HISTORYOveracenturyago,thePaloAlto

Baylandssaltmarshesextendedinland,approximatelytothelocationoftheBayshoreFreeway.ThemarsheswereavaluableresourceprovidingNativeAmericansandearlycityresidentswithfish,shellfish,smallmammals,waterfowlandplantsforfood,medi-cine,andconstructionmaterials.

PaloAlto’sstewardshipoftheBaylandsbeganin1921withthepur-chaseof40acres.Inthe1930stheyachtharborclubhouse,asaltwaterswimmingpool(nowtheDuckPond),andthelagoonwereconstructed.

Today,theBaylandscovers1940acres—1600acresareprotectedintheBaylandsNaturePreserve.Thepreserveincludessomeofthelastremainingsaltmarsh/mudflathabitatsontheWestCoast.ItishometotheendangeredRidgewayRailandthe SaltMarshHarvestMouse.

UnlikeotherBaymarshes whichhaveplantsthatgrowindis- tinctzones,thePaloAltomarsheshaveamixedplantdistribution.Thisincludespickleweedandcordgrasshabitatsthatareinterspersed betweenmudflats.

BirdwatchingintheBaylands isexcellentyear-round.In wintertimeextremehightidesbringbirdwatchersfromaroundtheworld.Inthespringandfall,thisisaprimestopoverordestinationforbirds travelingonthePacificrouteoftheirmigratoryflyway.

The Baylands Nature Preserve, Pearson-Arastradero Preserve, and Foothills Park include almost 4,000 acres maintained and managed by the City of Palo Alto as open space for recreation and wildlife habitat preservation.
