COMPETENCY GOAL 1: The learner will design and conduct investigations to demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry.

1.03 Apply safety procedures in the laboratory and in field studies:

• Recognize potential hazards.

• Manipulate materials and equipment.

• Conduct appropriate procedures.

TLW demonstrate knowledge of lab safety rules and procedures.

TLW identify potential hazards and implement appropriate safety procedures when conducting scientific investigations.

Time: 3-5 days

o Science Safety Alice Presentation o Read and discuss Safety Contract o Assign getting Safety Contract signed for homework. Stress that no one will be allow to

participate in any lab without a Safety Contract signed by both student and parent. o Lab Equipment Identification Activity o Explain Interactive Notebook o Sponge Bob Science Safety Rules Challenge o Have students randomly select safety rules to create Safety Posters. This will be done in

learning teams of 3-4 students. o Safety Posters Presentations o Safety Rules Charades (if time permits) o Science Safety SMART Board Presentation o Lab Safety Handout Have students work with partners to complete this handout o Identify Laboratory Devices o Assessment using SMART Response System or online test if computer lab is available
