Commodore’s Comments
Mary Jo and I just came off a 2 week boating vacation. 7 ports in 15 days and it
was unbelievably enjoyable! We boated with the Kilman’s and the Steinhaus’s.
The Wheatley’s came along with us and no, Bill didn’t get thrown off the boat at
Mile Marker 39. We ran into Gus and Sandy (Texas Gambler) from Harbor Lite
Yacht Club and we all traveled together for a few days. They are great people to
travel with and we met great people while in Michigan. I know that I have said this
before…there is no greater community than the boating community. My wish for
all of you is to take the adventure and travel anywhere with your boats. There is
satisfaction of navigating to an unknown port. There is beauty watching the lake as
you pass through the miles. Not to mention, there is a cocktail or two once you are
snuggled into your pier. Michigan welcomes boaters and is a beautiful place to
boat. I have several of the ports we stopped at on my “I am going back there” list.
Next time to spend a bit more time exploring the area. Our boat name is “Knot on
Plane” and is in reference to MJ’s and I aviation experience. I also found out if you
let two women on a shopping mission bring all of their treasures onboard the boat
has the potential of “Knot Getting on Plane”…
July was a pretty busy month around the Club. I want to thank everyone that helped
out and attended the Summer Picnic. It was a great success and I hope fun was had
by all. Our first car show seemed to work out well. Thanks to Paul Mozejewski
for putting this together. The Bar did incredibly well that day. The car show also
coincided with the annual battle between SSYC and SMYC, Fish On Fish Off fish-
ing contest. While it is not ideal to have two major events going on at the same
time, we seemed to pull it off. Vice Commodore Mike Gengler reported to me via
long distance texting that we had retained the traveling trophy. Great job to all of
the fisherman involved! It was good to see that coveted trophy when we got back.
Thanks to SSYC for your continued support of this event!
Finally, in case you haven’t heard our Open House Weekend is rapidly approach-
ing – August 26th, 27th, and 28th. Friday night starts it off with Steak Night – Barb
and Mickey Nowak always do a great job with fine food and music – there are
only 130 tickets available for this event. See your bartender to purchase. Saturday
starts off with a lunch (11:00am to 1:00pm) sponsored by our Juniors. The Pig
Roast is serving from 4:00pm to 6:00pm – Debbie and Kyle Brunk are returning
event masters for the day. There is something going on all afternoon and into the
evening. We have a great band coming in Reverend Raven and The Chain Smoking
Altar Boys! There are games, raffles, and just a whole bunch of fun. Sunday is the
Hangover Breakfast from 10:00am to 1:00pm – currently we don’t have a sponsor
yet. But I am confident we will have one soon. For the new members this is a great
way to get hours, Debbie Brunk will be available to lend a helping hand. So if you
are interested please contact Debbie, Kyle, Cheryl Rybka, or myself and we will
get you going in the right direction. To all of our members, this is the largest event
of the year and we need assistance for each day. Signup sheets are located in the
bar for needs of the weekend. Don’t be shy! Just jump in and help where you can.
See you at the Club,
Jon Haag

Fish-On/Fish-Off Recap
Congratulations to the entire South Milwaukee Yacht Club fishing team for a solid 683.2-367.3 victory in the Annual Fish-
On/Fish-Off contest vs. rival South Shore Yacht Club.
As has been the tradition for 3 of the last 4 years, mother nature sent inclement weather to meet the 24 boats that participated in the contest this year in the way of pea-soup fog providing visibility under 100 ft. most of the time on the water. The 15 SMYC
captains participating in this year’s event persevered to retain the club vs. club traveling trophy, 3 of 4 of the top 4 boats, 4 of 5
of the individual species awards and biggest fish caught in the contest. I can’t thank the captains enough for keeping the chatter
on the water going and keeping each other apprised of successes and failures. It was a team effort that got us the victory! Great work!
The top 10 captains from SMYC were Ryan Behling on No Name 160.7pts, Jim Buss on Fish On 152.4pts, Seth Yus t on
Keep’n It Reel 147pts, Bryan Gahan on Lost My Bearings 117.6pts, Greg Puetz on Ambernate 105.6pts, Tom Hoffa on Higgins 99.7pts, Rick Klamrowski on Klam’s Chowder 91.5pts, Mike Gengler on Knot Too Shabby 91.5pts, Ron Ilk on Skipper II
79.9pts, Paul Rozinski on Salmon Fever 50.6 pts.
Taking home individual awards were Keepn’ It Reel with biggest king at 20.5lbs, Knot Too Shabby with biggest laker at
16.5lbs, Ambernate with biggest Coho at 8.3lbs, Klam’s Chowder with biggest Brown at 19.4lbs and biggest fish overall was Keepn’ It Reel with another king, this one at 24.3lbs.
Again, this was a complete team effort and it really took our “SMYC Fishermen Village” to bring this one back home to
SMYC. While I say this was a complete team effort, there is one individual fisherman I would like to call out. Tom Ronke who had a winning cooler of fish was unable to get his cooler to SSYC in time to be weighed for the contest due to several issues
that were both out of his control and couldn’t be prepared for. While hugely disappointed in how the events panned out that day
Tom approached the situation with a level of professionalism and composure I know I wouldn’t have achieved if I was in his
place that day. For that I personally want to thank Tom for his contribution to the SMYC fishing team this year.
Great job SMYC Fishing Team! See all of you next year!
-Mike
