the Poor in their Mission. Your generosity allows you to
walk shoulder to shoulder with them, co-creating a better
tomorrow for our elderly poor. Your prayers and support are

Liturgy and Life by Tim McManus, Pastoral Associate of Worship
Summer travel adventures usually lead us to those little gift
shops found in some restaurants along the interstate. The
shops have many gifts but it is inevitable that one finds the
cutesy plaques or coffee cups engraved with positive sayings
like “Welcome” or “Bless This House” and so on. And of
course the favorite of many, “It’s Hard to Be Humble When
You Are as Great as I Am.”
It is doubtful a humble person would buy such an article for
themselves or anyone else. And if received as a gag gift they
would graciously say thank you and then hide it after the
giver leaves. A humble person would feel way too
uncomfortable to display that saying.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is a guest at a dinner party at the
home of an important Pharisee. He was, no doubt, a well
respected and celebrated figure, as apparently were some of
the other guests. Evidently, Jesus observed that it was hard
for these folks to be humble for they had no problem
showing their greatness by where they chose to sit at the
table. He told them a parable about choosing your place at
dinner and the resulting consequences of either humiliation
or exaltation, depending upon how you played it. He
summed up the parable this way:
“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the
one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 14:11)
Practicing humility is a virtue taught us by the Master. And
what better place to practice humility than at Mass? We
bow, we stand, we sit, and we kneel. We are attentive to the
Word of God and to the Eucharistic Prayer. We participate at
Mass with gestures and songs, all the while giving glory and
honor to the One who gives us life. And returning to our pew
after receiving Holy Communion, we give thanks for His
mercy and await His Dismissal in the person of the priest to
“Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.”
It is hard to be humble, especially when we think we are
great in the eyes of others. We can easily fall in the trap of
being a legend in our own mind. Humility though, like Faith,
must be practiced. And the best place to practice is Mass.

WORSHIP
Diocesan Red Mass Monday, October 7 | 5:30 PM
All attorneys and their spouses are in-
vited to a Mass with Bishop Doherty,
followed by dinner and a presentation
by U.S. District Judge and St. Al-
phonsus parishioner, James Patrick
Hanlon.
The Red Mass is a tradition in the Catholic Church which
dates back to the 13th century. The first Red Mass is be-
lieved to have been celebrated in the Cathedral of Paris in
1245, and thereafter the tradition spread throughout Europe.
The word “red” was originally used to describe the Mass in
1310, because the justices of the English Supreme Court
wore scarlet robes. Over time the “Red” Mass came to have
a deeper theological meaning, with red symbolizing the
“tongues of fire” that descended upon the Apostles at Pente-
cost bestowing the gifts of the Spirit.
First Friday Mass You are invited to attend 5 pm Mass on Friday, September 6
at the Women's Care Center Chapel: 4901 W. 86th St..
