Grade 7 Performance TaskThis will be done in groups of four students. You will design and build your own structure. For the purpose of this task, you will be building a bridge. You will only be able to use approved materials, including, paper, spaghetti noodles, popsicle sticks, glue, string, paper clips, and tape. Together, we will agree upon one force to test each bridge (eg. fan, weights, etc.). As a group, you will develop and demonstrate ways to test potential forces like wind earthquakes etc. to show the class the strength of your structure. Accompanying your bridge will be a one page report describing the elements you used and what are you use them. Please see the rubric below for more information.

Expectations
Drawing Identifies the main components
Main Components are labelled and drawing is clear
Uses a neatly scale drawing and labelling for most components
Demonstrates understanding of scale drawing, labelled correctly and neatly.
Model
Structure appears careless or haphazard. Many details need refinement
Only does 1 of the following: uses proper materials or over 2 feet
Uses proper materials and over 2 feet.
Uses proper materials, over 2 feet, and structure is neat and attractive
Structural TestsFatal flaws in function with complete failure under typical stresses.
Structure functions pretty well, but deteriorates under typical stresses.
Structure functions well, holding up under typical stresses.
Structure functions extraordinarily well, holding up under atypical stresses
Report
Explains what elements were used in structure. Little detail about the planning, construction, and testing process.
Describe why elements were used. Details about planning, construction, testing, modifications, and reasons for modifications.
Assess what structural elements you are using and why. Detailed description of structural tests.
Detailed report about what structural elements were used and the tests connect to the environment and structures around the world.
Where should you begin?9:30 – 10:20 and 1:00 – 2:20
Review the expectations outlined above with your group members. Take a look at the different kinds of bridges that exist Investigate the strength of various kinds of bridges – check out Decide as a group what kind of bridge you will attempt to build Begin your preliminary sketches – check the rubric! Start making a list of the materials you will need to begin building tomorrow.
