of having a strong club meant that2s cricketers often gained form in our team.Hesh Somaratne was immense with the bat(270 runs at 67.5), Chris Pozzebon likewise(191 runs at 47.8). Joe Facey (16 wickets at 8;113 runs at 37.7), Pasty and Justin McCarthy (8wickets at 17.8) were also too good for thegrade. They will all push for higher honoursnext season.

Ashray George and Daniel Hayes should alsocommit to a pre-season and attain higherhonours. Johann Jesudhason was really pivotalto our mid-season form and played his teamrole to aplomb; tying down an end often to thereward of the other bowler (12 wickets at 16),and selflessly sacrificing opportunities to bat.

Without a doubt, my favourite part ofcaptaincy is seeing the young starts comethrough the ranks. Pat Facey deliveredanother strong start to the season with the ball- leading my MVP card before being squeezed

out of the side. Owen Colley and Ben Edwardsalso showed their class with the ball in briefcameos. It is a credit to Sam Kelly that hecould force his way into a top of the table sideand keep some fantastic cricketers out of theline-up. Sam’s bowling came along in leaps andbounds this season, but his batting won us twogames and really makes me think he belongs inthe higher grades for his cover drives alone.

The running sheet belies the difficulty of manyof our victories this season. In round 2 wedefended 105 on a postcard-sized groundagainst the eventual premiers (Rav Maitanistarring with bat and ball). Then, in round 7Sam Kelly (37*) and Tom Facey (24*) put on 37runs for the last wicket to steal victory againstClifton Hill in Arch’s 250th game. My highlight, however, was our team effort to compile 8/287against Trinity Willison in round 12. Joe (73*)

and Tom Facey (26*) put on an unbeaten 89run stand in the final 16 overs - includingKnuckles hitting a six off the opening bowlerinto the carpark.

Everyone should be proud of the 3s season in2014/15. We are a very young team, developing rapidly. This season showed thatwe are able to fight through challenges, andthat we can hang with the best. We showedfantastic team spirit and unity. Cricket issupposed to be fun. 3s cricket is fun - and Ihope next year we repeat our approach to thegame, and get a premiership to go with it.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the3s this season, including our non-playingsupporters.

Heshan Somaratne goes big. As pictured here, he dominated the bowling in F-Grade and proved a classabove on the way to his first club Batting Award (270 runs @ 67.50).

Peter MaySt Pauls Cricket Club 4th XI

The 4s had an impressive year in 2015/16.From winning only 2 games in the previousyear to coming within 2 balls of thePremiership. A total of 40 players played in theteam, with a massive 70 team changes overthe 17 home & away games. For any otherclub, this would be a destabilizing factor, resulting in a lack of team spirit andmotivation, but not for St. Pauls. In fact theclub rose up to it; the team won 13 out of 17home & away games for the season.

The season started off in fine style with DaveSantalucia given the ball to open up against St.James. What followed was the openingbatsman’s middle stump cartwheeling out ofthe ground. Golden Duck, first ball of theseason - surely a fine to both batsman andbowler to their respective clubs.

A staple of the team was Dmitry Shevchenko,

playing every game of the season, standingbehind the stumps diving left & right to 4th-XI-level bowling and taking 14 catches. He alsoopened the batting, making a total of 372 runsat 28.62 with a top score of 76 and setting usup for victories with both sides to his game.

Vin Cameron won our batting award with atotal of 363 runs at an average of 45.38 from14 games, often coming in when the run rateneeded to accelerate during the middle part ofour 35 over games. His top score was 81.

Our bowling stocks were plentiful this yearwith the likes of Daniel Hayes, Amar Shah,Hamza (hypo) Khan, Ashray George, BenKennedy, Owen Colley, Rhys Incoll, Sam Kelly,Noah Turudia, and Pat Facey. All bar one didstints in the 3’s, underlining their ever-growingability.

Daniel Hayes & Amar Shah set up many a gamevictory with the bowling spells, if not gettingwickets themselves, partnership bowling, withwickets at the other end. Their finalscontribution was immense.

Greg Kennedy’s score against Richmond Unionof 41 n/o ( 6 x4’s) including the winning runs, off a pull shot through mid-wicket, were ajustifiable reward for his efforts, not only forthe 4’s, but the club. His bowling was also acrowd favourite, with figures of 2 overs, 0/7.

Zoe Pirovano’s bowling still baffles a lot ofbatsmen, with a highlight of seven overs, twomaidens, 1/9 against Melbourne Deaf. Much ofour junior talent owes a lot to her coaching.

Father & son team Simon & Noah Turudia werea joy to watch. A highlight was them openingthe batting together against Melbourne Deaf, and both even going out pulling a shot to

Other notable cameos for the season, many ofthem game winning efforts from higher teamswere: the game winning partnership of ChrisPozzebon (72*) & Craig Tweedly’s (33*) vsDoncaster, Heshan Somaratne’s 7 overs 2maidens 3/11 vs AYC, Amar Shah & JamesCocks’ batting & sledging and Russell James’both playing & fielding assistance, LesClement’s 28* vs Burwood, including being“bounced” by a 19yr old.

With the rise of juniors in both skill & courage

under fire, now believing in their ability to playagainst men two or three times their age, theclub in is a place that most other clubs can onlybe jealous of. Other captains spoken to duringthe past season mentioned their predicamentre: juniors.

Spots in teams will be hotly contested in thecoming years. To the 40 players this season forthe 4’s, thank you for your efforts, & wellplayed.

T20 REPORT – SEASON 2015/16

40Friendship in Sport

The club entered a Twenty20 side again thisseason, which has proven over the years as agreat platform for our younger players tolearn the game and get exposure to somehigher-grade clubs. Although we continuedour losing streak across all three games, there was plenty to take from the carnivalonce more.

We took on Ashwood in the first game atBatesford Reserve and posted a respectable5/151. It was captain Luke Pappon whostarred with a 59-ball 64, and he was wellsupported by James Watts at the other endwith 39 from 31. The pair put on 104 in just12 overs and gave us every chance to win thegame. We started promisingly with the ball, but ended up being passed in the 18th overafter Ashwood took advantage of the shorterboundaries. Chris Harding’s 2/35 were thepick of the figures, while Baden Wass wentfor just 14 off his 3 overs.

The club was exposed to turf cricket in thesecond game, and took on AshburtonWillows on a low and slow deck at

Ashburton Park. We scrapped hard but couldonly manage 82 with Matt Pirovano’s 18 thebest score we posted. We gave it a red-hotcrack in response, and Martie Irwin was at hisbest with 4/21 while Luke Pappon was in theunfamiliar position of opening bowler andtook 2/21. Chris Harding also took another 2,but we were passed 8-down in the 15th over.

Our draw got no easier as we took on theeventual ECA champions STC SouthCamberwell. Chris Harding made it sixwickets in three games, taking 2/40 whileLuke Pappon again took wickets with 2/25,but STC posted 167 in their overs. We gavethe chase our best; Luke backed up his spellwith 36 but it was Jake Pappon who smashed49 from 27 in a thrilling display. James Wattsswung the bat late for 25 off 15, but we fell28 short.

As skipper across all three games LukePappon was outstanding, and showed hisgrowth as a cricketer and a leader once more.Under his guidance next year we have nodoubt our luck will change in this format.

Jacob AttwoodSt Pauls Cricket Club Treasurer – 2015/16With two consecutive profits posted in the 2014and 2015 financial years, it was time for the clubto solidify their position and remove anyexisting debt. The committee worked tirelesslyon this, and were able to monetise theoperations of the club far more effectively thanthey had in the past, which is a credit to all ofthem. Sponsorship was higher, profit from BarSales and Functions were higher, and the fundsfrom “Other Fundraisers” such as barbeques atBunnings and Masters and the sale of cricketshoes through the club were extremelyeffective.

The club posted a profit of $4,839 in the 2016year, which was easily the highest in my fiveseasons as Treasurer and the club holds netassets of $6,911. With future plans involving

significant investment into new cricket nets, thenext two years will need to replicate this andthe committee will need to show the samefocus they did this season on securing the club’sfinances.

Bar SalesProfit from bar sales increased in 2016 to$3,009 from $1,880, thanks to an enormouseffort from bar manager Tom Facey. Tomworked tirelessly to ensure the bar was alwaysstocked and staffed, and was extremely diligentin the management of funds. This was in spite ofthere being a spate of thefts at the club, whichwould have seen the finances at the end of theyear position even stronger. Tom should becredited for this increase in Bar Sales.

Subscription Fees

Cricket has always been a cheap option as asport comparative to football or soccer, and wehave always had comparatively cheapSubscription Fees. After a review of these feesat the start of the financial year, we increasedSubs by $20 to $270 for full paying seniors, and$150 for juniors. Further to this, we were morediligent this season in collecting subs fromjuniors. I encourage the incoming treasurer tobe equally diligent in collecting subs fromjuniors as soon as possible.

Further to this, our social club “Sedgie’sSainters” saw social membership fees increaseto just over $1,000. There was minimal uptakeon this package from this season, but feedbackwas extremely positive from those membersand I expect these numbers to increase nextseason.

Functions

The committee’s approach to functions this yearwas fewer functions done right, and this wasparticularly evident in the execution of theMajor Raffle. The prize money was increased to$2,000, and the club generated nearly $5,000profit from this event alone, before factoring inbar sales. Other than this, the remainingfunctions ran largely as they did the previousyear, with minimal growth in profit. If there isone area I think the club has further room forimprovement, it is the social aspect. A dedicatedcommittee member next year should befocused on revenue generation through socialfunctions.

Sponsorship

As we have seen in previous years, sponsorship can fluctuate on an annual basis. We had somesignificant wins with sponsorship this season; we increased our sponsorship with Mulgrave CountryClub to $2,000 per year, and signed Graham Watt as a $1,000 sponsor. Player sponsorship should befurther encouraged within the group, where player subs can be covered by small businesses.

Other Fundraisers

As mentioned earlier, we held two barbeques this year to raise funds – one through Masters and onethrough Bunnings. Thanks to Monica McCarthy for co-ordinating and running these events, whichgenerated just under $2,000 for the club. Monica was deservedly recognised for her hard work withthe Best Clubperson award this year, and we appreciate the hard work of not only Monica but all thejunior parents over the years who have helped run these events.

Further to this, the club began a partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation whereby the clubcan receive tax deductible donations for specific projects (i.e: new cricket nets). The club should seethis as a real opportunity and market this to sponsors and members alike.

Uniform

Uniform continues to be an area where the club haemorrhages funds; the club offers free uniform tojunior players as part of their subscription fees, but the sale of uniform to seniors is poorly tracked. Anonline shop platform should be implemented next season where players can only buy clothes online. This way there will be a paper trail from uniform sales and the funds can be easily tracked.

Administrative Expenses

Administrative Expenses are broadly consistent year on year, with higher Umpiring expenses offsettinglower Fines/Penalties. Fines were limited to $240 for the year, which is driven by a significantimprovement in the senior captain’s and junior coach’s reporting of results on MyCricket.

Playing Expenses

Playing expenses have increased in line with Ground Rental payments in the 2016 season, whichincreased to $4,237. Further to this, Insurance expenses increased with two years of insurance beingpaid this season.

Jacob AttwoodSt Pauls Cricket Club Treasurer – 2015/16

Overall, our Balance Sheet has improvedsignificantly in line with our strong profit in the2016 financial year. For this first time in fiveyears, there are no payables at the end of thefinancial year and the cash balance is also thehighest it has been at the end of a season. BarTabs were reduced, but the committee stillspent significant amounts of time at the end ofthe season chasing these up.

It has been an incredibly strong year financially, and the committee deserves credit for workinghard to raise funds. This needs to continue to bea focus for us to take the next step at the club, and a part of this is the club instilling a culturethat funds spent and donated to the club areinvested back into its members. If I had threeareas for the club to focus on next season itwould be following:

Increased sponsorship: Sponsorship was high in2015/16, but there is room for improvement inthis area also. Establish strong relationships withsponsors ensures ongoing support, andsponsorship is a great source of funding to allowfor further projects such as the build of newnets.

Tight controls around sales: Controls aroundbar sales were very tight this season but it isimportant for this to continue and expand tosale of uniform.

Thinking outside the box: There areopportunities for growth outside of what we donow financially. It is important to continue toconsider these options going forward.

I want to thank the committee this season fortheir hard work, and specifically Baden Wass asPresident for taking on the role while the clubwas in debt and overseeing the transition to aprofitable club with a strong balance sheet. Ourhard work is far from over, and we mustcontinue to work hard as we establish ourselvesas a strong club in our area. Go Saints!
