LACOMBE EXPRESS Light Up The Night Festival Guide 2015 1
On behalf of the City of Lacombe, I am pleased to present the 2015 Light Up the Night Guide.
This publication contains the details on all the family-friendly festive fun events being held from November 25 – 29.
I believe this festival represents the best aspects of our fi ne community spirit. What better time is there to really come together and celebrate than during the Holiday Season? This is the one time during the year when smiles are a little brighter and laughs are a little louder. With that in mind, I encourage you and yours to take in as many of the festival events as possible.
It is hard for me to believe that fi ve years have already passed since Light Up the Night Festival fi rst began. It seems like such a short time ago that I walked in my fi rst Santa Claus Parade. I thought then, (and still do believe) that the atmosphere during the festival is magical!
We have come a long way since that time. You can still take in old community favorites like Moonlight Madness and the Christmas Farmer’s Market, but now people also have the option to catch the Flatiron Jazz Band belting out some Christmas music, or slip down the popular ice slide, and even grab a quick bite from the Scouts after taking in the Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade and the LMC Tree Lighting Ceremony.
I also encourage you to check out all new activities this year, including the Christmas Geo-cache, the festive Jingle Bell Run, and the Christmas Brunch at the fabulous Best Western Lacombe Inn and Suites. Drop in for a free Christmas-themed movie at Lacombe City Cinemas, and be sure to get your picture taken with
Jolly Old St. Nick at the Selfi e with Santa Station.
We would not be here without the help and support of our many sponsors and volunteers. To everyone who helped in organizing and hosting this amazing festival; it is your commitment to community that makes this event possible. I am humbled by your generosity of spirit, and bid you all a heartfelt thank you.
So, on behalf of Council and staff of the City of Lacombe, I wish you and your loved ones all the delights and joys of the Holiday Season!
Sincerely,
Greetings from the Mayor
Steve Christie, Mayor

What do 50,000 lights look like when you fl ip the switch? Come down to the LMC and fi nd out! Also check out the beautiful ice sculptures that recognize our fi ne tree lighting sponsors.
Every year, the LMC Lights Display seems to grow in size and popularity. It has quickly become a holiday destination that’s not to be missed! This year will not be any different. A greater variety in music will be provided for the shows, and there will also be periods where the display will be ‘static’ so people can also enjoy the full impact of the over 50,000
lights! For those of you that are not aware, the music that accompanies the shows can be tuned in on 88.1FM, so you can also enjoy the display from the comfort of your vehicle.
Of course, the amount of work that goes into making this display happen is signifi cant. It simply would not be possible without the help of our dedicated sponsors and community partners. So we invite you to check out the tree lighting ceremony; it is always something to behold. Then please come back as often as you like, as it is certain to brighten up your holiday. Ho! Ho! Hope you enjoy!

OOOO
That’s not a typo! Cranna Lake will be set aglow with a spectacular fi reworks display set against a wintery backdrop. The lake should be frozen by then, so we should be able to allow some skating and tobogganing – weather permitting, of course..
Always a festival favorite, this year we are doing things a little differently. As you may recall, the weather did not cooperate our last go-round. We eventually offered the fi reworks just after school was out for the kids and just prior to Christmas. Many people commented that this ended up being a great atmosphere.
Families were anxious to get out and celebrate with family and friends. The lake was fully frozen so people could skate and toboggan. So this time we are planning for a delay. The fi reworks will take place on December 21, 2015, with an eye to having everyone out to enjoy a fun-fi lled evening! We will have the fi re pits on hand to keep everyone toasty, and the Tim Horton’s will be onsite with their community truck providing hot chocolate and coffee for all. If you haven’t seen the fi reworks against the wintery backdrop, it is really something to behold! So dress up, stay warm, and join in the festive fun!

14 Light Up The Night Festival Guide 2015 LACOMBE EXPRESS
Greetings Everyone!I’m looking forward with great anticipation to my annual visit to Lacombe for the Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade. It’ll be great to get away from my busy workshop for a while to spread a little Christmas cheer. Also, for a small-ish city, you certainly pull out fantastic crowds! It always reminds me of a mini Macy’s Day parade. This year, I’ve decided to stick around for a few photos with you after the parade. I will also make a special visit to the new Best Western Lacombe Inn & Suites for a special Sunday brunch. And yes, I will let all of you sit down to eat fi rst; the reindeer are always reminding me that I have a pretty healthy appetite. Ho! Ho! Ho! When I visited your fair city last year, someone actually asked me what I wanted for Christmas! This does happens from time to time, and I honestly thought about it for a good bit. Technology always comes to mind, as we’ve had to become pretty computer-savvy at the North Pole. But in all honesty, I will go with my old favourite: Peace on Earth and good will to everyone. It might sound
a little old-fashioned, but it’s precisely why I got into this line of work to begin with!Speeding across the world at roughly 650 miles per second can sometimes be a dangerous job. It used to be a lot easier, before the coming of the Space Age and all these satellites! There I was, quietly going about my appointed rounds in 1957, when Sputnik blasted out of nowhere and nearly tossed me out of the sleigh! It gave the reindeers quite a fright! Nowadays, I’m always on the lookout. Thank goodness I have an excellent working relationship with the folks at NORAD. Did you know they track my progress across the planet every Christmas Eve?Sorry, I was rambling on a bit...ah yes... Peace on Earth and good will everyone. That’s why I make the extra trip to Lacombe every year. And with all of your smiling faces lining the streets, I can tell you feel the same way. I’ll see you all on November 26. Be sure to save me a seat at the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Till then, be good!
The Lacombe Express is very grateful for the opportunity to partner with the City of Lacombe to bring you this wonderful festival guide.
We hope that you will find the guide informative, useful and fun.
Please be sure to take advantage of the Moonlight Madness Draw Prize promotion that is included in the festival guide.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the participating businesses. Without their advertising support we would not be able to publish the Light Up The Night Guide.
We wish everyone a safe and happy Light Up The Night festival.
