Outlook on System Evolution
n ORBCOMM system is now managed and controlled by a new companyORBCOMM LLC. Its shareholders have prepared a new businessconcept for the operation and the marketing of the system.
n In order to maintain the system performance in the future, the newbusiness plan includes the design and implementation of new generationsatellites and an extension of the ground segment.
n The engineering efforts for the design and the implementation of newsatellites have started. Current plans are to launch the new generationsatellites beginning in 2005.
n Additional ground segment elements will be established in the future, toincrease system performance and coverage. At the time being it isplanned to construct additional GESs in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia,including Russia.

Conclusions
n The ORBCOMM System is a switched, two-way data communicationsystem, which has the following key features:
u global coverage,
u near real-time communication for main market areas, and store-and-forward servicefor remote regions,
u hand-held subscriber terminals with simple whip antenna,u global interconnectivity to the e-mail networks and internet.
n The following applications are addressed by many different services:u monitoring and controlling of fixed assets at remote sites,u tracking of mobile assets and vehicles, and
u messaging and paging-like services.
n Currently, there are 30 operational micro-satellites (43kg) in low Earthorbit, which are accomplished by 12 Gateway Earth Stations (GES)globally distributed.
n In the future, ORBCOMM plans to upgrade the system by launching next-generation satellites and extending the ground segment with further GESs.
