“Isn’t all of this exciting?” I thought as I drove my way the short few miles from my home to The Grange Cricket Club. My very first match as a qualified ECB Umpire. Only a matter of a few days earlier, I had been told by my tutor John Jameson that I had passed with 92% questions answered correctly. Not bad I thought, although some had higher marks than me (didn’t we Mr Neil ‘100%’ Jarvie). I made sure I was there with over an hour to go before the match started, in fact, I could have walked from home and still had plenty of time to spare. There I stood, proudly wearing my umpires shirt, to be greeted by.......three young children wondering who the hell I was! I was looking somewhat bemused until I was approached by the home team captain, who ushered me to the umpires room (I know, I’ve even got my own toilet!) and I got myself settled in. A quick walk around the outfield told me that this was a nice, even sort of pitch, well suited to a game of cricket. I could see the teams arriving, and to be honest with you, I was becoming a little nervous. I’ve been involved in cricket for over 30 years, playing at all sorts of levels (to be honest, most of them quite a minor level). The past few years had been spent with my son, who plays cricket at a lot higher level than I ever did, although he will have to go some way to emulate my Uncle Pujhan who played state cricket in India! The game soon started, and it was at this time that I realised just how hard umpiring was. I know this may sound a little strange, but counting to six becomes a very difficult and trying thing to manage, and I found myself struggling to keep up! I was also dreading my first lbw shout, as nothing in the classroom taught me about the intensity of the few brief moments I had to make the decision. Fortunately, I was able to remain calm, and found that most of my decisions were taken well within the spirit of the game of cricket, which is what it was all about I suppose!?!
By the end of the match, the away team triumphed in what was a very good opening match, and I walked off the pitch, aching from my feet upwards, but proud and relieved that the training and support I had re-ceived helped me to cope and remain involved within the game I love, with people who hopefully share the same feelings as I do. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season! By Jas Madahar
