Overview

Chalwyn Spark Arrestors provide peace ofmind from the risk of fire from the ignition offlammable materials caused by spark emissionfrom the exhausts of diesel engines. They area basic but key safety feature for both hazard-ous area and lower risk diesel engine applica-tions such as forestry or agriculture where astray spark may cause ignition of combustiblematerial. Virtually all legislation with regardto operating a diesel engine in a hazardousarea includes a mandatory requirement to fita properly tested and approved exhaust sparkarrestor.

Operating Principle

Chalwyn spark arrestors are the quenching typeas defined in BS EN 1834-1:2000 clause 5.10.2.In this cyclonic design the glowing particles emit-ted from a diesel engine exhaust are spun and

repeatedly impacted against internal spark arrestorsurfaces. This cools them and breaks them downbefore eventual safe discharge to atmosphere.

Approvals

Spark arrestor types SSL and SSE have been typetested and meet the spark arresting performancespecified for diesel engine exhaust spark arrestorsfor use in zone 1 and zone 2 hazardous areas asdefined by the ATEX Directive. Types SSL and SSEare marked:

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to fully complywith the requirements of the ATEX Directive theinstaller/user shall satisfy themselves that the

installed spark arrestor is suitable for its intendedpurpose (undertake a spark test if necessary) andshall be included in the temperature assessmentof the completed engine prior to commissioning, inaccordance with the following stanards appropriateto the particular application.

Selection

The limiting engine ratings shown in thetable for each spark arrestor type should notbe exceeded. Where a diesel engine exhaustsystem also includes other features with significant

flow restriction, eg flame traps, restrictive silencersetc, or the engine manufacturer specifies an unusu-ally low back pressure limit, or where specific noisereduction levels are specified, the installer/user

must ensure the spark arrestor meets all require-ments of the intended application. If in doubtplease check with your local Chalwyn Distributor.

Note that when selecting a clamp on pipearrangement, the tabulated data relates to theinternal bore of the spark arrestor pipe stubs.

Installation

Fit the spark arrestor into the diesel engine exhaustpipe at any convenient position. Guard as necessaryto avoid any hazard arising from contact with the hotsurface.

Ensure correct gas flow direction as indicated by thearrow on the spark arrestor.

Provide adequate support for the spark arrestor and asso-ciated exhaust pipe-work. Support brackets up to 360mm(14) diameter are available from Chalwyn. Use flexiblesections where required to avoid excessive stresses.IMPORTANT: Early mechanical failure will occur

if the spark arrestor is not supported and installedcorrectly. SSL and SSD ranges must always be sup-ported at both ends. SSE can be mounted verti-cally using only the inlet pipe clamp if required.

Use a proprietary exhaust gas sealant as necessary tomake certain all joints in the exhaust system are gastight.

Check that under the full range of operating condi-tions the spark arrestor surface temperature does notexceed any maximum specified for the application.

Maintenance

Daily: Examine the spark arrestor for any sign ofgas leakage, cracks or significant areas of damage, iedents of more than a few millimetres in depth.

Three monthly (or 1000 hours operation, which-ever is sooner): Remove spark arrestor. Tap with asoft mallet to loosen any internal deposits and shakeout. Also by shaking check for any loose internal baf-fles.

If any sparks are observed, the spark arrestoris not suitable for further use. Note: ensure adequateventilation if this check is carried out in an enclosedarea.

Note:The engine must not be put back into service untilany problems identified by the above checks are rectified.
