Greetings! Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. We are looking
forward to working with our students at South Charleston High School in ef-
forts to exemplify their individual talents. It is a great time to be a Black Ea-
gle as our students continue to excel academically and socially at our
school.
We ask that parents and students get involved and take ownership
and pride in what we do at South Charleston High School. There are multi-
ple clubs and extracurricular activities that both students and parents can
be actively involved with. Research has proven over and over again that in-
volved students excel academically and have a more fulfilling high school
experience. We will be sending home valuable information at the beginning
of the year concerning our activities, academics and policies that govern our
school. We look forward to having you as part of the Black Eagle Family.
Let’s continue to make South Charleston High School great.
You will be receiving information from our LSIC (Local School Im-
provement Council) president and our athletic boosters president. These
are two great ways to begin to get involved with our school. Your time is ap-
preciated and valued by all of us. We look forward to seeing you on the first
day and during school events. One of the first events for the year is LSIC
and Open House on August 13, 2015 starting at 6:00 PM. We hope to see
you there.
Lets make the 2015-2016 school year the best year ever. As always...It’s a
great day to be a Black Eagle!
Sincerely
Michael Arbogast, Principal

The Kanawha County School system is committed to maintaining a safe
and healthy learning environment for all children in our schools. Certain materi-
als known as “asbestos” which may pose a health problem have been identified
in our schools.
The Kanawha County Schools’ plan for asbestos control is on record with
the United States Environmental Protection Agency and with the West Virginia
Department of Education.
Kanawha County Schools, in keeping with our commitment to provide a
safe school environment is identifying all asbestos in our schools in compliance
with the Asbestos Emergency Response Act. This information has been placed
in the school's Asbestos Management Plan and may be reviewed at any time.
In recent years Kanawha County Schools has removed friable asbestos-
containing material from several schools. Some asbestos-containing material
will be rendered non-friable by the use of encapsulating materials or simple re-
pairs. The response action section of this plan addresses this type of correction
work. Efforts will be continued as needed to provide a safe environment for stu-
dents, staff and the public.

Important Military Information Section 9538 of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 allows for schools to release student in-
formation to military recruiters unless the family chooses to “opt-out” in writing. Parents who
wish to restrict the release of information must complete the form on the back page of this
newsletter and return to the school by the designated date so that the student’s record can be
tagged with the “opt-out” information.

tions may be removed from the bus
temporarily and in extreme cases

extended period of time.
Any damage to the bus caused by a
student will result in a suspension of

talk in a normal tone of voice to en-
sure safety for the bus driver and
others.
Bus schedules will be printed in the
local newspaper. Watch for your bus

If you arrive late to class, your teacher will mark you tardy. Students will be admit-
ted and counted tardy up to five minutes after the tardy bell. Teachers will contact
parents/guardians by one of the following: phone, email, or Engrade following the
fourth tardy. Upon the 6th tardy to class a discipline referral will be sent to the of-
fice and consequences will be administered according to the behavioral conse-
quence chart. Students reporting to class beyond 5 minutes late without a permit
shall be counted absent and subject to consequences for skipping. This policy ap-
plies to periods 2 through 8. Students who are more than 10 minutes late to peri-
od 1 must go to the office to sign in and get a permit before reporting to class.
Snowball:
A student who accumulates 10 or more unexcused classroom absences for any class period during
the first semester will not be permitted to attend Snowball.
PROM:
A student who accumulates 15 or more unexcused classroom absences for any class period through
the third nine weeks will not be permitted to attend Prom.
***Doctor excuses or parent notes for absences will only be accepted within 5 days of the absence.

Tardy Sweeps
TAR DY POL I CY
New Consequences Related to Unexcused Absences for Snowball & Prom
Data from previous school years reflect that tardy sweeps help to curb tardy prob-
lems to class, which in turn helps reduce discipline referrals. The administration
will continue to conduct tardy sweeps throughout the day. The sweeps will be an-
nounced and unannounced and there will be efforts to conduct them periodically
all day at each class change. The tardy sweeps will be more frequent at the begin-
ning of the year as students learn the pattern of getting to class on time. The con-
sequences for getting caught in a tardy sweep get progressively more severe as
the number of tardies begin to accumulate. Students should make an all out effort to get to school
and class on time and to be ready for instruction when class starts.
A new form for free or reduced meals must be completed every year. If your child
has been on free or reduced lunch in the previous school year, please complete
and return a new form. The forms for Free and Reduced Price School Meals Fami-
ly Application are now available at the school, however parents are encouraged to
get these forms online at wvschoolmeals.net — These forms will be offered to all
students, but in the event the parent/guardian does not receive the form, contact
the school for the forms or go online to wvschoolmeals.net. Completed applica-
tion forms are to be mailed to the Office of Child Nutrition at:

Parents who transport students to school must follow the estab-
lished traffic pattern that has been put in place by the SCHS Safety Com-
mittee. The goal is to keep traffic moving for vehicles and maintain safety
for foot traffic. Please follow the arrows and the directives of school per-
sonnel on duty to help eliminate jams and maintain a smooth flow of traf-
fic. A striped drop-off zone has been instituted to allow multiple cars to unload students at one time.
Students may exit vehicles if the car is in the drop-off zone. By following the rules, students will not
be late for school and vehicles can get off the hill in a timely fashion. Please review the bulleted list
below that outlines the driving pattern, procedures and precautions for bringing students to school in
the mornings.

Cooperative efforts between the City of South Charleston PD and
South Charleston High School helps to provide a Prevention Resource Of-
ficer for the 2015-2016 school year. Lt. Stan Miller will begin his 8th year
as the PRO at SCHS, providing educational information, walk-throughs and
safety counseling for staff and students.
Lt. Miller has been a resource for the administration and staff
throughout the instructional day by teaching classes in health, driver’s ed-
ucation and technology safety. Additionally he lends his expertise in con-
flict mediation to the administrative staff. Lt. Miller has proven to be a
positive presence before school, after school, and at school sponsored
events. We are proud and honored to have him aboard for the upcoming
school year.
The SCHS Athletic Boosters sole purpose is to enhance the experiences for student athletes
during their years at SCHS. Parents, teachers, coaches and community members are asked
to support this group by volunteering their time and expertise to help student athletes and
the boosters.
Volunteers are needed for a myriad of activities, from staffing the concession stands and
merchandise booths, fundraising, selling advertisements for the printed program, organizing
and implementing fundraising events, recruiting volunteers, and more. The goal is to have a
large, reliable cadre of volunteers who can contribute small amounts of time so the whole
organization is able to meet its objectives of:
►supporting all athletic programs at the school
►promoting excellence, pride and good sportsmanship as a means of ensuring a
more enriching experience for student athletes
►providing financial assistance to all athletic teams recognized by the school
administration
Please get involved with the SCHS Athletic Boosters. Meetings are the 2nd Monday of every
month in the high school library, beginning at 6:30p.m. Also, check us out on Facebook. For
