The Oakville real estate com-munity has lost “one of the best.”
A veteran of the business,Clare MacLean died Thursdayafternoon after suffering a heartattack two days earlier.
He was 73. Funeral services will be held
Monday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at TheHarvest Bible Chapel, 1215Lakeshore Rd. W.
“Clare was loved by everyone,”said Bill Miller, owner of Century21 Miller, where MacLean workedalong with his daughter, HeatherHisey. The pair were known as‘Oakville’s dynamic dad anddaughter team.’
“He’ll be greatly missed in ourorganization, and he’ll be greatlymissed by the entire real estatecommunity,” Miller said.
MacLean leaves behind hiswife, June, daughter, Heather, son,Paul, and three grandchildren,Robbie, Leslie and Stephanie.
“My father was more than afather to me. He was my businesspartner, my best friend, my confi-dante,” Heather said throughtears yesterday. “He was a manthat was full of integrity, and hehad a very strong faith.”
Heather said she’ll bestremember her dad for his unwa-vering faith in God, “his buildingblock to life.”
“He was an incredible sup-port. He was the best dad any-body could have, and he justtouched so many people’s lives.He was a special man, and he wasloved by many.”
Heather said more than 100people dropped by the OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital tosee her father before he took hislast breath Thursday at 5:35 p.m.
MacLean, who grew up inMarkdale, moved to Oakville afterbeing recruited by a Senior-Abaseball team in town.
MacLean was a devoted hus-band to his wife June. The couplewas married for more than 40years.
“I’ll never forget how muchlove he showed my mom,” saidHeather. “He called her his ‘girl-friend.’ He absolutely adored mymother, and vice versa.”
In Oakville, MacLean estab-lished his most successful realestate firm, Bayley-MacLean RealEstate. Most recently, for a cumu-lative period of 16 years, MacLeanworked at Century 21 Miller.
Known around the office as‘Mac,’ he was a mentor to many,including sales associate DonGoodale. In fact, Goodale would-n’t be in real estate today if itweren’t for MacLean.
He met MacLean while sellingcars in Oakville, and was convincedto join the world of real estate.
“He was convinced I would dowell,” said Goodale. “When Istarted, he was my mentor. Istuck like glue to Clare for sixmonths. Everywhere he went, Iwent with him. I learned somuch from Clare.”
While Goodale has now beenwith the company for more than adecade, the learning never stopped.
“I just learned somethingabout a month ago from Clare,”said Goodale, about plots of landsouth of Fourth Line. “He wasalways saying, Don, I can
remember this, or I can remem-ber that, and telling me things.God, I’m going to miss that.”
The most important thingGoodale learned from MacLeanin the early going as a real estateagent was about relationships.
“The biggest thing he taughtme was how important it was toestablish a good relationshipwith your fellow realtors. Therespect, the courtesy. He’s one ofthe last of a style of real estateagent that doesn’t exist any-more,” Goodale said.
“He was a very caring person.It showed with his clients. Itshowed with his fellow realtors.He was the most generous, cour-teous and caring individual I’veever met.”
Just as Goodale will remem-ber MacLean as a mentor, so toowill Miller. He first broke into thebusiness about 40 years ago atBayley-MacLean Real Estate.
“It was one of the most suc-cessful businesses in real estateever,” said Miller.
“I learned just about every-thing I needed to know abouthow to treat people, and how toexplain fairness to people.
“That’s where I really pickedup the traits that I needed tohave to be successful in realestate, and I learned them fromClare MacLean.”
Miller said when it came to fair-ness, MacLean couldn’t be beat.
“There wasn’t anyone morefair and ethical in working withothers than him. He treatedeveryone equally, and he was justso giving. There’s been manytimes when I needed a little helpmyself, needed some mentoring.Where does the broker go? Well,I go to another broker, and he’salways been there for me.
“I’ll never forget him.“Life does have to go on, and
we’ll continue, but we’ll neverforget Clare,” added Miller. “He’sone of the best.”
