SURPASS supports LifeWorks, the Siemens
vision and strategy for the future of tele-
communications. SURPASS opens the doorto the world of Next Generation Networks
with its attractive applications and smooth
migration towards all-IP and optical net-
works. It provides the building blocks for
your network of the future:
s Next Generation Switching
Carrier-grade and customized Voice
over IP solutions are complemented
by a wide range of attractive con-
verged voice/data applications.
s Next Generation Optics
Flexible solutions for migrating your
transport network towards NGNwhile keeping track of OPEX.
s Next Generation Access
A complete range of flexible access
solutions offering any voice, data and
video service required for today and
tomorrow.
s Next Generation Network Management
Comprehensive management solu-
tions based on standards and open
interfaces, guaranteeing evolution
capability and the fastest possible
launch of new services.
The Next Generation Network presents a
persuasive value proposition to network
operators. Functionality is decoupled fromhardware, allowing the operator much
more flexibility in installing, configuring,
growing, and operating the various com-
ponents of the network. Its design affords
significant revenue and cost advantages.
On the revenue side, by centralizing appli-
cations and service control, you can intro-
duce new services faster. And new IP-en-
abled services deliver an enriched
experience to the end user as well as
greater profit potential to the operator
by converging the best attributes of voice,
data, and video communications in moreadaptive and intuitive sessions. Delivering
these capabilities over a single platform
and across a simplified network structure
eases cost pressures on operators who are
otherwise laden with separate networks
to scale and maintain.
As indicated in Figure 1, recent studies
confirm that reductions in operational
costs, the ability to offer new services,
new service bundles and scalability advan-
tages are key drivers of Next Generation
Network deployment plans by major net-work operators.
Widespread recognition of the need to mi-
grate to the Next Generation Network
does not, however, diminish the pressure
to do so in a financially sound manner. In-
deed, the economic slowdown in much of
the world is driving many operators to ex-
pand their early thinking on how best to
implement the Next Generation Network.
Many operators seek extension solutions,
in which TDM investment is capped and
the Next Generation Network is deployedto accommodate their ever-growing voice
networks. Other operators pursue replace-
ment solutions in which Next Generation
Network elements replace faulty or manu-
facturer-discontinued TDM switches. To-
day, we recognize that many of you are
considering overlay solutions in which in-
vestment in the Next Generation Network
is incremental to and independent of your
legacy systems.
Appreciating the Implications
Heightened interest in the overlay approachreflects two broad trends:
a) Market challenges are fostering a
change in investment priorities
Many operators are experiencing erosion
in their core voice business as a result of
economic contraction, wireless substitu-
tion, competition from new entrants and
premise-based solutions. Without voice
line growth as a driver, they are shifting
their investment priorities away from cap
and grow scenarios. Under constrained
budgets, replacement projects and net-work overhauls that will help operators
save future operating expenses are losing
favor to small-scale projects that address
more immediate concerns. Overlay solu-
tions offer an incremental, success-based
approach to building the Next Generation
Network. After the aggressive cost cutting
of recent years, operators are now focused
on solutions that will help them increase
top-line revenues.
2
Taking Stock of the Situation
-
7/15/2019 Siemens SURPASS NGN Overlay Solutions Brochure
3/22
With many operators having achieved
ommendable improvements in their bal-
nce sheets, the push toward qualitativegrowth is overtaking the need for quanti-
ative growth. This has set the tone for
evenue-, margin- and market-driven pur-
hasing behavior. Many network operators
re revising their view of service and fea-
ure requirements. They are becoming less
oncerned with replicating CLASS 5 fea-
ure sets and more interested in delivering
net gains in functionality. Multimedia ca-
pabilities will enhance their position in the
ommunications value chain. After up-
grading much of their network to support
wo-way digital communications, manyable operators in the race to triple play
are allocating investment toward voice
elephony.
b) At the same time, market opportuni-
ies for new services are becoming clearer
Successful trials and initial VoIP rollouts
re assuaging users concerns over VoIP
echnology and Quality of Service.
One-wire cost advantages of IP telephony
re driving more enterprises toward IP so-
utions above and beyond IP contact cen-
ers. A proliferation of native IP clients andbroadband access subscribers is rapidly ex-
panding the addressable market for con-
verged services and applications. An over-
ay approach helps the network operator
ccommodate demand for new services
without touching the CLASS 5 network.
A lower-cost service platform will help op-
erators achieve highly competitive pricing,
which will further stimulate demand.
Regulators are continuing down the path
of forming policies that encourage infra-structure investment that is tied to the de-
ployment of broadband-enabled services.
Our SURPASS NGN Overlay Solutions help
you capitalize on the flexibility presented
by an overlay approach. We believe this
flexibility will help you deploy new services
more quickly than the competition and
capture market share and deploy services
more cheaply, increase profits and also
deploy services where the competition
cannot and create new markets. These
advantages will help you migrate to NextGeneration Network very profitably.
SURPASS hiQ 8000 supports the LifeWorks
concept and offers next generation appli-
cations that enable you to play a major
role in this new world of communication.
Providing new IP-based services will help
you satisfy upcoming and evolving cus-
tomer demands, tap into new revenue
sources and lead the emerging market.
From our extensive work in modeling the
cost-benefit relationship associated
with our solutions, we have reached cer-tain conclusions. The revenue opportuni-
ties they will enable you to exploit over a
six to eight year period will help you real-
ize an internal rate of return (IRR) on your
investment in excess of 100%. Breakeven
occurs in less than three years. And offer-
ing new services over fewer network ele-
ments (a lower cost platform) assures that
youll achieve the margins you need to im-
prove your bottom line.

LifeWorks
Smart Communications Made Easy
LifeWorks is the Siemens ICN concept for the
elimination of fragmented user communica-
tion experiences and the removal of barriers
between all networks, whether private,
public, mobile or fixed. Services, applica-
tions and functionality will be available
throughout the different networks with-
out limiting performance or security.
Homogeneous operability simplifies using
services. To realize this, Siemens ICN uses
the SURPASS carrier solution and the HiPathenterprise solution, bringing these solutions
together. LifeWorks gives network operators
the possibility to offer new, innovative ser-
vices, allowing differentiation from competi-
tors and the exploitation of additional new
sources of income. Due to the enhanced
convenience and value which the operator
can offer, productivity is markedly increased
when communications throughout business
and private environments are integrated.

SURPASS Voice over Broadband
Deploy New Services Faster
and Cheaper
In the telecommunications market, cus-tomers show a growing demand for broad-
band Internet access. In order to handle
the emerging data traffic, carriers build
up or expand their IP networks. But why
should you use your network only for
simple data transport without seizing the
opportunity to additionally offer voice or
even voice-data converged services over
your broadband infrastructure?
SURPASS Voice over Broadband is the
Siemens carrier-class end-to-end solution
for cost-effective provisioning of voiceand next generation services to packet-
based subscriber lines or customer premis-
es equipment. It combines the power of
todays PSTN feature richness and reliability
with the higher bandwidth, flexibility and
economic savings of IP-based data net-
works.
Thrive on the New Generation of
Broadband Services
The trend towards broadband access (viaxDSL, Cable Modem, Ethernet, Wireless
Local Loop or Powerline) is already a market
fact. Broadband services will grow signifi-
cantly in the next few years, and you may
have invested heavily in your data infra-
structure without the revenue benefit you
are accustomed to receiving from voice
services. In order to succeed, you must re-
store profitability by more efficiently using
your installed infrastructure and offering
lucrative add-on services to broadband
subscribers, while at the same time reduc-
ing future investment costs. The telecom-munications markets of today are also
highly competitive, giving your customers
the opportunity to choose their provider
at will.
Since business customers have a high im-
pact on your revenues, it is essential to
keep them satisfied. But how can you ad-
dress these customers?
SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) and SME
(Small and Medium Enterprise) customers
often require broadband data in combina-tion with several voice lines, and you have
the solution for them SURPASS Voice over
Broadband.
The SURPASS Voice over Broadband solution
provides you with the Next Generation Net-
work way of transporting voice and dataover any broadband access media such as
xDSL, Hybrid Fiber-Coax, MetroEthernet,
Wireless Local Loop, WiFi or Powerline.
In essence, you must add three key ele-
ments to the core of your network and
place IP clients in your customers premises.
The core elements are the SURPASS hiQ
8000 Softswitch (central intelligence),
SURPASS hiG 1100/1200 Media Gateway
(interface with the TDM network) and Re-
source Server (IP-based announcements
and interactive dialogues in different lan-guages). Possible IP clients are CPG (Cus-
tomer Premises Gateway), IAD (Integrated
Access Devices), IP phone, or a softphone.
Since SURPASS hiQ 8000 is compliant with
IETF RFCs and ITU recommendations, IP
clients can support any one of the follow-
ing protocols: SIP, H.323 or MGCP/H.248.
This provides you a broad range of options
for choosing the best equipment for your
network.
The SURPASS Voice over Broadband solu-
tion supports all existing TDM voice fea-tures, such as call indication, call restriction
and call forwarding and regulatory features.

Our Voice over Broadband solution willhelp you achieve a competitive advan-
age in the residential and small business
ectors of your market. You will be posi-
ioned to offer new voice and data serv-
ces at highly competitive prices, while
achieving very attractive margins. And
you will fortify your position in the bat-
le for broadband access market share.
Among incumbent local operators,
ome loss of traditional POTS revenue
s likely to occur with the introduction
of VoIP services. However, reduced sub-
criber churn, revenues from new cus-
omers, more revenue from existing
ustomers, additional broadband access
subscriptions, and greater profit poten-tial from new features collectively out-
weigh the risks associated with canni-
balization. Operators launching
VoIP-based services in new regions will
benefit immediately by saving on aver-
age some 50% to 60% in initial outlay
for network equipment, depending on
the scale and scope of their commercial
rollouts.
The centralized service platform and
streamlined architecture of our Voice
over Broadband solution results in a
network that is easier and cheaper to
operate, maintain, and grow.
Your network grows in step with de-mand in your markets. The risk of low
service adoption is far less than with
traditional network solutions, which
cannot cost-effectively address markets
with variations in service demand.
This allows you to capture market share,
deploy services less expensively, in-
crease profits, deploy services where
others cannot, and create new markets.

penses may be recovered faster becauseof the flexibility afforded by the Business
Connection solution. The risk of low
service adoption is far less than with
traditional network solutions, which
cannot cost-effectively address markets
with variations in service demand.
By serving more subscribers (new or
existing) over fewer network elements,
you will enhance your Return on Assets
(ROA). You will also gain greater pricing
flexibility. Having the ability to price
and package your services more com-
petitively will help you attract and re-
tain your subscribers without sacrificingattractive margins.
Improved functionality combines with
more intuitive services and greater con-
trol at lower cost to keep subscribers
satisfied. SURPASS Business Connection
offers you a more profitable business
model for enhancing your position in
the communications service delivery
value chain. With Business Connection,

SURPASS NextGen Applications
Searching for a New Key to Success
With LifeWorks, the communication of the
future starts today. Innovative applications
can be delivered over any network and to
any communication device in a user-friendly
and efficient way. LifeWorks leverages the
potential of Next Generation Networks for
network operators, companies and users.
Market forecasts confirm that the percent-
age of revenue generated by basic services
will decline due to market saturation, in-
creased competition and the resulting
price erosion as is to be expected in
deregulated markets. Although such basic
services will remain important and are, in
fact, a key requirement in any network, they alone will not suffice to ensure suc-
cess. The prospects for communication
service providers will in the future be
based on value-added applications. But
who will supply the intelligent, unified
multimedia applications you will need to
reap the full benefits? SURPASS is a highly
flexible carrier-grade solution based on
worldwide accepted standards that provides
next generation applications to give you
tomorrows services today. Open application
interfaces give you the power to put all
your ideas into effect from voice overdata right through to video communication
and web-based self-administration. With
SURPASS NextGen Applications you will
be able to provide highly innovative appli-
cations to your customers in the shortestpossible time in order to differentiate your
business from competitors, attract and re-
tain customers and increase your revenues.
The SURPASS Softswitch forms the heart of
the SURPASS NextGen Applications. Install
application software written by partners in
the IT and telecommunications applications
community on top of the SURPASS Soft-
switch and connect application servers
from partners via open SIP interfaces.
Siemens provides added value by profes-
sionally combining the most advanced
applications with a solid infrastructure tosatisfy carrier needs.
Tapping into World-Class Potential
The we SURPASS partner program intelli-
gently combines Siemens competence in
voice-data convergence with the innova-
tive potential of World-Class players in the
application business. The large variety of
our we SURPASS partners with their re-
spective off-the-shelf and customized ap-
plications puts us in the unique position
of being able to act as your single point of
contact for practically all end-user applica-tion ideas. Our contribution to these part-
nerships is the turnkey implementation of
the best Next Generation Network infra-
structure for fixed-line carriers, with core
components such as the subscriber data-base, media servers, conference units,
charging, security, and much more. These
core components form the basis for a
number of applications. The following lists
some of the applications already available:
Unified Messaging
With Unified Messaging you will enable
your customers to retrieve messages using
any type of device such as telephones,
PCs, web devices, PDAs, etc. Unified mes-
saging harmonizes all forms of messages
including voice mail, e-mail, fax, SMS andMMS.
Web Conferencing
Web Conferencing will allow your cus-
tomers to set up conferences conveniently
via an easy-to-use web interface. During
the conference call, a huge number of fea-
tures are available to the conference con-
troller who sets up the conference, and
also for all attendees (presence status of
the attendees, number of attendees, mute
other conferees, shut down the conference
and many more).

Video Telephony/Video Conferencing
With Web Conferencing you will open a
new world of communication to your cus-omers. Your customers will be captivated
by its ease of use, and a PC or a video tele-
phone is not implicitly needed since a tele-
vision set can be used as the primary
medium to initiate or receive calls.
Presence
Presence Service offers your customers
he possibility to see the status of all con-
act partners at a glance, e.g. online, busy,
eady for a voice or video call, gaming or
even text-based location information such
s I am in meeting room 4. The customerhimself can configure his own status and
mood, advising this to his friends on a de-
ined group basis. By introducing SURPASS
NextGen Applications you put yourself a
tep ahead of your competitors. This allows
you to attract and retain customers and
peed up time-to-market of new applica-
ions.
The full power of the we SURPASS partner
program, with all applications from personal
o corporate-wide, developed within a
homogeneous framework, is at your finger-ips.
Now you can mix, match and enhance ap-
plications to fit all your customers needs
from voice over data to video, secure inthe knowledge that standardization will
let you exploit your ideas in the most eco-
nomic fashion possible.

Developing applications for the PSTNhas historically been a slow, expensive
process. Services have to be implement-
ed either in the circuit switch or in sepa-
ate processors serving every local ex-
hange where the services are offered.
Network operators must depend on
heir equipment vendors for enhance-
ments, and changes can take up to sev-
eral years to implement.
n contrast, our SURPASS NextGen Ap-
plications solution enables you to im-
plement features and applications on
nexpensive, standard hardware plat-
forms using commercially availabletools creating services that would be
difficult or impossible to produce when
voice and data travel through separate
networks. You can exploit the advan-
tages of our architecture to achieve a
differentiated service mix, delivering
greater functionality to your subscribers
in weeks, rather than months or years.
Your investment quickly pays for itself
with:
s New revenue streams from new or
existing subscribers
sIncreased take rates of current broad-band access services from residential
and small business accounts
s Reduced churn resulting from sub-
scribers who, in the absence of your
offering, may have abandoned you
for an alternative.
And keep in mind that your long-term
profit potential is increased, with the
open protocol interfaces of our solution
unlocking opportunities presented by
a wide range of applications developed
by third parties.
